Great finds! My favorites are the leopard scarf, denim shirt, and denim jacket.

I really like what you said: "between considering fashion a hobby, and trying to be a conscious
consumer. I am working on making the hobby part come more from
researching and idea-gathering, and less from purchasing."

Good thoughts to consider.

Thank you, Suz. That is reassuring.

That actually reminds me of when I went into Eddie Bauer back in June and the SA recognized me enough to ask, "Here for your seasonal update?" I asked her how she knew, and she said, "Oh, that's just the way you shop."

I guess this is just a bigger seasonal update than most, because it's combined with a style update rather than simple functionality. I can accept that, so long as I haven't, as you so aptly put it, "set loose a beast."

What a terrific set of items. I think this was a fabulous update.

I also want to reassure you a little bit. I was in a similar position after weight loss and didn't have anything to wear. So I had to do a LOT of updating as soon as I had the cash to do it. And I did. Last year was a particularly big year for shopping. And I wondered if I had perhaps set loose a beast that I wouldn't be able to tame.

Here to report that I still shop in big seasonal batches -- but I don't buy anywhere near what I was buying a year or two ago.

Last F/W I bought a pile of stuff at NAS and then a few items between Sept-Oct. And then -- apart from long undies and winter boots -- I didn't shop at all for 5 months. Not on purpose. I just didn't want or need to.

The same happened in the spring. I bought some footwear for a trip in March, and then a few items for a summer trip in June -- and that was it. No more shopping until NAS.

It's just my style to shop in a seasonal way, and it serves me quite well. Maybe you will turn out to be similar. I would rather think about clothes and shopping in concentrated doses and do other stuff the rest of the time.

If you're keen to add olive, fall is probably a better time to buy it. It can be tough to find in spring. Not to encourage you to buy more, or anything

Maneera - Thank you! Likewise, you've inspired me to want to love my closet and enjoy the things I have to the fullest.

shedev - Thanks. I don't think the colors in my wardrobe are quite represented in the proportions I'd prefer, but I'm getting there. I suspect I'll add more olive when spring rolls around and I move back away from so much denim.

celia - If only we lived in the same country, I think we'd shop well together!

Carole - Yes! That's exactly how I'd like to approach fashion as a hobby. It's not so different, I suppose, from gardening. I pore over seed and bulb catalogs, but the real reward is in the results.

donnat - You can thank avettestingray for discovering that sweater. I copycatted almost as soon as I saw it, and I'm glad I did, as it sold out quickly.

JAileen - Thank you, and yes, I'm definitely on Team Wear.

Aida - I purchased the bottoms with fall in mind, so they'll work--two pairs of jeans, chinos (which will be more for transition), and thick plaid leggings. I also have a wool skirt that I need to have altered down a size. I feel like t-shirts are all over the place in terms of lifespan. I'm annoyed about the CPW on the J.Crew Factory tee, given that I air-dried it every time, and it wasn't super-cheap. I mended it and will still wear it as a layering piece, though. My favorite short sleeve tee is a $5 Old Navy basic that's still going strong after several years of hard wear. You just can't tell.

I know you feel like you've shopped a ton, but based on how little of your cool weather wardrobe survived I think this is a great little seasonal capsule. Overall these items fit your desired style aesthetic quite nicely, too. Are the bottoms acquired in July and August going to work for your fall/winter?

Your grocery analogy is about right; I usually do one or two larger refreshers for a season and then pick up a few additional pieces here and there.

Did want to also mention that with a small wardrobe, I wouldn't expect tees to last much beyond the season.

You seem to have the perfect capsule here and I love your color palette and all your new purchases! I've been meaning to put together a little visual of my colors and you have inspired me to do so!

I relate to fashion as a hobby in terms of gathering ideas and researching....spending time organizing, and creating capsules with what I already have proves I really have plenty to play with and keeps me from shopping! And when I do shop, I'm focused on needs and how it fits in with everything else I already have.

Stephanie - The striped tee was from J.Crew Factory. Find added below. I have the same tee in charcoal stripes, and found a hole in it after only five wears. I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed, but it could also be totally my fault, as I went out stick-hunting for an art project in it. :)

salt-sea - Here's a Find for the cream tee from LL Bean. It has a slub texture to it, but the fabric is fairly thick. When I tried it on, I felt comfortable wearing it with a skin-tone bra and no cami.

rute - Thanks! There's always a tension between considering fashion a hobby, and trying to be a conscious consumer. I am working on making the hobby part come more from researching and idea-gathering, and less from purchasing.

Word Lily - Thanks. I'll be in honest in that I do feel a little off the rails, but I have confidence all these pieces will get plenty of wear. In fact, according to Closetspace, I've already worn that hat eight times!

I definitely get the boho vibe from the hat, ikat scarf and embroidered shirt and the cream sweater is definitely bookish. I can't wait to see how you style these pieces together.

One of my goals in September was to shop consciously, and according to my needs. As near as I can tell, I subsisted last fall and winter on three pairs of pants (that I completely wore through), a couple of sweaters, a flannel, and some ill-fitting graphic t-shirts. I needed an update.

I updated a lot, buying new bottoms and shoes in July and August, and major updates this month. I didn't shop sustainable retailers, as I had a hard time finding items in my size, but I did (mostly) stick to a list, and tried to purchase quality items.

I'm hoping this kind of shopping in September works out to be the sartorial equivalent of spending $150 at the grocery store on Monday, to avoid spending $200 in $30 increments over the course of the week. With the exception of a cardigan, and possibly a pair of booties, I think my cold season needs are met.

Pic below. Starred items were direct replacements/one-in-one-out.
