Sign me up for that thrift trip too. I've been trying to treat thrifting like any olther shopping, sticking to my persona and trying not to duplicate items. I do a lot more browsing than shopping but when something follows me home it's something really good.

Yup - such is the issue with thrifting. It's so easy to 1) forget what you bought; 2) buy WAY too much of it!

Suz, 1) you should totally come visit and thrift and 2), you may be right - maybe everyone else is like me and seduced by the turtlenecks and cords and then donates them barely used when they realize that they don't really need more than one or two pairs, and the same with heavier coats, so they all end up in the thrift store in great shape. Winter here is definitely not the same as winter other places, but we have a lot of damp cold and it depends a lot on where you are precisely.

Until I moved here I didn't understand why jean jackets were so popular - in Indiana, it's either hot and it stays hot at night, or it's cold and you want something more than one layer of denim. Then I realized that in the west it gets cold in the mornings and at night even in the summer and a medium-weight layer is really handy.

My sis-in-law is allergic to wool and I used to buy her non-wool sweaters a lot - cotton, acrylic blends, whatever - because you can buy them here nearly year-round but back in the midwest it's all wool and wool blends in the colder months.

Mrs E, my DH is one of those guys that runs warm - the heaviest coat he ever wears around here is a lightweight fleece, and that's only for midwinter. Usually he's in shirtsleeves and he doesn't even wear long sleeved shirts. I think we'd have to move to the Yukon for him to wear a sweater.

Claire, I'm trying to get better (i.e. less guilty) about thrifting something, wearing it only a few times, and then donating it back again. I used to feel really bad about it but sometimes you find something that fits your need better, or sometimes you just had an impulse that was a little off. At least with thrifting I haven't invested too much $$ - I've spent more money on stupider things, sadly!

aw, Suz, you crack me up!

but, as has been said, seriously - a winter coat from California ain't nuthin like a winter coat in Minnesota (as one example). i've heard from many friends from cold climates (idaho, upstate NY) that you can't even find a warm enough coat here in CA - we just don't need the warmth.

And some of these friends are guys who wear nothing but tees, sweats, and shorts. In other words, it must be a blatant difference for them to notice! at the same time, by all reports our couch is super comfy........ steph

And I really, really need to come to Phoenix or California to do some serious thrifting!! Just think of the bonus for somebody like me whose dominant season is fall/winter! Wow, I can only imagine.

But can you just see Mark's face?

"You WHAT? You booked a trip to Pheonix to go THRIFT SHOPPING???"

But you know....I've never been there. I'd love to see that part of the world.

Hmmm......

Um, yes, this is a problem for me too, even though my coats were in the hall closet and I could see them accumulating! Somehow I managed to thrift four coats/jackets over the summer (and I live in Phoenix). They are very hard to pass up at $1 to $4. After nailing down my style a bit more I took a good, hard look at them and consigned three. At least the consignment stores are taking fall/winter clothes now, but I still didn't break even.

Then yesterday was 50% off at Goodwill and I came home with a black pea coat from NYC&Co. I don't even want a black pea coat! So after lunch I took it back to a different Goodwill and found some great sandals and a summer skirt instead. Now that's more like it. I don't know what kind of selection the thrift stores have in NoCal, but a lot of fall/winter clothes in really good condition wind up in ours, because our winters are so mild and short (people must get excited for fall and buy them and then never wear them). After spending most of my life in the Northeast, I know their value (if you live in a cold climate) and I keep getting sucked into buying them. I really, really need to stick to my list when thrifting.

I hear you, Laura! I switched out some things today, and I have to admit I'm a little alarmed at the size of my jacket collection. But as I look at each one, I can't see parting with any of them! I'll just have to be diligent about wearing them all.

This is where keeping everything in one closet is helpful! You always know what you have (she says as 1/3 of her wardrobe is left behind in Tahoe lol.)

Oh, I am totally in love with blazers right now. I got a couple striped ponte ones in the end-of-summer sales, one gray tipped in black from Target i'm still debating whether I should keep, and then the other day I picked up two nice wool lined jackets - one black and white tweedy, one teal - for $8 each. How can you say no to that?

OK, so all this seasonal swap-out conversation has gotten me inspired. I've been collecting the summer stuff and pulled out the fall things. The problem: when you thrift you often buy out of season, and I usually just wash the item and toss it on top of the out-of-season clothes bin. And now I have a *$%load of fall and winter stuff and not enough room to store it, or the summer stuff that needs to go away somewhere.

And, while I'm going through the bins, why do I have so many winter clothes? I live in Northern California, not Northern Minnesota, do I really need so many sweaters and cords? I think I may have a problem.
