I chose a small, which would be my normal size, and it is roomy enough for a heavy sweater without making it tight, but it doesn't feel sloppy. It's also so lightweight that it doesn't particularly feel *big* if that makes sense. I would say purchase your normal size, or else size down one if you prefer a slimmer fit. But my short puffer (though very fitted) was such a useful item that I took a chance on the little puff last year and I'm a convert. As you said, the looser shape felt more current, it was more lightweight (better for my current climate) than my other puffers, and it immediately became a workhorse. DH shops there almost exclusively and has a really smart workwear wardrobe.
