3 style - tops will be the toughest. Also they are my least favorite thing to buy. With jeans no problem. Belts are my thing. So a tucked sleeveless mock turtle or crew w a great embellished belt is my normal thing. With those scuba pants or leggings no belt loops and probably not great to tuck. Maybe a long enough top to cover the waistband but still relative cropped. Maybe even play against type w the zips and go black lace tank. Also a cropped buttoned waistcoat as top could work if I could find one. Not sure. I will pm you if I find something stellar though!!

Glad that you appreciate my feedback. I'm thinking aloud on this thread for myself too. I have a fairly similar blazer. Mine is somewhat shorter in the midsection though, which is a good thing for me, as I'm short waisted. I think that I would wear mine more if I had the zippers on the front pockets like yours. I think zippers makes it more edgy and less traditional blazer looking.

I've been in a bit of a style rut with mine. Just wearing them with traditional woolen straight leg medium width trousers and mostly with bright merino turtleneck or pullovers from BR.

I'm thinking that this is the year to mix things up for my style. I got some deep red and deep teal heavy warm fabric tapered leg full length trousers at the end of last winter, around March. I felt like it was my last chance to find something not cropped until late in the fall of 2017. Anyway, your post got me thinking that, for myself, I need to prioritize wearing the blazer with my colored pants this year, and I too might be in the market for additional tops to wear under the blazer. So, if you do purchase tops to go underneath, I would definitely be interested to see them. Thanks for sharing your experience.

That's a very interesting observation 3style, I never thought about the vibe being gear, especially with the "neoprene" material. I will definitely assess that with the try on. The blazer, at least, is a substantial fabric, more like crepe but stretchy so I don't think it gives a casual vibe. But that's an excellent point!! Thanks for chiming back in!!

Lifting and shaping sounds good to my ears. I have kind of a sporty vibe, so on me, I'd be afraid of a more simple pants style coming across like lululemon pants. But it all depends on how the whole picture comes together, and I am definitely generally in favor of simple pants for the longevity of wear relative to the trends factor.

I am thinking that it might be fun to find some ways to sometimes incorporate prominent zippers somewhere else in your outfit. Like perhaps in your footwear or in a handbag to wear with this jacket. You could even try a delicate knit sweater which has a half zip mock turtle neck to be worn under the blazer.

3style - thanks for the suggestion!! I had not seen those pants. Yes, the hardware on the scuba is tonal black on the zips and snaps, so I'm not sure the Ash pants would be a good companion. If you go to the enlarged photos on the scuba leggings and pants you will see there is a lot of seaming on the hip, front and back. I've never worn VB but her use of seaming and shaping reminds me strongly of David Meister dresses which are wonders of flattering architecture. They are deceptively simple because of the lack of embellishment but when you put one on, or see one on, wow, they create such flattering shape and are so comfortable to wear. I won't know till I get a pair on but I'm hoping that's where "my" wow factor will come from. But I see what attracts you to the Ash pants. So fun!!

Lovely jacket. I'm less excited about either pant option. I looked over what Nordstrom has from VB and I am enticed by the Ash Seamed Skinny Pants. I think that it would be kind of fun to go more maximal on the zippers and do four more zippers on the pants. However, on my screen the Ash pants seem like any ashy color : very dark gray though they are listed as black. So it might look like an odd mismatch. Also the zipper colors aren't the same, but again I think that it looks fun in a maximal sort of way.

Apologies for not linking. I have to figure out how to use the Finds feature. I'm thinking that I will be able to sort it out on my desktop computer when I am not in the middle of painting my hallways. And then hopefully it will be more apparent what to do on my phone.

Thank you suz!! It took me forever to find the "right" Smythe. Blazers are my thing. Angie was gobsmacked when I told her I had more blazers than tops. Everything else becomes a supporting player for me. So I spend most of my wardrobe budget on them with the plan that they will be with me a long, long time.

I agree the leggings look looser than the pants! I suppose it is the model's body types. Both very leggy but one a bit curvier. :)

Lisa and Sterling - that was my original thought. They are cropped though and I don't know the longevity of crops considering the length of time I keep clothes but are absolutely worth the try on. I live in leggings. I may try on both to see. But agreed the pants are probably the best "suit" option. Many thanks guys!!
ETA: these are the pants and leggings. Hard to tell, the fit does not look that different in the photos. That could be deceiving though. Because to my eye the leggings look more like the pants lol!!

Smittie - that's very beautiful but the material looks very heavy, hard to tell be reads a substantial tweed. It might only be a late fall or winter jacket if that were the case. I actually returned a smythe jacket very similiar to that but in black and white plaid because I did not think that weight of jacket had enough versatility. But the cut and look is gorgeous!! If you live in cold climate that could be an asset.

Style fan - thank you. I hope so. It's a lot to spend but when I try and find things that are less expensive alternatives I'm never happy with them. I guess it's best if buy what I really love as long as I stay with budget. Just have to wait on the pants but that's ok. Good things come to those who wait!!

Sterling - I'm still trying to describe the fabric. It's almost like the old Ann Taylor crepe but with more stretch. It does not feel like neoprene in a wet or spring suit. It's much more elegant. Very nice substantial hand, smooth but not shiny. Warm but not hot and breathable. Not occlusive. Sorry wish I was more articulate!!

It is so beautiful!!! Your description is perfect. I can actually see the jacket in my mind. I have trouble imagining the feel of the jacket, but if you say pajamas, I'm all in.

I think buying the extra pieces would be a really good for you.

Smittie - I have a really dressy smythe. It's black lace equestrian. I just put it with jeans. Well with pretty much anything. Chinos, jeans, as well as dresses and nice pants. It actually looked good with almost everything due to the cutaway silhouette.

ETA: smittie this is my smythe the lace corded blazer

Nice work! Sounds like you'll get a lot of wear out of it over many years. I definitely think it's worth it.

I really, really would like a nice blazer. I have tried the Smythe brand and they build up the shoulders and breast area a bit (use a lot of interfacing maybe?) and I must say, it looks Sharp!

But I need a way to dress it down and I haven't quite figured that part out yet.

Greyscale - than you. I'm still keeping my eye for rag and bone. And the sweater jacket is a very good idea. Just needs to be the right one.
Fashiontern- thanks so much for the good wishes. You really helped me have a clearer vision of my needs. All the sweaters you suggested were really lovely and I had to really cogitate on why they did not resonate. Sometimes figuring out what you don't want, makes figuring out what you do want easier. So thank you so much for your help!!

Fantastic! It sounds like a really valuable purchase.

Incidentally I saw the J Crew sweater blazer that I'd suggested, in person, and it's much more on the sweater side. Nice but not the same thing at all.
