And then I remember very specific outfits--my first day of 9th grade, a sleeveless, red, sailor collar jumpsuit with a white belt. I remember it being very important that my fashion choices reflected my taste in music, and was heavily influenced by britpop - low waist bootcut jeans (Levis 555) and what we called grandpa trousers (polyester dress trousers worn low on the hips), crop tops and baby tees (with bellybutton piercing naturally), Adidas tracksuit tops, anoraks, suede Gazelles or Pumas. Later I got into more 60's/70's folk rock, and wore a lot of bell bottoms and sailor trousers with cropped knitwear, embroidered pieces, etc. Not all the way boho, but definitely leaning that way. My hair was always long, and I didn't wear a lot of makeup. I loved thrifting, and wore things from my parents' (and grandparents') closet, and did lots of fashion diy's - like adding different colored denim panels in the sides of my jeans to make flares. Not by peer group nor by fashion. My best friends (still among my closest friends to this day) and I were not part of the cliques, but we were sort of adjacent to all of the groups — we got along with the preps, the jocks, the brains, the burnouts, the artsy types… so we got to go to all the parties basically. LOL Our environment (relatively affluent suburb of an east coast city) and the era was super preppy, and I certainly dressed with elements of that, but I didn’t like going too far in that direction. I wasn’t into punk music yet — that came with college, and even then my personal style was not punk. A little hint of it here and there but not much more. I had pretty professional public-facing jobs as a teen (receptionist in a real estate office, cashier in a nice furniture store), so I never got too daring with my looks. I’ll never forget that the first time some friends took me to a notorious local bar where all the punk and alternative scenesters hung out (John Waters was a regular), I was wearing purple palm tree shorts and a white tee. Kinda stood out among the black leather, LOL. </p> <p>I still like a lot of the things I liked back then. Cobalt blue, burgundy, leather jackets, bootcut jeans… I could happily replicate some of my outfits from back then in a way that would suit me now. This was 1980-82 (our high school was just 3 grades) so it was all about designer jeans and spike heels. If you didn't come by "preppy" naturally, you could wear it as a fad. My view of preppy then was that it was the most unflattering style ever created. Not at all appealing to boys, which, I'm not pleased to say, was the main goal of most of us.</p> <p>70s style was fading and "aerobic dance" - we pronounced it "arabic" - style was hot; just look up the Olivia Newton John video for Physical. Lots of makeup. Most of what I got was from cheaper department stores, and sometimes catalogs that came to my mom. I had my hair permed, shoulder length and flipped a la Farrah Fawcett style and I used Sun-in for some beachy streaks of colour. Relatively classic, relatively mainstream, relatively minimal/simple. I also wore a uniform so had a very small collection of "civvies" ... Probably two to three outfits max I would say? Explains a lot about me doesn't it lol!</p> <p>What I was super into was makeup ... From the colourful 80s to the berry lips and brown tones of the 90s and then the return to colour of the early 00s, I loved it all and evolved my makeup style to the trends. That part of my style has simplified considerably. My hair too ... I was always cutting it, growing itz cutting bangs, dying it black or auburn. I was definitely boho hippie the first time around. Sweeping bell bottoms, maxi coats, ethnic everything. Bodysuits were new, and very bright and tight. Combined with my dad’s old military pants and quite sturdy shoes. We had very few clothes and maybe three pair of footwear so not part of the pricey preppy crowd and not much wardrobe variation, but I still really like that sort of thing and there is a nod to it in most of my outfits.&nbsp;<br />Thanks, Carol! </p>
