I also agree - I like the skirt and it suits you well. The sweater is also lovely.

It is hard when you have a style change - and how to do this within a budget and within your lifestyle. I wanted to have some dressy pieces when I had young children too.

I think flat leather knee high boots would be a great piece to wear with skirts and dresses.... or jeans. A bit of a pain to take on and off but maybe worth it?

I'm with everyone - skirt is fun, sweater is pretty, you are adorable!
I feel somewhat similar in wanting to add different things this season - slightly more dressy, structured, refined.
Looking back at my post-pregnancy in the 90s is brining back similar feelings - I could not exercise for a while ( it was just painful ) and decided to give my body time to heal at slow pace. The body and muscles rebuild themselves to certain extend - it just took longer than all the magazines would tell you.

Dreika, I think that’s why I have felt a little ambivalent about the skirt: it just needs more color with it! So going to work it. I have been knitting two new sweaters and bought a couple tops. They have potential. But what it really needs and wants is a turtleneck sweater. So I’m going to knit one.

Dreika and Leisbeth, it’s funny how motherhood throws us into identity tailspins isn’t it? Thank you both for sharing. Somehow I felt I was the only one who had such experiences. As more women share with me, I find that’s not true. But I wish all of it was talked about more. A lot of women, especially younger women, seem to have themselves so pulled together after having a baby. I was a slightly older mom (mid 30s) who had one heck of a traumatic labor and delivery
and no friends or family nearby. (We moved crosscountry right before the birth.) It took months to even get back on my feet. And it’s taken me a couple years to feel myself again and fully heal. My style and confidence is just now feeling good again too. Slowly getting there.

I love that skirt on you. I also went through a substantial sartorial transition after the huge transition into motherhood. At first I thought I wanted to look more feminine, but I landed on a tomboyish style so apparently it had more to do with polish & interest levels for me. Like, the nerdy thrown together look of my late twenties, with big minimalist influences, just started to feel frumpy and uninspired on me (and I already felt frumpy and invisible as a new mom all by itself).

Beautiful skirt and the outfit with the chambray shirt looks flattering and ladylike on you. Definitely relate to the need of a change after becoming a mother. Had similar experience after both my pregnancies - craving something more ladylike, elegant and with a presence.
Agree with Suntiger that the skirt would look fantastic with a strong color in top - red, cobalt, green, black - whatever you have, just to be in a saturated hue.

Jess, thank you! I m really happy with the skirt. I think I overthink fitting into boxes and making sure it’s perfect. So that’s been a process to work through. Black heels... that is a fabulous idea! I don’t have any. I have shied away from heels and lightweight shoes in the winter because my feet get so cold. (We are talking painful, purple toes through May. Doctors have no answers.) So I really pay for wearing heels in winter, even to church for an hour or two. But I’ve considered getting the shoe version of those little warm up packets you squeeze and hold. So if those help or work, black heels would be amazing! Idk what draws me to that photo but I just adore it!

Bijou,,, oooo! You see CH in this? That’s a huge boost! Thanks for the sweater love boho... I have always veered more towards dressy or glamorous boho. There is a gypsy side to me. But the polished side of me never feels comfortable in true boho, with fringed suede and ragged jeans. But I love all of
The embroidery, suede, and bloused styles.

Kathie, thank you very much! I didn’t see the warm and cool component. I’m glad you mentioned that!

torontogirl, omgoodness!! Down to earth bombshell!!! Oh that is perfect!! Thank you for saying that ❤️ I think after playing around with words more, bombshell feels more true to my heart than romantic. I started the year with Sensual Romantic. But the romantic part feels a little too airy and light, not enough substance or weight. After reading your comment, I’m playing with Bohemian Bombshell. We’ll see if that helps guide me more.

Thank you all!! You really made my morning to log in and see your feedback! I realized what would be so helpful to me is to begin a blog here so I can flesh out my journey and thoughts. So I may do that if and as time permits.

JAileen, I will post photos when it is finished. I feel we need a “What I Made” category yes?

Angie, thank you!!! And I agree, a tucked in top is best with this skirt. That certainly feels best to me. I do wonder about playing with a looser dolman blouse. But I haven’t worn the skirt yet.

Rachylou, thank you!! What is drawing you to more womanly? I know for myself I’m tired of the super casual, boxy fitting clothes. And Chelsea boots with skinny jeans and oversized tops. I think I need more opulence and elegance, something more that stands out in sea of homogenized fashion.

Joy, thank you!! I’m excited to finish it and share photos with you all!!

Suntiger, mmm! That is a great idea about the color. I think a deeper top, especially in burgandy/wine land would really make the skirt and the whole outfit pop. I have my eye on knitting a deep bourdeaux sweater this autumn. So more to come!

Katerina, thank you! I’ve been knitting for nearly 20 years. This is my first time knitting a fine gauge traditional fair isle sweater. I’ve made myself a couple of items. But mostly I’ve knitted for others, and never an entire sweater at this gauge. So we shall see how it goes!

Shevia, I feel we are kindred spirits and so enjoy your wisdom and perspective. Thank you for a gentle reminder. Fluctuation sometimes is challenging for me. I think because the last 4 years have been huge, dramatic changes, with big joys and big trials. I am onlt now starting to feel grounded and secure again but my hope is that I have gained more resilience to dance and flow with fluctuation instead of panicking.

So... I feel very transitional. Not seasonally, but stylistically. I got a 50% coupon for my entire purchase from ModCloth. Sometimes ModCloth is a little too ‘vintage fan girl’ for me. (Nothing against anyone who loves and wears that style!) But I’ve gotten some really pretty dresses from them. And since I am down to the very bottom of the closet barrel, I decided that it was such a good deal that I couldn’t pass.

This skirt caught my eye. It seems to be a quarter or half circle skirt, as it’s not cut flared even though it does have side seams. The colors I admit are not my first love, a bit warmer than I usually wear or choose. But I love the satin lining! The belt I feel kinda indifferent about. Overall, the skirt is very comfortable, with elastic in the back and functional side pockets. I don’t love the matching belt. But it’s easy enough to substitute it if I wish.

What do you all think? I feel I still don’t have much to wear it with. The vibe is a bit more 70s than I thought it would be. But I feel it would be really pretty with boots and booties and blouses. It reminds me of the Vutton editorial photo of the woman in the turtleneck which has always struck me.

Currently I own the following to wear with it:
Black embroidered chiffon boho blouse
Chambray button down shirt (in photo)
Short, vintage inspired handknit sweater (currently knitting it and will be finished with it soon; see photos for finished sweater and in progress. ☺️ )

I still love bohemian. Somehow bohemian just doesn’t feel quite womanly enough to me now. Perhaps because I wore it for 6 or 7 years prior to having a baby? I’ve found myself loving more towards ladylike and romantic. Christina Hendricks and her style has really caught my eye this autumn. It’s just more polished and glamorous. I feel I’m really searching and trying a lot. Anyone else go through such a fashion transition?
