RobinF, yes, it's sometimes funny to read the contradictory reviews. When that happens I tend to take a chance on the item if I want it enough (who knows, I might be the one to break the tie).

always trying, this happened to me with a Garnet Hill cardigan that is universally beloved. I had been reading so many rave reviews for several years that when I ordered, I was sure the cardi was going to be fabulous (I ordered two at once, which I never do). And it was terrible on me!

Ryce, yes, if everyone put in some sort of sizing indication, reviews would work even better. The ones that mention body type, height, weight etc are the best. I always put that info plus my bra size (if reviewing tops).

If I were a bit more tech-savvy I'd create a blog for "Zara Reviews" and "H&M reviews" (and more), so people could share their input there...

Always trying, I don't read reviews based on positive or negative, but on the specific info they provide. A review that says "pretty dress, fits me great" or "this wool sweater makes me itch, like wool sweaters usually do" are a complete waste of everyone's time! Meanwhile, if a pair of pants has a lot of "negative" reviews because others find it "too big in the waist", I know those pants have a high likelihood of fitting me well. Negative reviews about "needs ironing" don't bother me because I iron most things. Meanwhile those kind souls who make the effort to share their height and weight, or the size they wear in some similar item, or other descriptors of their body type really helps me order efficiently.

I just make sure about returns, like Nords, the rack, DSW for shoes and Amazon, etc. reviews can drive me batty. One person raves about something the then the next person hates the item. I do however pass on things that have more bad reviews. Also I have bought things that I had to return that had grate reviews.

Agree, I love it when I can read reviews. I am a hesitant online shopper anyway and it helps a lot if I can see what others like or don't like about the item. Although I do find that they often directly contradict each other.

Joy, I also look at Zappos and Amazon for reviews on 6pm items, which works most of the time but not all.

Jenn, that's a good point. I wonder if it adds too much to the maintenance cost of the site though. Because if it doesn't, then it would be almost costless to keep a review section open regardless of how long it's open for. I'm not a business person so I have no idea if this makes sens.

Suz, free and easy returns are essential when there are no reviews!

cindysmith, same here; also for third-party sellers on Amazon. On Amazon I will order products with no reviews because with Prime I have free shipping and returns, and they make it really easy. And then I often love being the first to post a review but it's usually not for clothing items.

Yeah, I'm always hesitant to order from places that don't have reviews. I shop a lot at Etsy, and if a seller is new and doesn't have many reviews, I wait to order from that seller until there are a number of reviews.

This is a great question. I suspect Jenn is right about the reason, but I agree that reviews are important and I rely on them.

I will order from Zara because (unlike most retailers in Canada) returns are free. So there is little cost to me to try an item. But there are others I will not order from if I can't read reviews.

The sites you mentioned--Zara, 6pm, and H&M--all go through inventory faster than other retailers. Zara and H&M are fast fashion and 6pm is a closeout site. It could just be that it's not worth it for them to maintain a review system given the speed of their availability windows. By the time enough customers receive items, form an opinion, and leave reviews, those items are no longer available and the reviews do little good.

Can't make the same argument for Barney's, though...

I rely on reviews and use reviews on Zappos for 6pm when I can, but it is annoying to search them out. This process often cools my enthusiasm to buy anything from the site.

La Belle Demimondaine, it took me a long time to order anything online from Zara or H&M precisely because of no reviews. I usually only do if it's an item similar to something I've tried before. I wonder how many customers they are losing because of this.

Sara L., very true--what some reviewers disliked sometimes ended up being a plus for me.

Xtabay, exactly about fabric and quality, especially when people post reviews after wearing and washing an item.

And on the other side of the spectrum there are the retailers like J.Crew, Boden, and Garnet Hill, which have people who READ the reviews, take feedback into account when designing new items or revising old ones, and sometimes even respond to reviewers. The other day I posted a critical review on J.Crew Factory and got a personal email suggesting a similar item with a different fabric; I already had my eye on this second item and that personal email pushed me to buy it.

I was just noticing this the other day, and was wondering the same thing. I prefer to shop on sites that have reviews, because they never show "real people" modeling the clothing. Also, sometimes there are issues of fabric quality that aren't apparent in the photos. Like Sara, negative reviews don't always bother me, but rather help me to get an overall feel for the item when factored in with the other reviews.

I'm always annoyed when sites don't have reviewed. I usually get valuable input on fit and fabric from reading reviews. Also, a negative review isn't always a bad thing - it depends on what the reviewer didn't like about the item. For example - the reviewer complains that the shirt is too long, but I'm looking for a long shirt, so that's actually a plus in my book.

I think you're onto something here, when you talk about availability of reviews - I tend not to shop at online retailers who don't allow customers to post reviews, particularly if I don't know the brand. Maybe this is something retailers should consider, in the current fashion-business climate.

Why do you think some sites like H&M, Zara, and 6pm don't let people post reviews? Is it because it drives up the cost of maintaining the site? Or some other reason? I also just noticed that Barneys doesn't have item reviews, so cost doesn't seem like the only reason.

Sometimes I'll search the web to see if people have reviewed the items elsewhere (with 6pm sometimes it works), or if they took a pic wearing the item, but for the most part it doesn't work.

I just ordered a pair of paints from Zara and had to return them, and I bet if there had been reviews I would have understood the fit better (the lanky model was definitely not an accurate representation of how the pants fit on most people).
