I wear them with skinny jeans and any sort of top or with leggings and a tunic. I haven't worn them yet with a dress, because I don't usually wear mini-dresses. Under a dress or skirt that hit the knee, they looked kind of like leather leggings. They were flat, and had almond or pointed toes. I loved them for their warmth on cold winter days. They were a bit rumpled looking due to being a little bigger around the leg than I needed, and after 2 years of hard winter wear were done in. It was an inexpensive experiment - they were faux, but one of the nicest faux leathers I had ever seen. I've got your standard black riding boot now. I don't really like boots, but they are a winter necessity. Now, that would be easier with the boots that Anna just posted than with boots that have a higher piece in the front that comes just barely over the kneecap. But even so, I would say that either approach would work. They look more pirate-y, and just plain costume-y when they than have heels than when they're flat, and the flat heel works better with the more sporty look I like best. I like the flat ones with short skirts and tights, or jeans and leggings, worn with turtlenecks and crewnecks, simple sweaters with no details. I especially like them on women with short hair, there's a kind of Peter Pan androgyny to the look that is neither tough nor hard looking. I have usually worn them as knee highs with the part that goes over the knee tucked down inside. That also helps fill up the gap between the boot and my leg. I am considering having them shortened. They were the precursor to the 5050 with all leather and only an elastic gusset at the top of the posterior aspect. Mine are still going fine. I also have black suede cheap ones (Chinese Laundry), but they don't stay up as well, and have a tendency to slouch a bit. But good for a different vibe. I want another different pair, but most I've seen only have 13-14" calves, which won't work for me. Eg the Stewart Weitzman Lowland in tan or olive. K. Period, What are those tan suede ones? I needed some new tall black boots (really!) and decided to try the OTKs for a change. I almost posted asking the same question! I have worn mine so far with dresses that end just above the boots. I also plan to wear them with 2 asymmetrical hemline dresses (one side of the dress lands above the boot and the other below). I do feel like I need leggings or tights to cover the gap. I have also tried them out with (but not yet worn them with) skinny black pants. I like this look with longish loose layers on top. I am confident I will wear them that way. I am not sure whether I will wear them with jeans. I still prefer booties with jeans. They are very comfy and a bit of a change from knee highs. But to be honest I still feel like I want some knee highs too for longer skirts. It would work with a butt vest too, I think! ETA: if you look at the burgundy coat in the photo I posted up above, that coat is a little longer than mid-thigh on me.  I think a dress of that length would be fine.
