Kimlee and Lisa - he is!
Rae - yes it is his choice and yes I don't think he has the capacity to study too many units while working full time and being involved with his family. (he is doing 1 unit now) He may want to cut down on his discetionary spending! We will need to have that talk, as we are not really very budgetary types, but have managed fine so far thanks to a low rent house, not being big spenders etc. We are not in any debt and have some savings.
He is doing this for reasons (that I support) related to our shared Christian faith and I am trying to hold on to Jesus' promise that if we put his desires first he will make sure we have what we need in the way of food and clothing!

I love hearing of sweet-hearted hubbies! Is hubs cutting his hours by choice? Perhaps he feels that 75% his current pay is enough to keep everyone happy, and that the extra 25% that would otherwise go to his extras or toward savings isn't worth the extra work, time away from you, and sanity. If it were me, I'd feel like my partner shouldn't have to give up anything to "pay" for my shorter hours.

We went thru a tough time 2 yrs ago when I needed to quit working (after 19 yrs at my then-current job) and it was 5 months before I was accepted onto Social Security Disability, so it was really hard getting by with one income. My DH was very kind about it, reminding me that we'd get thru it ok...but I just felt guilty about every purchase, even if it was needed!

Suz - that is a discussion we need to have! There is the possibility I could find a job return to work, but we won't pursue that above other priorities. We may have to just make a few adjustments and eat into our savings a bit. Our expenses are not too high compared to most.
It is nice that your DH supports your writing! I partially supported DH for about 5 years of study/ training - and now I haven't had a paid job myself for 5 years. He did say about a year or two ago that I was buying a lot of clothes but I have cut down a fair bit since then.
Taylor and Angie - I would have been happy to SYC - I guess I have a strong frugal/ ascetic streak! But it is sweet of DH to say I don't have to!

So...how are you going to manage it?

I have been in a similar situation, yes...my husband has been exceptionally generous with me, helping to support my writing. I make so little at this work and wish that my contributions to the family pot were larger. In the past I often would skimp on myself (particularly clothes) because of this. But as I have been buying new things, he has been most understanding and has even encouraged me to shop a bit. And he has not made a single nasty remark about the cost of things. He did initially question the winter coat I recently bought but when I suggested returning it he was adamant that I should keep it. Once he realized that it was a true need, he wanted me to have it.

He doesn't want to stint on buying the girls school uniform pieces to replace the holey ones either ( I was tempted to stretch it out until Feb, so DD5 will be eligible for an education tax refund!)

DH is cutting his hours down to 75% next year, to do more study, and I offered him to get by until July next year (the end of the Australian financial year) with no outlay on clothes except spending vouchers and buying summer sandals (my one true need, as I wear out a pair every summer). Also suggested I not renew my gym membership. Would have saved us about $1000AUD a year with those 2 things.
But - DH said no, I don't have to give these things up, and that he didn't ask me to cut corners.

Just as well, because I have since decided that my boots are not worth remending and now I can replace them next winter. Not to mention replacing a number of things that I bought in my first year on YLF (new jeans)

I hope his kindness is being responsible! I did think it rather sweet of him - Have you ever been in a similiar situation?
