good points all! to add: the top is actually a slim-fitting base layer with a very loose over-piece. so the arms/shoulder/chest area is all slim fitting. the drape is almost like a scarf, but of unusual material. keeping the arms and shoulders slim-fitting in a recreation would be key, i'd think.

as others have stated, most of the fabric is very thin and drapey, so it doesn't add bulk. the over-drape, however, seems similar to sweatshirt fleece - and it's also front and center visually, so it creates the illusion that she's wearing much bulkier clothes than she actually is. wearing a cropped sweater or chunky scarf over drapey clothes in a monochromatic scheme would give a similar illusion.

the harem trousers hitting where they do helps keep the look from being overwhelming as well - you can see a lot of lean leg. the ribbing helps the pants seem longer, while showing the line of the leg. as others have pointed out, the shoes are key - heels, monochromatic, very edgy and trendy, and that tie around the ankles emphasizes how small hers are. in a recreation i'd go with whatever type of shoe silhouette makes your legs their longest and leanest.

i'm off to go check out your recreation - what a fun look to tackle! i love low contrast newts, and the casual/luxe combo is one of my faves! steph

I agree with all of you, of course! She is super slim, wears the right colors and has the right pose - but I still love the laid back vibe I get from this outfit.
You can't tell from this photo but she's wearing a long shirt and that drapy thing is actually a drapey knit vest (says so in the description in the catalog) - perhaps I'm really drawn to this vest?!

Loose on loose is very trendy right now. It looks fresh and modern, IMHO. Each piece in this outfit is slightly unusual and trendy (vs., say, an oversized track suit with baggy cropped pants paired with some sneakers) so the look is fresh and chic rather than sloppy.

Both the pants and shoes are low contrast and create a long leg line. I hate the baggy sweatshirt, I don't think it works at all. I think she looks like she's on her way to do domestic chores. I'd style this bottom with a boxy crop top, something fitted or tucked, a short blazer, or belted.

She's super slim, super tall and poses like a model. That's why it works. And even then, she would look way better with a more fitted top... I hate how they propose unflattering looks just because they don't know what to do with fashion anymore.

I think I'm just broadening on the general consensus. The model is very tall and slim; teaming her basic body shape with these earthy colours that suit her SO well, make the outfit look better than it would probably look on us mere mortals. It's also helped along by the fact that the pants has quite a lot of drape, so there is at least a definite hint of her (lean) contours. I'm definitely not the expert but I would think that soft fabrics with good drape (but not as soft and loose as to appear billowy) in darker colours would be figure friendly. And I think that high heels are a must. Go for it - I would like to see your interpretation!

Great observations from Michele! In addition, the outfit is monochromatic which elongates the vertical line.

Hi Lavinia,
I'll try and give you a little insight as to why this outfit works here and how to recreate in for real life. First, this model is obviously VERY thin with few, if any, curves. This means she can wear baggy/flowy clothing that visually can add pounds, with few ill effects. Her legs are quite long and thin as well. A couple of things you want to consider when wearing harem pants are that you want them to be flowy without creating bulk. Also, you never want the hemline or band to stop at the widest point of your calf. Here it looks like it might, but because she has unusually thin/long legs it works to her advantage. Let the band stop just under your knee at a more narrow point and see how it can both slim and elongate your legs. Be sure and choose colors that are good for you (they may be different than the ones shown). The heels worn with this oufit serve to elongate the legline.

If you can't pull off such a baggy top, try a fitted tee or tank with a slouchy jacket over it to show a little bit of your shape. Good luck!

Michele

Hey, guys!

I've been keeping up with you but didn't have the energy to post.
I've been browsing through a catalog and stumbled upon this outfit consisting of harem pants and loose top. I LOVE IT! But I don't understand why it works - it's against my instincts to pair loose items on top and on bottom but here it seems just perfect!
Any suggestions so I might try and recreate it myself?
