You look great in red! As an apple I can commiserate about the difficulty of finding jeans that fit. If they're comfy on you, keep. If not, there are plenty of other fish/jeans in the sea. I was just trying some more jeans on today and did not feel fab in the expensive Mother jeans, the waist size was correct but they were too fitted below the waist and it made me look like I had a double butt in both the front and back. I found another pair on the sale rack that was looser cut and turns out it was $35, so yay!

Gorgeous red top on you! You really rock red! For jeans if you have any doubt, pass. There are so many rises, fits, and fabrications, that there's no need to settle for a pair that has any questions about fit. If they are not comfortable when standing and sitting in the dressing room, if they bring up any doubt, it won't go away when you own them.

I often run into this problem too. Some jeans stretch out enough in the waist to eventually work out, but it is certainly worth looking at other options first. YLF in any case!

I have a similar body type to yours and, I find a slightly higher rise works better than mid rise to contain waist spillage. I’m also short waisted, so for me 10.5 inches works well as a higher, not too high, rise. With mid-rises, I have to have stretch in the waist but even then, they hit sort of awkwardly. I like those jeans on you, but I think you can find better ones!

Helena firstly red is fabulous on you. I have to agree with LJP never settle if your not happy with the jeans. I have done that so many times and always regretted it as it’s a waste of money as I never wore the items I didn’t feel I loved.

Red sweater for the win.
Re the jeans —I’m trying to learn from my inner voice, and if I’m hearing a little voice finding issues, will I hear that issue every time ? Only you can answer that question.

Ooh - looking forward to hearing more about your visit to Simon's! I'm with the others in loving the red top on you - it's the perfect shade. Not sure about the jeans though - it's a tough one. I just will not settle for less than perfect in terms of comfort or fit . Making do has never, ever worked for me and I end up still chasing the perfect item.

Thank you all, so helpful!!! They were very comfortable, passed the sit test, and the spillage was not obvious with the top on. I'll sleep on it but may decide to pull the trigger given they ticked every other box ...

Thanks for the red top love! I can't wait to wear it! Xx

Love that red top on you!

And the jeans look good, too. I do think the "spillage" problem can be solved with a slightly different cut. But also, sometimes, if there is any stretch in the jeans, do a sit test, walk around in them, etc. Sometimes that is just enough to make the difference!

The jeans and top look great on you.
If you feel that the spillover that you mention would not prevent you from wearing the jeans, and that they are comfortable when moving around, they would be a go.

Agree with Lise and Slim cat. I have a similar problem sometimes solved by a lower rise or higher rise--either under the spillage or over. I generally wear woven or sweaters with ease so no one is the wiser. Those jeans look great!

You look fab! The jeans might be not a perfect fit but nobody will know it . I have mid rise straight jeans that slightly do the same - still wear it with tops coming a bit over the waist line. The higher rise is not comfortable for me and is not a preferred choice ( short waist and sensitive stomach ).

You do look fab in red! I collect weight on my tummy and have slim legs and narrow hips and not much butt. I have this side spillage problem a lot and live with it. That is why I hardly ever tuck tighter tops and wear more fluid ones a little longer. Even so a mid-rise is my favourite. Too high rises are uncomfortable in the rib cage. Like you said a bigger pair does not fit in the butt and thigh area and is a no go.

Helena, the red top looks fantastic!

You are not a curvy jeans body type ;)

In my experience of dressing varying body types, a higher rise does offset "spillage". Just a little higher so that it doesn't aggravate your rib cage. A bit of stretch in the fabric can be helpful.

A mid-rise with a higher back rise can fit better too. The higher back rise can offset spillage. I think that's why "curvy jeans" came up in your search. They tend to have higher rises at the back.

As for these jeans, they look KILLER. Do the sit down test, and move around in them. Do they slip off or slide? Do you need to pull the waist up when you're sitting because they are a little too low? It's ALL about what is most comfortable.

Hi friends, I have a chance to visit the downtown Toronto Simon's store ( coincidentally had it planned already for the week of Angie's department store post!). I'll have to do a more full some review at some point, but I have a question about jeans. I tried a pair that I really loved, they were comfortable, the style I was looking for, and a good price point. BUT they were a midrise on me and I had a fit dilemma:

- the smaller size fit perfectly but I have a little side-waist spillage ... Weirdly I have a bit of gap at the back so they weren't tight at all, so I chalked this up to the rise. It didn't show up much with the top on so I debated living with it.

- the next size up there was no spillage but they were way too big in the hip and upper thigh and looked terrible. This was a no go for sure.

I think the waist problem would be fixed in the rise was higher ... But the issue with a higher rise is that on my short waist it would be almost at my rib cage! The proportion becomes problematic.

So my question is ... Do I have to trade off between these too annoyances and decide what I can live with? Or were the jeans just wrong? I looked online and the suggestion was I might need a curvier fit but with my straight hips and thighs that's definitely not the solution *facepalm*

Appreciate the collective wisdom! Here is a fitting room photo of the jeans in question with my successful purchase, a short sleeve knit in my favourite shade of red. Xx
