Irina, this is a wise way to look at how to add onto your wardrobe and style. I especially identify with your footwear and accessory shopping strategy (fussy feet have to take what they can get at the time )

NICE complement of enhancers and essentials.

Yes, I very much relate to what you are sharing! It's been a rough time (understatement of the decade). It sounds like you have given a great deal of thought to how to proceed, and your plan sounds very reasonable and smart. You new additions are practical and beautiful, which is a lovely combination.

I think your planned strategy is the right one for your situation. I have a similar number of items and am not happy with it either. I will only replace essentials that wear out, which I am identifying more accurately through tracking wears.

Hi five! You know I agree with the slow accumulation strategy, and then shopping the accumulated pieces. Related to Angie’s post today, I have and enjoy wearing my black baby bootcuts from the Gap in the 90s. I insisted on natural fibers as a kid because they were most comfortable to me, and that’s what I still seek out. You select items with such care, it will be fun to see them move between front and back of your closet and get remixed over the years.

Your plan sounds excellent and the pieces you chose look just right for you. I am no one's idea of a wardrobe moderate, but I have found that refining the art of rejection can be as fulfilling as acquisition. Specifically a trip to the thrift shop where I return empty handed is its own pleasure.

Well done on acknowledging the situation and establishing a solution. You are conscious of any new additions to your wardrobe, so it sounds like you have things under control.

I like the strategy and the term enhancement items. And I love your additions!!

I do a similar thing- replacing or updating essentials as needed. Sometimes it is not a direct replacement - eg my navy shirt replaced a tee shirt. And allowing myself about 10 extras a year. According to my system I only have one more enhancement allowed this year which will be footwear of some type. And a couple of basic summer tops to replace worn out pieces.

I've just done another cull of duplicates and well-worn items. Ideally, I would learn from experience but it certainly is difficult to break patterns that offer some emotional satisfaction.

Runcarla, I do take good care of my things, you are absolutely right. I also buy clothes made of natural fibers and with a proper care, it lasts long time. More reasons to cut down on buying new stuff.

I was nodding along to this,l think that my wardrobe has expanded alittle too much in the pandemic as well, like you said, comfort and boredom. It’s great that you haven’t launched into to a cull, that shows that you probably made good choices when you did purchase. You ve owned the problem and made a plan for going forward so lm sure it’s just a blip on the journey towards wardrobe mastery!

What Carla said. Our wardrobe needs changed with WFH, for sure. I added a lot of gear and some loungewear and kept a lot of dressier items without wearing them at all -- so my closet seems to have expanded also. I think it will contract again as I figure out my new life patterns.

You can’t discount the fact that WFH has probably resulted in less wear and tear on your professional and dressy garments and growth in size of casual/leisure wear. I also suspect that you take very good care of your garments - you always look pristine!

I’ve been looking for some time for ways to change how I approach shopping. My small to medium size wardrobe grew in the last 24 months at the pace I found disturbing. My total count, including shoes, bags and scarves but not lounge wear is now 234 items and this is the biggest wardrobe I’ve ever had. Yes, I do acknowledge the reasons: not wearing out some of my clothes, comfort shopping, boredom. Even so, I must change my ways, the large wardrobe has never been my goal.
I’m not going to cull much of my perfectly suitable clothes and shoes unless due to fit issues I find it unwearable. I’m not looking to edit the wardrobe to smaller size or to impose a shopping ban but to find a way to satisfy my love of clothes and fashion while maintaining a slower pace of growth. I want to take great care and be very selective on what I might add.
Some forum members have been a great inspiration to me as I decided on the shopping rules that would work for me.
For now, I want to purchase two categories:
- direct replacement of a worn out item. I expect to buy one or none per month.
- enhancement items. I don’t call them “statements “, although they can be that but also some wardrobe holes. No more than one per month.
And no duplicates of any kind.

I don’t exactly include in this count shoes and accessories. My shoe collection is moderate sized, I have extremely fussy feet and can’t predict when I might stumble upon shoes that fit. And I don’t purchase accessories often, a few in a year. But they must either enhance or replace an item in my wardrobe.

I started in September and my purchases were:
1. Aritzia puffer, replacement for 6 years old, worn out Gap puffer
2. Marimekko pattern wool scarf, replacement for 6 years old RL scarf
3. Black winter Converse - winter wardrobe hole
4. Black mid weight wool Rag & Bone scarf - winter wardrobe hole. Still undecided on this one since I have a black cashmere one but I find it a bit too thick.

Thank you for reading. All comments and opinions are welcome.
