I wore my long strand of "pearls" today and thought they looked cute. If you like them, wear them with confidence!

Since it does have sentimental value and you've had it so long, I think it would be nice if you could do something with it. What about having it restrung but with colored string? I have a white beaded necklace from AT that is strung with red, so that is what you see between the beads. I love it. You could try red, black brown, kelly green...something that could work in your wardrobe.

I also second the idea of restyling it into something you would feel confident wearing more often.

Thanks, Marlene. Those are good ideas. I'm meeting with person who does jewelry and now I have a starting point to talk to her about how to re-style it.

I would want to restyle it. Those beads are versatile so they could be used in many different ways. I would suggest these options:

1) Re-string it (pearl necklace style) into a double-strand necklace. This would be a more classic, dress-up look.

2) Link each bead together with wire-wrap loops. This would make the necklace more casual. It could be kept long so you could double wrap it when you wear it or left long. Or it could be made into a double-strand necklace with the wire-wrap loops.

3) Find some more "vintage" 80's beads and restyle it completely by creating a whole new look. Look in thrift shops for other 80's necklaces that could be taken apart. Also, many bead shops have a "vintage" section that may have some options. And I've found some nice vintage beads on EBay.

It's a porcelain necklace. She meant the style was like a string of pearls, I believe.

AJ, I think it all depends on what you want out get from the necklace. I think it's been mentioned that a single strand of pearls (or beads in this case) is a very classic look. I don't know if matronly is the right term, but definitely playing it safe in the accessories, which is fine. I think it might be best to think about the outfit possibilities you would use this necklace for and then decide what to do with them. I would look at necklines of outfits and whether the longer strand would be best or whether you might be able to pair them with some other type of beads and make an interesting but simply stated double stranded necklace that you could wear with some of your new v-neck tops.

I definitely want to do something with the necklace. If the style itself is dated, I'll use the beads to make a bracelet or another necklace. I was wondering more about the knotted "pearl" style. I feel like it's classic but I don't want to look matronly.

I don't think it dated. I've seen loads of bead necklaces in the stores. Especially if it was something given to you from your parents, and has sentimental value, it'll be worth restringing.

I'm sure it has loads of sentimental value for you which would make it worth fixing and wearing.
What is the length of the strand?
I don't know if it is outdated or not. I see things like this in the stores all the time. I think it's very pretty.
I have pearls that look about like your necklace which I always save for very special occasions but I really think I should wear them more often. I think jewelry with sentimental value is the best.

I don't think I have heard of porcelain beads before this (I don't know how unusual or crazy that might sound). Personally, I prefer smaller beads like those for bracelets or as layer necklaces. Maybe you could take a cue from Julia and do something creative to liven them up, but the expense of fixing it would have to be worth it. I don't think I would like them worn on their own though. Seems a bit old fashioned to me. However, I have no idea what a pear necklace is...?

My parents gave me this white porcelain bead necklace when I was in college in the 1980s. I used to wear them as a single strand or wrapped around my wrist as a bracelet. Unfortunately one day I hit my wrist hard on something and broke the necklace. It's been sitting in my jewelry box for a few years now. I keep thinking that I should get it fixed, but I'm not sure if it's a classic bead necklace that I can wear for years -- or if it's an 1980s look that I need to avoid. Because it is knotted like a pearl necklace, it will cost $30-$40 to re-knot, which is why I want to be sure before I spend the money.
