As an alternative to plaid, what about seersucker? Banana republic has really cute blue & white striped seersucker walking shorts right now (yes, I bought them myself). Will go good with tops in navy blue, white, or this season's yellow:

http://www.bananarepublic.com/.....pid=569554

I think these may also now come in white!!

Otherwise, if you can afford a splurge, Bloomie's has a brand called Vince and I am debating about going back to purchase a pair of white walk shorts I have now tried on twice. But they are definetly a splurge!

Patience, I think the madras plaid shorts are fine for a tiny person with a preppy style. I am neither tiny nor preppy. One of my good friend's is a size 2 and is the preppiest person I know. She has a pair of similar shorts and she looks adorable in them. (She's 40). They are great for her, I'd look like a fat clown in them.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will definitely try jcrew and express. Angie, I was in Nordstrom and I didn't see any white walk shorts. Did I miss something? I'm looking for something crisp that hits at the bottom of the knee (I'm willing to hem.) I did find some cotton/linen white pants at Ann Taylor that I am really tempted by but I think shorts would be more practical for me. Is it a bad idea to have pants hemmed to the knee? These are wide leg so I'm doubtful it would work. On the other hand, every summer I do the search for white shorts and it is painful. I'm really trying to get away from searching for that particular item because I usually end up settling for something that's okay when I probably could have spent the money on something completely different that was completely fab.

P.S. Do you really think the jcrew madras shorts are too wild (for a 32-year-old)? I actually bought them but I haven't worn them yet (not hording just haven't worn shorts this season yet). I'm actually more of a solid color gal myself but these caught my eye to wear with a casual white blousie top. (I thought they were more patchwork than plaid too but I guess there's really not much difference.) Plus the fit was so much better than the standard jcrew chino bermuda.

Hmm....Express carries something they call "City Shorts" which are a made from proper trouser material, but are knee length. They usually will offer some kind of plaid. You might try there.

Ha! Yeah, I think you can rest assured THOSE shorts won't find their way into my closet.

I am having a hard time finding what I'm looking for though. There are plenty of subtle plaid shorts in the junior department though.

I like plaid shorts, personally. They can add a lot of interest to an outfit. As long as you stay away from these, I think you'll be fine:

What do you guys think of subtle plaid walking shorts? My family and I rode our bikes to the park today and there was a young girl (much younger than me) in a pair of plaid walking shorts. I asked my husband what he thought of them, and he said "her butt is too big to be wearing plaid". (But I think the problem was they were a size too small.)

Anyway, I think I'm going to try on a pair and see how they work with my shape.

Last year I bought those white cotton twill Express ones and I like them a lot.
They have no front pockets, just back slit ones that show trough very little.
I am not sure if they'll have the same ones this year, but it's worth a try!

I just bought a pocketless version at J. Crew at the Domain last night. They cost $68.00. This is the best pair I have found. It's not their bermuda shorts--these that I bought are more refined and dressy, and would be appropriate for work. Since they have no front pockets, there is no show-through (nude undies are a must, though), and they have a very simple, clean look. They come in black and geranium as well (bright reddish pink). I am keeping my eye on the geranium ones.

Also, try Express. They have some "City Shorts" (knee length dress shorts) that come in white. Not sure of your size, but they only go up to to size 12 in all their pants (just FYI). They are cotton twill and heavier, so I didn't notice any major show through of pockets. I'm going back today to try them on. The J. Crew were more of a "summer weight."

I'm in the market for a second, really fabulously fitting pair, so I'll post if I find any as well.

My fav’s are J Crew and Nordstrom at this point. Wait a wee while if you can and if these disappoint. This item is going to be available everywhere in a week or so.
