Angie, good advice.

Thanks Sterling, yes that Karen Kane was a perfect holiday top.

Thanks Firecracker!

LaP yeah a statement necklace is a good idea. I don't have many but I should try out what I have. Good suggestion for a fall topper, and you hit it right with "depending how much you want to keep the sweater". I do like it, should at least give it a chance.

Suz, the pumpkin topper would be the WORST possible one to wear over that black top, because the topper/coat sleeves are a heavy knit fabric with no lining. Trying to get the knit sleeve ruffle into another knit sleeve would drive me bonkers! That being said, never say never, next fall I should give it a try if I still have the sweater.

What LaPed said! :)

Also, question -- would that black sweater work with your pumpkin topper? Have you tried?

I laughed out loud at your title. "You're not the boss of ME!!" (But usually my fancy sleeves do boss me, alas, which is why I'm pretty much giving up on the darn things!)

So interesting to read your analysis. Just perusing the Finds, I would have picked the black sweater as the *easiest* to wear! But if black is not a year-round colour for you, then I can see why it would be tricky. I like the colorful scarf and denim vest ideas (heck, you could even do both at once). I also think that it would make a beautiful backdrop for a statement necklace -- so maybe if you have an orphan necklace it would be worth trying with the black sweater.

The other option might be keeping it as a fall/winter piece and adding "topper with wide/loose sleeves" to your wishlist. Depends how much you want to keep the black sweater, I guess.

torontogirl, yes that's a great idea! I don't see many options online or in stores right now for sleeveless denim vests but perhaps I will.

Bijou, yes you are right about how to manage these types of sleeves. The ruffle is too voluminous to stretch it down and pull the topper sleeve over it. I found I had to fold it up (tucking it inside the rest of the sleeve worked best) to get a topper sleeve over it, and it was too bulky once I got the topper sleeve on. Just not interested in this much hassle! Black and white is a great idea, I'll give that a whirl.

Cardiff Girl hmm..I will consider a longer gilet style topper, maybe that's worth a look, although it's a bit dressy for my lifestyle.

Chris, I love your velvet top and am so glad that that one is a winner for you. I agree that the white top, being such a lovely and airy summer top, is unlikely to require a topper, so you should be the boss of that one.

The black sweater is more tricky. With tops like this, I tend to hold onto the sleeve as I put my arm in and let go once I get to where the sleeve is sitting correctly. This can be tricky with 3/4 sleeves, because you sort of have to stretch the sleeve in the "hanging on" part. I do like the idea of adding a brighter scarf or patterned bottom to make the sweater look more "spring like". I love graphic black and white, so I would be likely to wear this sweater with white jeans, and then accessories in black and white or a bright colour.

Torontogirl good ideas for a scarf or necklace. the only vests I own are fleece and puffer so not springy either. The idea of a denim vest has kind of intrigued me....

Chris, what about a scarf or statement necklace in a color you feel is more flattering, to counter-act the black? Or perhaps a vest instead of a jacket as topper? White/light bottoms might also help up the 'spring' vibe. It's such a nice sweater, I hope you find a way to be the boss!

I have three tops with Maximal sleeves, and have ordered a fourth. The bossing contest has had different results with each one. 1) velvet floral top; 2) chambray blouse; 3) black cotton knit

The velvet top has wide bell sleeves that hit just at the wrist bone. I've only worn it once, to a holiday party last December. The sleeves are thin and drapey so I had no problem fitting them under a topper. I actually had to add a fitted sweater under my coat because the blouse sleeves provided no warmth and the coat sleeves were not snug so the cold went right up my arm. It was surprisingly easy to navigate the food buffet once I got the hang of it. Not bossy at all.

The blue blouse has no problems fitting under topper sleeves because it's only a little bit blousey. However, the second time I wore it, out to dinner with friends, one of the ties fell into my coffee! Boy did I feel silly. It washed out fine but I decided to alter the ties, to basically shorten them. They were shaped like a human eye (oval with points at each end), and I altered them to be more like a man's bow tie, and much shorter in length. I haven't worn it yet in the new configuration. Bossy but I think I have won the bossing contest. The photo shoes the ties after alterations.

The black sweater (from LOFT) has cuffs in the same mid-weight knit as the body of the sweater, but they don't get in the way. The problem is that getting it into topper sleeves is a LOT of work so I haven't worn in much. I find poncho type garments way too fussy so that's not an option. I wear black a lot less than I used to for every day and it does not seem like a spring/summer color to me, so wearing it without a topper doesn't work well either. I'm going to play with outfit creation to see if I can come up with something that would work for spring, like wearing it with light wash jeans and black footwear, maybe a light scarf, but I'm very skeptical. A denim vest (like a sleeveless denim jacket) might work too but I don't own one. It's still bossing me around.

I've ordered the white blouse, which I expect to be a spring/summer item that won't need a topper. Expecting to be the boss.

As the eldest daughter and second-to-eldest sibling from a large family and someone who was in management roles for more than half of my career, I have generally mastered the concept of "bossing someone or something around" but I would love some bossing advice on the black sweater !!
