I think when you get your own line of home furnishings, you can call yourself a supermodel.

Yep. They were an historic phase. Their faces will be icons in 20. Well may be not Helena Christianson because she didn't play the game quite so brazenly as some one like Naomi Campbell. For mine, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista were standouts. Mmm actually, they were all gorgeous.

Perhaps the term for the current crop of faces and bods is up for grabs.
What about: the Green Models: disposable,
The Dandelions?
Lambs to the slaughter?
Oompahloompas?
Someone's poor unsuspecting skinny, gawky daughter who has withstood so much time feeling like an ugly duckling that her low self esteem can be exploited..........too long.? GOP perspective.

Yeah, I think it has become harder to become a supermodel these days, what with all the bazillions of models and actresses and singers that end up on all the bazillions of blogs and magazines and commercials. Kind of like reality "stars" and how they aren't really stars anymore because there are so many shows and channels. The last real supermodel in my mind was Tayra Banks... an argument could be made for Chanel Iman or Agyness Deyn, since they are popular, but I don't think they are quite 100% part of pop culture the way Cindy Crawford et al are.

I just read something about how the supermodel thing has really been nipped in the bud. Did someone here direct me to it?

In any case, that kinda means there are no new supermodels... and the existing ones are old.

The pace is much faster. The marketing world more savage and fame more fleeting. Old 'models' of fame are just that. The term SM was coined, I think, for the pack we know and love. That's it. Am I just a grumpy old purist?

My definition of a "supermodel" has always been that laypeople - people outside of the industry - know their names. Becoming one is far more difficult now, as normally celebrities from movies or television are on the covers of magazines instead of actual models.

I think that the term is over used. I am not sure what it means anymore. Every model seems to be a super model or on her way to becoming one. I am not sure who is one today. Rosie Huntington gets mention a lot as does Kate Upton.

I would definitely say that Iman, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington are still supermodels.

I think I mostly think of the models who have graced the covers of the big magazines, Harpers Bazar, Vogue, Vanity Fair plus the component of being an icon for someone like Chanel, like Claudia Shiffer etc

Today every model who has been photographed a few times in Page 3 parties is often referred to as supermodel either by themselves or by some sections of media. It would be interesting to know when a model can actually be referred to as a supermodel. Is it based on how many popular models she/he models for on press or television ? Or is it a title given to showstoppers at Fashion Weeks? But then today the showstopper is often a film star /television star, a celebrity in their own light, adding extra star value to a fashion show. Then would it be safe to say that a supermodel is someone chosen to be the face of a luxury or high fashion brand ? I remember the term supermodel was first used for divas like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, decades back. I think a supermodel is someone who has become a style icon with a big fan following for their distinctive sense of style, irrespective of which brands they model for. What do you think ?
