I tried on 5 pairs. The J Crew Billie works for me and I'm not surprised. It's high rise, the legs are fairly skinny and the flair is small. Even though I'm tall I can't handle much flare. It looks odd on me, -maybe because I have narrow hips? Maybe because I have muscular legs? In any case, I was thinking the same way as you and about to give up when I tried the Billie.

I lucked into a pair of cropped kick flares 18 months ago on a steep markdown rack at The Limited. They're black, substantial woven, subtly pinstriped, with a faux leather waistband, and they looked (and still look) SO GOOD on me. I was floored.

I think they're just barely at the recommended 2" minimum above my ankle bone, if that, but somehow they work so well.

I'm 5'6", and a curvy size 12-14. I'm not sure that, if I set out now to find a pair that flattered me, I could do so. I literally just got lucky. Love them and will wear them into the ground.

I will enjoy cropped pants, flared or not, on others. I am short with extra, extra, EXTRA short heavy legs. I need to hem Petite range pants to PPL. And I have fussy, hard to fit feet, so getting the footwear just right is a worry. I might try them in a B&M store if they have my size and I have time to kill, you know, just for kicks. Cropped flares are less likely to get hung up on my calves, so that's a plus. But I run so cold (Reynaud's in my toes) that I generally wear socks with shoes, so that doesn't work with shorter pants.

But y'a know? There's other styles I am able to wear like peplums that I know other women struggle with.

I am a little surprised so many people are finding these so challenging, but that may be my long-legged privilege showing.

In all seriousness, I think this is a style that requires some JFE embracing. With my wide hips and thick thighs, I know this is not THE most flattering look, but I think the length of my legs helps save it. I do have to style thoughtfully though, and I prefer the look with a bit of a heel or platform to help visually lengthen (and therefore slim) my legs. Still, I can't help but think that if I can wear them, most anyone can find a way to make them work!

I've been wearing cropped pants for a long time - I think you could say they are my signature: flared or otherwise. But the real point is that they worked well enough and felt right on me, unlike a lot of other things.

I don't think fashion is always easy. So I always come back to being so happy we live in a time where there are SO MANY CHOICES! You really don't have to buy into a trend that is hard to make work for you, or that you don't really get, or don't really like.

I don't think cropped pants or cropped flares only work on certain body types but I also know that only you know your threshold for patience when it comes to finding just the right pair. My threshold for patience is very short; also, I rarely hold out for "just the right pair" of ANYTHING. I decide if I can live with something or I move on quickly if it's terrible. Life is too short, and there are too many fashion fish in the sea.

Yes, way too tricky for this lazy woman. I'm going to keep life simple and pass on the kick flares, since I already have plenty of other jeans. Maybe a pair will just fall in my lap and magically style themselves, who knows? No, I'm never that lucky!

I have hacked a pair of old bootcut jeans in order to give the trend a try. What attracts me to it is that it shows your boots more than full length flares. And I really love my boots. I also wear jeans a lot so fresh looks in denim are appealing. But I agree it is a tricky trend and I am not sure yet whether I will spend $$$ getting some proper kick flares. I will see how the hacked pair go

I tried the BR resin and they didn't have all sizes in, but I almost liked them, except I think they may have been a tich longer than the intended look. So I coukdnt bite right then and don't have time to work on casual stuff.
My bigger issue is I need my summef pants to work with fkats such as liafers, oxfords of whatever sneaker is on the go.

I just purchased the BR crop flares. I'm surprised, but I really enjoy wearing them. They are such a welcome change from the capris of years past, and I found the proportions easier than the ankle pants that have permeated the marketplace --- those I've found very tricky, unless I"m wearing heels.

Now, as a curvy size 14, I'd never leave my bootcuts if I wanted to go simply on figure flattery, but I crave variety. That said, I never have been a leggings girl -- that's a trend I've sat out almost entirely. You should absolutely feel free to choose what works for you! I suspect that next Spring, crop flares will be more mainstream, and we'll be able to shop them more easily in the stores. I don't know that they'll have the same longevity as skinnies did, but I'm sure mine will get worn this Summer.

Here's to fab pants in all shapes and sizes!

I've been struggling to find the right pair for a while now, too. I'm petite with proportionally short legs and I don't care that much about looking taller, but cropped flares tend to make me look short AND wide. So the solution ought to be straight crops... but I want a fancy released hem too, and finding petite-length released hem crops is a tall order. I will settle for a raw hem and flared crop if the fit is decent, since I lived in boyfriend jeans all of last summer and would like a new silhouette that's less warm than skinnies but still covered enough for indoor AC.

Roxanna I understand you completely. I sort of feel that way about full length flares - I love the look on others but find it too complicated to hem that to the exact length wear they work with multiple shoes yet don't get wet or dirty. Crops are more forgiving in that sense. I do think that straighter crops are easier and just as current fwiw.

In the interests of keeping an open mind, I tried on the BR kick flares (in 3 sizes, no less!)--and couldn't stop giggling each time I saw myself in the mirror. I'm sure Angie is right that there is a pair out there that would look fab when worn with the right top, shoes, and attitude, but I'm into "Onward" myself.

I'm another one with 2 pairs of the BR resin wash cropped kick flares at home trying to decide if I should keep. I like the look for some surprising reason because I'm like you and it usually takes me awhile to warm up to new styles. I ordered the "short" from their website be they came with a label of "petite". Very confusing. The rise is 8" for anyone interested. The size down looked better but is really tight in the thighs....which make them a little hot...but I run hot. Hot thighs....cold ankles.

Roxanna, there is a flared/straight crop for every body type (echoing what Lisa said). And once you have the right shoes - it ALL comes together. I bet you'll come round, since you even hinted at that yourself.

FWIW, I've had petite curvy pears in straight crops and they look fab.

Reading the responses in Suz thread I said to myself.. This seems like too much work...is it really worth the effort? I tried the BR Resin crops and decided in favor of the straighter Gap Girlfriends....cropped for my tall frame but not a fussy flare that just doesn't seem to look right on me. I loved the look on Sveta, Janet and others which made me go against my better judgement for my own style preferences ... I love the idea of of a fresh new jean style but I knew off the bat this wasn't going to work for me.

I totally understand how one might feel this way. I have short legs for my average height so it is not easy to get them quite right. However, jeans are the backbone of my wardrobe so having up-to-date cuts is very important to me, which is why I am willing to put in lots of effort and time to find a couple of suitable pairs in different washes.

I ordered one pair from BR in a size and length i think will work because i live in jeans and i want the refresher....but if these dont work, i will return and leave it at that. I am a bit worried now because i dont want to jump on a trend that is difficult to wear and style. I was planning on wearing these with a linen or cotton tee and blocky heel or wedge.

I think long-run I will probably wear the slim straight or skinny crops or rolled BFs more, but if I can get a flare that works I will do it! OTOH, if the BR or Gap versions don't work I'm not going to spend more time or money searching. I have one faded pair from BR already that do the trick. I can see why it might seem like way too much effort.

I like them! I guess I lucked out because the BR Resin Cropped Flare is the only pair I've tried this go around and they fit like a glove. I like them best with a heeled sandal (I'm a heels girl) but they also look fine with my blue suede booties. I wouldn't hesitate to throw them on with my SE Gigi Sandals when I'm being more casual.

I'm petite (5 feet) so I know they work on petites. Perhaps other body modifiers come into play. I'm curvy but fairly slim. I think the little flare actually balances out my hips......much like full length bootcuts do.

I had a pair of Talbots red cropped flares about 4 years ago. I remember the Talbots ladies were freaking out in reviews about the flare. I thought they were super cute and different.

I can totally understand - my eye has not adjusted either and other than the cropped cuffed jeans, I won't be sporting a cropped pant.

This is an interesting thread, Roxanna. The kick flare crop style at first looked strange to me and I could never imagine sporting it. I am very tall, so I was never particularly concerned about the "leg shortening" effect -- but it took me a while to get over the idea that these would look like "flood pants" on me. (I spent most of my childhood in jeans that were too short for my stature and took a lot of ribbing from my peers.) But, as I am one of those gals who practically lives in jeans, I am always looking for new silhouettes in order to expand my options. I tried out the look for the first time last Spring by hacking off a pair of too short bootcuts. I wore them exactly the way I would wear any other crop style jeans -- for me that means with flats, wedges, espadrilles or sandals. I must admit that I felt awkward the first few times I wore them. My eye took a while to adjust. It didn't help that my husband and friends (who are conservative, non-trend-following dressers) were giving me the stink eye. By the end of last Summer I had fully embraced the look. For me, they are so much cooler (temp wise) than more traditional skinny crops and less of a "pale-leg-bearing" nightmare than shorts or clamdiggers. I own four pairs now in different washes and colors and enjoy them. I even wore them into the Fall with booties or mid calf boots… which I think is a less stumpifying look for those who have that concern. And I really do not get overly analytical about finding the perfect length… I suppose I should, but it is just not something that enters my mind… so, like LisaP, I just put them on and wear them.

AndiB, so many styles are open to women who are 5'6" (versus 5'1")! For many styles, you don't have to be tall, but you can't be short. I am envious. Looking forward to seeing you in your crops!

Roxanna -- that's the thing: we CAN make the cropped flare work, but there are all these riders -- they can't be too wide, or too flared, they must be the perfect length, you can't wear them with flats, blah blah blah...

@Una - you are so right! Some forum members pull this look off with such aplomb, which makes me think i should give it a go, but somehow it will never look as effortless on me, i know.

@Lisap - I have embraced the crop pant, but its' the kick flare I can't get my head around. I think it's due to, as you said, the myriad of styles, widths and proportions out there - it just makes my head spin. Maybe, as you said, it's about not thinking about it too much!

Rachy - ha! Raining in our neck of the woods too, so i hear you. And Hello kitty! You kill me :)

Deb - glad I pointed you to a new source - can't wait to see how they work out!

AviaMariah - exactly. Don't love the look enough to spend the time on it.

Aziraphale - EXACTLY. We must be fashion mindset twins. I felt *exactly* the same way about loving bootcuts, taking a while to adjust to skinnies because everyone was wearing them with flats (which to me made my hips look huge), finally getting on board, and then being hit with a new style that, as you said, is extra-stumpifying. JFE on regular size people means not flattering enough on me (though I know Angie will say that anyone can wear any trend - it's all about the size, width, cut and proportions.)

AndiB - that sounds AWESOME. Love the choice of shoes. can't wait to see you style them!

I was in from the git-go, ordered a pair on line from Ann Taylor (linked through Un Femme) and the fit is perfect, the flare is fun. I'm not tall at just over 5'6" but certainly not petite, and I've been dying to style them. I've worn them once so far - still chilly in Michigan - and am loving them. Can't wait to wear them with my new doc martin brogues, platform kork-ease sandals, and I suppose my cons and adidas stan smiths. waiting for the latter, on back order. can. not. wait. for. warmer. weather.

I totally understand what you mean, Roxanna. When I first saw these, I thought, Oh yay, another style that will look stupid on me. It seems like this often happens -- clothes that are JFE on a normal-size woman just draw attention to my extreme shortness.

But I am all about the relaxed effortlessness of looser-fit pants, and the raw-hem cropped ones are up my alley style-wise. I'm always a sucker for loose fit. So I'm going to give it a go, even though I'll probably have to wear platforms so's not to look like a hobbit. :-)

One of the reasons, I think, that I initially had a bit of a negative reaction to the kick-flares is that I'm so used to full-length, slim, flattering jeans that actually make me look taller. So shorter, wider pants, by contrast, seem extra-stumpifying.

I remember last time around when full-length flares and bootcuts were trendy, in the early 2000s, and I was delighted with how long they made my legs look, especially paired with block heels or small platforms. And when skinnies came in, it took a while for my eye to adjust because they weren't as lengthening -- especially because, around these parts, people were wearing them with very flat sneakers. But adjust it did.

I do think that kick flares will have a relatively short half life, but straighter, slim crops will probably always be in style because they're more flattering.

I think I'm with you on this. I do plan on trying a few pairs on when I'm in a BM store. But if they don't work pretty quickly I'm not going to spend a bunch of time trying to get the proportions just right. I just don't have the time or patience. I guess I just like the look. If I was in love with it I might be willing to invest more.
