This is technically our final week of Whole 30, though I am here to report we did more of a "flexible Whole 30" this time around. We already knew there weren't any single foods that dramatically affect either of us, so we didn't worry about utter purity. We once had pasta, we once had rice, last night I had tofu.

One thing we didn't flex on at all was sugar. No sweets other than small amounts of fruit., and no added sweeteners of any sort. Extremely easy for me since I don't crave sweets.

Week One of our Whole 30 comes to a close.

Mr. April is utterly delighted with the meals we've had so far, but of course he adds a piece of grilled salmon or chicken to just about everything so he's less affected by the restrictions.

I have enjoyed the food too but man, this is one time-consuming project for the cook in the family.

Joyce B - the cheese part is hard for me too. I have a sister who eats vegan, so I'm used to finding work-arounds and that makes it a bit easier.

I wish you all the best. We have gone from vegetarian (20 plus years) to plant-based (last 6 months). I wondered how someone who didn't eat meat would do the Whole 30 but it sounds like your naturopath figured out a way.

I did it in 2016, and it was tough going at times, staying with it! But totally worth it. I learned that dairy is what really triggers heavy periods and terrible cramping I'd been dealing with monthly since I was 14. And that lentils make me feel sluggish and 'not right' somehow.us - just exhausted.

Different food groups affect different people in different ways, and I think Whole 30 is a great way to figure out what foods work for your body, and what foods adversely affect your health.

NM - yes, those gums are prohibited as well. It's wonderful that you learned something important for your husband's condition!

I don't eat any fish, chicken, or meats and am not fond of eggs, but the naturopath developed a version of Whole 30 that includes legumes. So my Whole 30 is both broader and way more narrow than the classic one (which allows as much meat/poultry/fish/eggs as you like).

Ok, time to stop complaining and start chopping. :)

We did a similar detox diet to try to manage DH's ulcerative colitis. He had the same restrictions, but it included no gums (xanthan gum, guar gum), no caraggennan, and no starches. While it was difficult to re-train the way you eat (and shop and cook!), we gained really great insight on foods that aggravated his symptoms. He was able to get completely off of the steroids and has had only one flare up in seven years, all thanks to the dietary changes.

I wish you lots of luck and support!

No great advice but wishing you success on your Whole 30 journey!

The only thing I can offer is that, as we've moved plant-forward (obviously not the same, but a dietary shift nonetheless), we've found that a surprisingly large number of recipes are easy enough to substitute appropriate ingredients into ... it may be helpful to think in terms of modified favourites rather than trying to implement an entirely new repertoire of recipes all at once. Liberal repeats may also be helpful! And if it's allowed, lots of delicious types of herbal tea to distract from cravings!

Keep us posted!

In fall 2018, the naturopath I work with suggested that DH and I do a "Whole 30". I hadn't heard of it, and if you haven't either, there's a ton of information online. Basically it's a 30-day dietary reset that helps you figure out if certain foods are causing problems for you.

Now we're getting ready to do it again.

The rules: No dairy. No sweeteners of any kind except fruits. No soy in any form. No grain products of any kind. No alcohol. Nothing containing anything artificial. And if you slip and have a piece of cheese, the 30 days starts over again.

So here we go. Anyone who wants to talk Whole 30, please chime in.
