Simple things are always difficult for me also. I am picking about the fabric, colour and fit. Uniqlo looks good from the pics but when I was in the store I realized the fit was not for me. It might work for you. Everlane is great for simple cuts. Not sure what the fit is though.

I may open that store with TG.

Yeah, nice basics can be really tough. I am holding on for dear life to my white tee from BR from five years ago maybe? Thick, substantial fabric (not see-through at all), flattering cut, great length, just great all around. They don't make them like that anymore. Although Madewell might have some nice ones. I bought a striped tee from Madewell this past spring that was a suprisingly substantial fabric and was not see-through (it was white with black stripes).

You could maybe try Express for the type of shirt you're describing...though I'm not sure they have navy.

I do agree and TG I think your shop has a future..... Although Uniqlo is a bit like that?

At various times the things I have found really hard to find

- denim shorts that are not too short, not too long and not too tight
- white tees that have a tailored fit but are not body con and not see through
- racer bank tanks that have a tailored fit but are not body con
- 100% cotton popover lightweight shirts

I can't help with the navy shirt sorry but I share your frustration!

How about getting something made to order? Do you have a good dressmaker in your town? Or can you sew?

I share your frustration with trying to find just the right thing. I recently made a fairly rare trip to a nearby mall and couldn’t even find anything worth trying on. The Nordstrom store there was the weirdest Nordstrom I’ve ever seen - more like a rundown Macy’s. (The actual Macy’s there looked and felt like a Walmart.)

My joke has always been I should open the "simple shop" ... it would only carry non-see-through white t-shirt, white button ups, and black socks. I'll have to add a simple navy blouse to my fantasy inventory!

It IS amazing how hard simple things are - I think it's in part because simple pieces that are not well-made really show their flaws ... and also, since they don't go out of style quickly, they don't feed the fast fashion beast. Good luck in your hunt!

No great examples, but I sympathize. I have a bad tendency to buy random ( nice) tops and not focus on the hunt for a very specific style, length. Then it is hard for me to cull “ nice” items to keep wardrobe size in check.

These are the Wit and Wisdom pants I mentioned: https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/w.....sive-regul

On my body, they help with the lower tummy without creating a muffin. I really like how they fit at the hip. I really feel great in them, and feeling great is wonderful.

I have them in mushroom, which is more like a bronze with a green undertone, and this is nice because I have several black tops and blouses to put with them (see above, lol) and they would also look nice with navy, see lament also above. The fabric is a nice twill with no wear or distressing so it reads slightly dressier than just a colored jean. The 6P is a good fit on me. (For the purposes of comparison, I have to size down to a 2P in NYDJ which seems to run crazy large, but am a reliable 6P in Ann Taylor regular, or a 4P in their Curvy fit.)

I also have the side zip ones in a navy and black plaid (that color isn't available but the same pant is available in a black plaid) I got in the NAS, and I love them too. https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/w.....tite-nords

I tried and sent back the ponte ones--too legging-like for my current needs.

It seems like basics can be hard to find. I will admit that I don't usually hold out for 10/10. Perfect is just too difficult a standard for some items. If something is 8/10 and hits the important points, I'll stop looking. I don't enjoy shopping all that much so don't have a lot of patience to endlessly search for something.

KikiG - You are not alone! I think most of us find those hardworking essentials the hardest to replace too. I had to laugh at the "mullet of fashion" because that is so true!
I really hope other forum members can suggest some good options for your navy shirt hunt. Well done on holding out for the 10/10 rather than settling for a lesser option. I know whenever I settle, I live to regret it.

All I want right now is a cute, nice fitting, fluid, solid navy blouse with sleeves that can be worn out or tucked in, in a "dressy" looking, washable fabric, probably polyester. Not keen on rayon, not excited by "mixed media" which usually seems to mean it is nicer in front than in the back, the mullet of fashion.

I interviewed 8 black sweaters to get two that are adequate, and I'm wearing them a lot, because they are so useful. My fear is that the fabrication isn't wonderful, and I'll get to do the same thing again next year because of pilling. (My other fear is that Nordstroms will ban me for too many returns, but you all set my mind at rest on that fear.)

I am so frustrated by wanting to fill holes, but not wanting to settle for "adequate." I really try to apply the standard, like Angie seems to, that it is either a clear 10/10, or it is a zero, and to hold out for the 10, but that is a hard position to sustain in my closet at 6:20 AM trying to create a credible outfit to go to work in.

My current happy spots are my Ecco Soft 7 sneakers, and the delightful fit and tummy magic of the Nordstroms Wit and Wisdom pants.
