I am so late to the party but the coat shape did not send me either. I think the color is unexpectedly fab. Though so that give you kaleidoscope thought. Also if you did a non-trench style, would still want to see a bit more definition in the shoulders or something

You have a great sense of style and are adventuresome in trying things out. Keep it up!

Oh NO! I can at least appreciate the post for it's inspiration. (marking as my one of my favorites).
Well if these pieces don't make you completely happy they don't deserve to be in your closet. I'm sure you can recreate a similar style with things that you own that have passed muster. C'est la vie.

I love the whole outfit especially with the coat. I have yet to pick up one of those zigzag print dresses but this makes me want one even more. I love how you added the red and the organic print in the scarf -- it's such a nice juxtaposition of the a rigid graphic and a soft organic floral. The coat (love the cut and color) is fabulous and ties everything together nicely without stealing thunder from the dress. Well done as usual Shannon!

I want to thank you all so much for taking the time to chime in on these items. I've tried them again and you know what? I'm just feeling kind of "meh" about them and they will be going back. I think the fit on both the dress and the trench just aren't 100% and I'm no longer willing to settle for less. I'm holding out for better 'cause I'm worth it!

Shannon, you know I love you in the B44 dress because it was you who inspired me to buy it! Something about this dress looks a little off. I think it's too loose around the shoulders and neckline. Is my impression caused by the photo, or do you see it in person too?

I am also curious to see the dress in a smaller size, for comparison at least! I like the body con aspect of your other dress, I think it looks great on you - but of course you have to feel great too.
I like the trench but I don't love it. I think it is a little overwhelming. I think it's the sheen that bothers me a bit, a matte grey would be fine for spring.

I am wondering if the issue with the coat is that you have your heart set on a trench and this coat is more of a swing coat than a trench coat. I know you have no issues with surrendering the waist so that isn't it. Have you considered that perhaps the coat deviates from the pre-conceived idea of what you wanted, i.e., what was on your list?

I still like the dress as is. I prefer this type of body con dress to be a slightly looser fit rather than risk having it show any areas that aren't perfectly smooth.

I love the dress on you. I can't tell if you should size down, I think we would have to see more angles and also how it fits in motion, but go with what feels right. I am less sold on the trench as others. I feel like it is a bit overwhelming on you now, and bound to become even more so if you see what I mean. But the color is great, and it is certainly not bad, so take what I say for what it is worth!

Huh, Suz - we ARE twins now! I also wanted to see a size down on Shannon! :-)
Shannon, I really love the trench on you. Color is not drab at all - actually grey is an excellent foil for bright colors you have in abundance in your spring wardrobe. The shape is fun and slightly retro but still modern. Keep please!

I think the dress looks a tad big in the photo but I hear you about mirror/photos and real life. If you are uncomfortable in the smaller size listen to your inner voice for sure.

Tina and Suz - thank you so much for your comments about the trench. I think just because it is not a traditional trench that I am questioning it some.

Suz - you are a boost to my self esteem lady! The size smaller in the dress fit very similar to the B44, which I've always felt a bit self conscious in and will not wear by itself, at least not yet. I think I'll order the size smaller (the sale ends tonight) and then post the two for comparison sake. Sound like a plan?

Shannon, what are you not liking about the trench? I really love the colour, swing fit, and overall vibe for you. (Hey, I'd like one for me, too...) Actually, it's a duster RAINCOAT, not a "trench" as I understand it. Which makes it really fun as a wardrobe addition. I had a coat shaped like that in the 90s and wore it completely to death. LOVED it. Yes, it was big and boxy, but I could layer under it whatever I needed, and it somehow felt a bit elegantly oversized.

The dress. The dress. I LOVE the dress. But you know what? I almost think you should maybe have kept the size down. What do you think? Maybe that is just an effect of the photo. But don't forget, you will be getting smaller. And while I know you don't want to be too body con....well...I feel like this isn't giving you the waist defintion your VC top or Bailey's dress does. Maybe try it with your Danier jacket, too?

Gosh I love those booties. Wish they had worked for me. Love the scarf, too!

Shannon, love that dress on you! Such a flattering silhouette. I think the trench is lovely, grey is a classic that will work in any season. I really like the retro styling too, definitely suits you. I think the decision comes down to which shape do you prefer, the belted style or the trapeze shape. There is no wrong decision here at all. I have both in my wardrobe!

There was a post on YLF recently the lead to an article about how the camera distorts the photo, based on the lense size and the angle that the photo is taken at. It was interesting and made me realize that the mirror probably doesn't lie as much as I previously thought.

Oh, found the article. Have a quick read, then look in the mirror again! (I now know why I like professional photos so much, the photographer has the correct lenses to get the real life to look like real life! LOL)

And I almost bought that same dress here yesterday but they didn't have my size. All the stores are closed here today, I'm surprised yours are open in Winnipeg!

I really like the charcoal color of your new trench coat and you rock a retro style, beautifully, so the trapeze shape is nice. So happy for you!

Shannon I like both of these. The dress is great on you. I'm a little envious because this dress did nothing for me :(. Love the grey trench. Great colour and the way you have lifted it with the red is gorgeous. FWIW I have the same issue with some clothing. Looks awesome in the mirror but not so much in the photo. Unless the photo is revealing something significant, I go with how I look in the mirror

Woohoo, shopping on a holiday!

I really like the trench. it may be traditionally figure flattering, but I think it looks quite good on you! That said, it does have a retro vibe to it. Reminds me of the coat my grandmother had in some old photos.

It is a positively miserable day here today - blowing, cold, snowy - so what do we do in Winnipeg on that kind of day when it's a holiday? Why, we go shopping of course!

I went specifically to Cleo Petite to get the black/white B44 knock off that I posted about a while ago. It is 30% off (sale ending today) so despite the weather, off I went. I got my usual size, but the size smaller also fit (whoo hoo!). It was just a little more body con and I wasn't looking for that so went with my regular size. This isn't a K/R - just wanted to show you what I bought.

While there, however, I fell in love with this charcoal trench for spring - you know, for when spring actually arrives here! I tried on the navy one I had posted about before but absolutely hated it on me. This one I'm showing you has no defined waist. It does have a kick pleat in the back, but it's stitched shut for the moment. It fits well in the shoulder and I can layer a blazer underneath, which is absolutely crucial for me as I wear a lot of blazers to work. It is a petite size and I think the length works ok with a dress. In the store, I tried it on with my jeans and it looked nice. I like the slight trapeze shape (retro to me) and the large collar, which can be done right up to the top. I also like the deep pockets.

I like the charcoal colour - neutral but not black. I tried it on as well in a coral colour which was lovely but just not as versatile. This is not a shape which is traditionally flattering however, with there being no waist definition and that is where my keep/return question comes in to play. What do you think?

ETA: It's interesting when looking at these pictures of the trench and the dress. This isn't at all how they look in my mirror - in the pictures, I'm not sure I like either of these pieces and yet when I look at myself IRL and in my mirror, they look much, much better. This just confuses me.
