I don't think you look pregnant in this top, but I do think it may simply be too long for you - or at least, too long to wear over a skirt. How does it work over clamdiggers or skinny jeans? If I'm remembering correctly, you are petite, right? You may have better luck sticking only to petite empires. Proportions are key.

The color is lovely on you.

I would not give up on empire styles just yet - but do be very, very picky. I have a suspicion you can rock this look, with the right top. You want a band at the waist instead of gathers. Think of it like the equivalent of a full skirt versus an A-line skirt. You want more of an A-line to the bottom part of the top under the waist.

You have amazing collarbones, by the way!! I would love to see you in a sleeveless top. There is something about sleeveless + A-line/empire style that looks a lot better than the empire style with sleeves. I think the latter just adds to much volume all over, does that make sense? Whereas if you bare your arms then the volume below the waist looks more flirty. I could be wacked about this!

As for hiding the tummy, I like tops that have ruching on the sides, or can be scrunched up as if they were ruched. I also find anything with a pattern works great to fool the eye. And another favorite trick is to take a loose, shapeless top and put a cropped cardigan over it, buttoned at the waist, to create a waist. For summer you can make it a short-sleeve cardigan.

Thanks for the suggestions! Seems like stores are packed with empire tops... and they very rarely flatter me. Looks like an excuse for another shopping trip.

I suddenly remembered this post Angie wrote last year. This particular top probably isn't available anymore, but I love the cut and I'm sure something similar can be found in the shops at the moment:

I don't think this top looks unflattering, But I understand what you mean, some empire tops can do that to you;-)

Perhaps you could try a wrap or faux wrap top, or another kind of top with some ruching or shirring. Or a blousier (banded) top or a 'slouchier' type of top?

A few examples:

I can identify! I think its the gathers under the bust. I can't wear empire lines with fullness like that either. Do you have better luck with empire lines that fall smoothly to the hem?

Make sure the empire seamig hits under your bust, and try a shorter length at the bottom. You could also try a button down shirt with empire seaming. I bought some of those recently, and they work well for me. Maybe try an A-line swing type of tunic?

Hi, Bitsofpieces - how about trying a tunic top that doesn't have an empire waist? There are a bunch of suggestions in the "casual tunic" thread here:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....replies=15

Maybe a belted style would help define your waist. Perhaps others who know more can comment on that.

I need something to hide my tummy... and structured button-downs always seem stuffy to me. But I can't seem to find an empire waist top that doesn't make me look pregnant. Here's my most recent attempt: http://bitsofpieces.wordpress......-preggers/
