I love winter and summer because you always know what you gonna get -yes, I'm no Forrest Gump, I don't like surprises that much-.

Summer: cute dress (and I have a few), cute sandals (I have a few of those, too), handbag (I only have one, it needs replacement and I'm not able to find a substitute).

Winter: Well-fitting coat (I have too many, and in different weights and shades), jeans/dress/skirt with cool tights, fantastic boots/booties (though I have a preference for tall boots). Cool cozy and colorful scarf (no gloves or hat, it's too mild for that)

Whereas Spring and Fall for me are:
- light jacket, but not too light in the morning and not too heavy to carry on your way back home at 12pm.
- Shoes: closed toe, slip-on shoes. With naylon socks, since otherwise my feet would blister. And then nylon makes my feet ache. So I end up wearing converse sneakers, which are cute but not the most stylish option for an everyday basis.
- Dresses and skirts? Hah, tights feel too wintery, but then, no tights is not doable because I can't wear closed shoes without socks/tights AND long sleeves + bare legs feel seasonally confused to me. So, I'll wear jeans every day.

Yeah, I get to play with my lighter scarves and I love my denim jacket but that's as much fun as it gets for me. Plus, that weather is stressful and the air conditioning in public spaces rather confusing.

I would positively freeze in 65-68 degrees. I need at LEAST 70 to keep me from shivering. Guess I am a freak too!

Oddly enough I find it much easier to be stylish with 12 layers on. I do wear skirts and hose though. I mean, it's not that much colder if you have a long coat and boots. No skin is exposed.

Summer just leaves me feeling bare and frustrated. I just can't figure out how to add any depth or interest to an outfit without overheating. I can't tell you how many times I put an outfit together and think "hey, this would look a lot better with a scarf/jacket/vest"...if only it weren't 90 degrees. But the oily skin and painful feet are by far the thing I hate most about summer dressing. I really need to dupe those Brulees. They saved my feet this summer.

I keep the house at 65-68. I turn it up to 70 first thing in the morning to warm it up. My kids are fine in short sleeves. It's not the house that's cold- it's me.

Khris, can I plead with you to turn up the heat in your home? You are already struggling with the cold- you deserve to be comfortable to the point of only needing a light sweater and slippers in your own home. You're worth it!

I live in an old, drafty house built in 1911, and I know how expensive it can get. But I found just a few degrees really makes a difference in comfort. And I no longer find my daughter and her friends walking around the house in blankets! Embarrassing!

Thanks VC. I think that I am just freakishly cold, and maybe I have a circulation problem. I should ask my doctor about that. It's been 5 winters here now, but the weight loss really messed with my ability to cope.
I already wear turtlenecks- my neck gets so cold, but I do need some thicker ones. My shoes won't fit with really thick socks (sans my engineer boots and the sherpa clogs that I wear as house slippers), but I found angora/wool blend lightweight socks that I have been wearing. Angora is 40 times warmer than wool, and these are even warmer than my thicker 75% wool socks, but still my feet sometimes get cold. I actually considered some electric warming socks that I saw, but they are way too expensive. Those stretchy gloves do nothing for me- the wind blows right through them. I wear leather fully lined gloves when I am outdoors for any period of time.
See- freakishly cold.
I got cold yeaterday at the park toward the end of the day (in my 5 layers). There was a group of firemen playing football- in shorts and tee shirts.

I had a tough time adjusting to the weird cold snaps we get here in Colorado. Way, way too cold for me. Um - not the most stylish option, but there's a point to me even bringing it up. My husband bought me some ultra-warm Kamik brand (inexpensive, but made for the cold) black suede snow boots one year. They are amazingly warm. The suede truly is water proof, and these are just above the ankle/not quite mid-calf) and work just fine under boot cut jeans and even some dress pants.

The point? Keeping your feet warm is *the* key to keeping warm in a colder climate that you're not quite used to yet. Don't laugh, but I wear these thick chenille socks under my other, thinner shoes/boots. No one sees them, but they act sort of like the ultra-warm fluffy stuff in those serious snow boots of mine. Most of my winter shoes and boots are a half size larger so as to accomodate my silly chenille socks, which are usually called "Slipper Socks" or something like that.

I also carry around all kinds of these really inexpensive knit gloves - they look like little kid gloves, and stretch to fit your hand. They don't take up any space in pockets, purse or what have you - and are usually just $2 per pair. I have red, blue, purple, green, black etc. Makes things a bit more 'fun'. You can get these in Walgreen's, the local grocery store or what have you. Going rate is around $1.99 pair. Don't dismiss these because they look so tiny - they stretch to fit your adult-sized hands.

Also - for some reason, when it gets really cold - any kind of open neckline is too chilly for me. Even a cowlneck isn't warm enough. This is why I go for a lot of turtlenecks, and I don't mean thin, drape-y ones either. The ones I get are slightly thicker, rib knit turtlenecks. Again, these might not be YLF-ish enough, but for the price and warmth, they work for me:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog.....d=11828108

In-store, you'll find teal, purple, green, ivory and so on.

Here are some examples of what I call 'little kid' gloves:

http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStor.....Gloves.jsp

http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStor.....Gloves.jsp

Because they're so inexpensive, I can get all kinds of colours.

Silly, but *warm* socks that no one sees under your fab caramel suede boots:

http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/.....tid=onfr1r

I'll buy black ones for under black boots/shoes, but if the boots are tall enough, then I might go for a goofy colour. :)

You need turtlenecks! Even if you get thin, drapey nicer-looking ones (eg. like the Edwardian style in the YLF store), these will go a long way to keeping you a lot warmer. I can't say enough about turtlenecks for winter weather! I don't have short hair either, it's about the same length as yours, but I just get too cold without a turtleneck when the temperatures drop.

I live in the mid-Atlantic: It gets cold, but not super super super cold (usually). I wear skirts/dresses with boots all winter long... sometimes with tights, sometimes not.

I LOVE wearing boots... they're my favorite footwear... so I always look forward to winter dressing for that reason. I don't do other winter accessories, though--no scarves or gloves, so I kinda miss out on that one.

I also hate sweaters... too much bulk! So I wear a lot of long-sleeve tees. It's easy to find them in colors, although I pretty much wear black all the time.

A necklace extender is a great idea- I don't know why that didn't occur to me.

You guys are so funny- dresses/skirts in the winter. I seriously don't know how you do that. My legs are not coming out of multiple layers until March. Yeah- I wear long johns or tights under my pants all winter long. Sometimes I wear a hat and coat indoors because I am so cold (and too cheap to keep the heat turned way up). We've already had snow here. I know it's not as cold as some places, but it does get cold. I've been stocking up on lightweight knits with some animal fiber, but I am worried that come the really cold weather they won't be enough. How many layers can one person wear? Tomorrow I will be outside for several hours and am planning on wearing thermals (top and bottom), knee high angora socks, jeans, a lightweight turtleneck, a lightweight angora blend sweater, suede boots, a pleather jacket, my wool coat and I am bringing suede gloves and a scarf just in case.

I know that I've said this before here- my area really sucks for second hand. The one good thrift shop that we had just went out of business. I do go look (because I love second hand shopping), but I rarely find anything. I've been trying to increase my brooch collection since we moved here 5 years ago and haven't found a single one yet. Same goes for vintage scarves.

I do read a bunch of style blogs, but nobody seems to blog about how to look stylish when you're wearing 12 layers. The other option is chunky knits- talk about looknig like the Michelin Man.

I like winter, but then again I'm in California, so we don't have the bundled-up-like-the-Michelin-man issue. I love the footwear (BOOTS!), layering, different textures, and rich, dark-hued colors--which are good for me since color-seasonwise, I'm winterish. Hm, I think that's one reason I find it hard coordinating in the summer because I don't like wearing light colors!

Khris, I love winter also & I'm huge on all accessories (not just jewelry). Some things I do & like:

~ Get a necklace extender. It's essential in the winter but once you have one you'll find you'll use it year-round. Sometimes I use 2 depending on what length I want on something. I've also snuck in a bracelet in the back of a necklace to use as an extender in a pinch on vacation (long hair or a collar would cover). This will help with bulkier sweaters & turtlenecks when you need more length.

~ I'm drawn to jewel toned & metal jewelry in the winter. I set my wood, natural stone & things like that aside for the summer months.

~ Do you have any thrift or consignment stores nearby that you could frequent occasionally? We have a ton in my area & I frequent regularly! AMAZING what you can pick up for $1 (brass bangle, vintage brooches, necklaces, etc. are a few I've picked up). That & BELTS - I get the majority of my belts at these places. They are typically $1.59 @ Goodwill by me locally. Purses are $2.99. Simply amazing what you can find. Try one in a very good area of town or an older more established area of town. Anytime we go on a trip I try to hit some in the area anymore.

~ The scarves others have mentioned - shop for the right one. You'll know it's you instantly. I am a solid color top girl so I opt for a little pattern in my scarves. Leopard, snake, floral, etc. Adds color, dimension, pattern. I instantly feel transformed!

~ Tights (alone same color as shoes, pop of color, layered under another pair like this - http://whatiwore2day.blogspot......-legs.html ), gloves, scarves, layering t's, cami's others have mentioned.

~ Brooches - oh how I love to change my look by adding a different brooch to my coat! Or, simply attach it to a few strands of pearls or your belt. Or, bunch some together like this --- http://whatiwore.tumblr.com/po.....y-of-light The possibilities are endless here!

~ Someone mentioned long necklaces being a problem - you can double it up so you have a shorter one. If it's a tad too short again use that extender.

~ Vests - you get another layer of warmth. Good bridging piece for me in Spring Fall but considering your climate might work good for you in the winter also!

Another idea - find some style blogs that you like & track a few daily. Amazing the ideas you can get. Especially if you are a visual person like me & can just scan photo's all the time!

Basic winter option for me - wool sox & wool sweaters/jackets when it's really cold. I have to have that & nothing else!! I love winter & the deep jewel tone's though!

If all else fails - some warm cocoa or hot tea & some good blogs like this to scan through & get inspiration!

Oh, I'm very much on team Winter. I love the fact that you can put together a wide variety of outfits in a given week; sometimes you can wear
a jacket or scarf, sometimes just knitwear is enough. There's scope to play with necklines, colours, textures and fabrics in a Toronto winter. Summertime
here I find more restrictive; when the humidity strikes, wear as little as decently possible. That gets old for me very fast. I also have a pretty good
coat collection that I love playing with, and I know I'll enjoy experimenting sith different boot styles once my budget allows me to purchase them.
This might be influenced by the fact that I despise excessive heat. I'd rather be too cold than too hot any day of the week, and humid summers wind my cranky-factor up to 11.

I LOVE Winter clothing, shoes and accessories. But then – I love dressing for all the seasons as long as I get to dress for them for equal periods of time throughout the year.

I would have a big problem living in a place that was hot most of the year. I would personally find that very boring. Autumn and Winter are my best. Summer is next, but Spring leaves me cold. Literally.

I much prefer autumn and winter to summer and spring clothes for the same reasons Kristen and Maya highlighted.

I love tights, cardigans, wool dresses and sweaters to the point that I miss them in the summer but now I'm not missing my summer dresses at all. Also, it's much easier for me to dress for winter and autumn as I just have more clothes for these seasons and the weather is a bit more predictable- wet and cold!

I love hats, scarves and gloves like Maya. In fact, I just bought a pair of purple armwarmers. My major problem with gloves lately is that I have a touchscreen phone and MP3 player and I hate removing my gloves every ten seconds!

Also I just love autumn and winter as I just tend to be mentally happier during these months as I'm in school and studying, rather than working in a minimum wage job, so this definitely reflects in my happier choices about my wardrobe.

Oooh, and I love the darker jewel colours that come out every autumn!

I agree with a few that summer seems more boring for me. The most I can stand to wear most days is shorts and a lightweight top- or a dress when I can find cute summer dresses that work for me.

Winter here is quite mild, so I don't' feel that I am living in a coat all winter. In fact, often I wish I could wear my coat more! I probably wear it less than half a dozen times all winter long! I am having tons of fun though layering with jackets and sweaters and pairing my dresses (all 2 of them with skinnies, leggings, or even my bootcut jeans.

Yes! Reasons:

1) I'm more limited to cardigans, instead of blazers (yes, some of my blazers will fit under my coat, but not all).

2) Dark shoes make more sense than colorful ones - less apt to get ruined in the muck

3) You sometimes feel like you are wearing the same outfit, because you may only have one or two coats. I actually have more than that, but I tend to stick to just a few day after day.

4) Static cling! It's unavoidable.

5) Sometimes you feel like the Michelin Man - all bundled up.

6) Hat head

7) When it's icy, heels make no sense.

Last year I found it helpful to switch up my scarves a lot. Especially since I often end up keeping them on indoors. This year, I invested in two new pairs of colorful leather gloves that coordinate with my coats. Haven't needed them yet, but I'm hoping that can add some interest.

I also much prefer fall and winter to summer and spring. I love spring weather but it usually leaves me with a sense of dread as far as getting dressed goes.

-Winter accessories are my favorite kind. I love scarves, hats, gloves, headwraps, and earmuffs.

-Layering. I struggle in the summer due to the lack of layering. Besides just being more visually interesting, it also camouflages better. In the summer, I feel exposed and it bugs me. Also, as someone who can never wear a flattering top without a camisole, I am never comfortable in the heat.

-My face gets disgustingly oily in the summer and my hair goes frizzy.

-Winter footwear is FAR superior. Boots, oxfords, booties, loafers...totally fab! And you can wear socks with them!

-I adore coats and don't mind my outfit being covered by them. I would get bored with just one coat though. I wish it would finally freeze so I could break out my Zara puffer.

-Jackets! So fabulous.

I really need to move to a cold climate.

i actually prefer fall and winter to summer -- i love being able to play with layers!

i think the lack of color is definitely a big part the problem. is there a way to mix in bright colors and play with textures and patterns? i also try to challenge myself to make warm weather clothing work for me in winter -- that means layering light dresses over turtlenecks, or wearing long sleeves and sweaters over skirts with tights (colored, if you want to go that way!), or... you get the idea! maybe that could be something you challenge yourself to do?

Kristen- I do think that is part of it. I have a couple of patterned tops/dresses that I can still make use of, but most of my warmer pieces are solids. Once the cold weather hits I mostly rely on texture for interest. If I could find some lighter weight, but warmer fiber patterned scarves that might help.

Ever since we moved here (5 years ago) I never have felt like my winter wardrobe is complete. This is the first time in my life that we have a true winter (even though it's mild compared to lots of places), and I really struggle with the cold. I'm actually better set this year on base layers- I have two sets of long john (top and bottom)- one lightweight silk and one heavier sport oriented, a pair of wool tights on the way, several long sleeved tees and turtlenecks, and warm but lightweight socks. Even still, I am worried about freezing all winter. It seems like I can never get warm enough. I'm sitting in my house right now with a tank, a cowl neck tunic, a wool blend cardi, silk long johns, cotton pants, angora/wool blend socks and converse on. It's 65 degrees, and I am already starting to get cold feet- I am switching to my sherpa slippers.
What pieces do you guys find essential to your winter wardrobe?

I partially agree with you, Kristen- I find both Winter and Summer infinitely more boring, style-wise, than the "in-between" seasons. Winter is too dark and drab and practical, and Summer is too hot to really have fun with.

Colour and accessories are key to not getting stuck in the winter doldrums. Fun scarves, gloves and bags- things that people will see when you've got your coat on. I also like to add brooches to my coat collar to liven things up a bit

I have to agree with Kristen- I find winter so much more interesting as far as style goes. All the layering, scarves, sweaters, jackets, boots... I love it!

Wait- Chris (that's chewyspaghetti, right?) I just realized this is the first winter in many years I've had fun dressing for the season. The only reason is I finally forced myself to buy some new layering pieces, cardigans and accessories. Okay, I'm probably not being entirely truthful there. To be honest, I had to practically put together a new wardrobe because I was in shlumpadumpa land. You are definitely not in that land, but I am wondering if maybe you need a few pieces to make things more interesting for you. With your wonderful new body, could it be that you just don't have your winter wardrobe complete yet?

Khris, I was just going to suggest trying some patterns in your winter items to shake things up! I noticed on your blog you have been wearing more solids lately. Maybe some patterned scarves or print blouses as layers might be enough?

With my dresses, I find I tend to reach for the patterned ones first, and even more so as it's getting colder. I like the challenge of finding new combos within my current closet that they can go with.

Louise I hadn't thought about it, but I think that I have the same issues with accessories. (and how did I not know that you have kids??) I still manage to wear a lot of necklaces, but I guess because my climate is a predominately summer season one, much of my jewelery seems more suited to the summer- shell and chunky stone, etc. I also find myself lacking lightweight enough scarves to wear indoors. I think that part of my issue is that I am drawn to a completely different look for wintertime. That's when I start craving vintage cameo jewelery and tweeds, but since our winter is so short I don't buy much.
Kristen that is so funny. Summer really is just a dress, a necklace and a pair of sandals for me. Maybe because the dresses don't have to go with anything else, I can get away with more interesting colors/prints.

MPJ- that is the same necklace that Marianna just got- and it looks great on her. I have a problem with necklaces in the winter because the short ones that I wear a lot in the warmer weather don't seem long enough to go over my winter tops.
