Thanks everyone for chiming in! It's really interesting to read all your opinions, it's all over the place with this one. I can understand the school skirt argument, but because we don't have school uniforms here at all I'm not that bothered. I've only seen plaid school uniform skirts in movies from time to time.

@ NancyLee, thanks so much for all that information! What a great perspective, I hadn't thought about it in that way at all. I was a bit confused about the count, but already suspected you meant the other one. I pinned it like that and took pictures again, also with the shirt untucked.

What do you all think about this new version? I think I like it.

ETA
What about that black line at the bottom? Would it be better if it were a bit shorter and it wouldn't be visible? Or would then the blue be too far down again?

Sorry, make that above the fourth blue stripe, not the third. I can sew, but apparently not count. :)

That would take the hem to about the one shown in #5/6. Version #7/8, although that length would normally be my preference, again puts that dominant stripe too near the bottom of your skirt, to my eye.

Oh, how I love a tartan fabric! Must be my anglo-saxon heritage, hee. At any rate, being a long-time sewist I've worked with and worn my fair share of it.

So, I think I know why saramir and kellygirl are liking the side view in #4. Let me get technical. It's because this view shows none of the most prominent horizontal stripe - the lightest one - close to the hem. See how there are three dominant lighter stripes running horizontally? Light colours come forward or stand out while darker ones recede. That's why we say darker colours are more slimming.

The cut of this skirt is already at least A-line. With your dark top tucked in this is making you look even more pear-shaped to my eye. (I agree with lyn 67 for sure on that - you'll get more slimming effect if your dark top just covers that first dominant stripe that falls right at your hips.) So IMHO I would hem your skirt above that third dominant blue stripe. Actually, because the black stripe just above it seems to be secondary I'd hem it just at the bottom of the burgundy background colour, not because of where it actually falls on you, but because that's how you'll get more of the background colour giving you a leaner look. (This may be enough of a change w/o taking it in at the sides as saramir suggests.) See how in #3 there's a bit of the blue peeking out at the bottom? That's why the side view looks better - none showing there.

It looks like the skirt has been well cut to hang straight ,so if you just follow the stripe around the bottom you shouldn't have any problem with uneven hem line. And by using the widest burgundy stripe at the bottom you can eliminate any potential problem of having to make minor adjustment in length to keep it even as you go around. Although, seeing only peeks of the back from the side views, it's hard to say.

Oh, tartan, how beautiful but tricky you are!

I'm with Aida. The shorter lengths are more flattering, but the longer have a fun 70s feel. I wouldn't wear a plaid skirt, let alone a long one (not mini) at all. That's not me and I'm sorry to say it reads 'librarian' in my imaginarium. But then again, if you are doing it, you might as well DO it and go for the entire vintage look. AND make it cool and sexy, in your own particular way

7/8 is the most flattering to my eye. The longer versions seem a little overwhelming, although it may be because of the tall boots. Love the length of the black skirt!

I'm torn. I was going to say 7/8 but saramir makes a good point about the schoolgirl uniform. I also like her idea of taking the sides in just a bit for an A-line shape. I'm no help.
Both skirts remind me of the ones my first college roommate had from New York in 1964. However hers were above the knee kilts with a huge kilt pin in front to one side. She wore them with a button down shirt, navy knee socks and loafers.

Cute skirt. I prefer at or just below the knee, particularly with tall boots. However, the right skirt looks good worn long with boots.

Still, I am preferring 5/6 or 7/8.

I like the shorter lengths, 5/6 or 7/8, especially if you are going to be wearing it with these boots. I have a very strong preference for seeing some leg (or tights) between boots and skirt.

I think somewhere between just-below-the-knee and just a little shorter than original. #4 side view looks perfect. Knee-length reads too schoolgirl uniform for me and takes away from the classic blanket-skirt look that I think makes this skirt so fun.

The only thing I am sort of questioning is whether you might also get the waist & top of the sides taken in a bit to be more flattering on your hips. I might be projecting, as I just took in 2 of my LE a-line wool skirts for slimming (keeping the a-line, but bringing them in), so I have that on my mind.

ps - I'm loving loving loving this skirt on you; the colors are amazing with your coloring. (I had eyed it in LE for months but never pulled the trigger and now I'm inspired again by you!).

So here are some pictures of different lengths with my boots. I first thought I'd go for knee length, but then some of you thought this would be great longer. I obvisouly wouldn't wear this skirt with bare legs, but I wanted you to see where my boots end. It's a bit hard to pin this much fabric up, so please excuse when it looks uneven or doesn't drape nicely.

#1/2
Original length for comparison.

#3/4
Just a tad shorter.

#5/6
Just under the knees.

#7/8
Kneelength.

#9
Where I plan for the other skirt to end.

Any preferences? Or maybe a length in between?
