Such an interesting post. My first thought was that black skinnies feel much more aggressive for me than white; our emotional connection to colors is so fascinating. I can see how pairing these particular shoes with white jeans might feel aggressive, though, due to the very high contrast along with the harder-edged shoe style. Which is the main reason I wear low-contrast shoes almost exclusively with my white jeans (I'll go high contrast on occasion, but it's certainly trickier). Something metallic, taupe, tan, anything lighter would probably feel softer. But still bright and cheerful with all the white, which might still feel "aggressive". I actually quite like the simpler styling here, it's understated and lovely. I'd probably wear it similarly.

I like it so much I think I'd be clearing the accessories off rather than on.

It's a pullover with a crew neck so it's off to a casual start from the beginning unless you woe it with the more dramatic bottoms Anna described.

But I like the way you've styled it, the skull thing is still not exactly a neutral print for me and your shoes are pretty stylish too so I think the jeans make you look friendly.

I think you look great! It's hard to imagine anyone thinking you look boring..

Denise - thanks . lol...it seemed boring and unfinished to me, and I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. It 's that third piece situation where I should have used a scarf and more visible earrings and lost the necklace, which I knew didnt' look great with this sweater but didnt' have time to figure out an alternative that evening. Not enough skin is showing either - which was interesting to note. (ankle, neck)

Thanks Angie - I tried the jeans with these shoes , yes. That might have been the issue. I suppose a taupe-ish colour to match hair and sweater would have been better. And yes, I did see your yorkie pin - what an amazing story! So cute!

Lisa I quite like this look. The sweater, despite the skulls, is quite conservative, so I like Anna's suggestions for wearing it. But back to how you did wear it, I would loose the necklace and add a scarf, either black or in a tone from the sweater worn as in the picture. (not the scarf, just the style of draping it.). I just think that the "third piece" here is not working.

Suz - you're so funny. NO. I am not going to tuck this sweater into anything . It's actually quite long and these jeans are firmly up in mid- highish rise territory. Not gonna happen. You rock a semi tuck ; I look like Herschel. Just add some suspenders - lol. Anyways , I am going to relegate this sweater to work wear and not for sexier/funkier evenings. It will be fine with black cropped pants , booties and a scarf.

I think you looked great, but I also liked the styling options of shorter jeans to showcase shoes, or culottes or tube skirt and no necklace.

If the sweater is cut like the Equipments then a semi tuck might help but I know you don't do those....could you just try an itsy-bitsy one for a second to see? ;) It gives a curve to the hem which is why it can be helpful and can be useful for proportions if you want to try a pullover with a midi skirt.

Thanks ladies. I think rolling the jeans might be the answer, as will leaving the neckline bare - and adding a scarf. I don't mind the idea of a pencil skirt - not that I own one , but the VC tube might work at this time of year for a work look. Approprio - you're right, You've never seen me in a button-down, and I sincerely doubt you ever will anna - yes, a midi skirt would be good too - don't own such an animal , but you never know. My closet is a skirt-free zone at the moment

The white jeans were really distressed and I love them, but again, it was looking too aggressive with such a high contrast between top and bottom and shoes. Una, I think you are right about a regular distressed bf jean. Shorter too . Ugh. I am admittedly not very happy that I bought this sweater without paying more attention to the cut . I thought I was buying another version which had a curved hem and a looser fit. Too late now though - I've owned it far too long to return (a month, I think) , plus I've now worn it . Next time - shorter jeans or pants, no necklace, and stronger eye makeup.

Well, I'm curious what the outfit looked like with white jeans. I tend to wear my white jeans almost exclusively in warm weather and my black ones in cool weather. I probably would have changed to the black skinnies as well. I love your shoes and the double ball earrings, which I totally want now.

LOVE that sweater! I'd be all over that one, but I see the problem with styling. I'd keep it very clean, play up the classic v-neck shape and let the skulls speak for themselves.

A few things to try...
- Minimal at the neckline. Maybe try a black tee underneath and no necklaces. (You can still go to town with cuffs and bracelets etc)
- Juxtapose the skull print with classic/preppy styling: tailored pants and a button down shirt. In black, of course (then again, I've never seen you in a button down shirt.)
- Might also play nicely with a pencil skirt and pumps.

Would you consider full culottes or a very slim midi skirt with the same shoes? Depending on your tolerance for volume. They can be black. I think a bit of skin would help. Plus it would showcase those cool shoes more. Right now they kinda blend into the skinnier.

I love the idea of the sweater (grey, roomy, skulls), but I think the length makes it hard to style since it's not swingy on the bottom. It's a bit classic and reminds me of the Equipment sweaters, which run roomy and long. I think styling it with distressed jeans might do the trick. Love the necklace itself too!

First--you look truly great. I agree with smittie that somehow the necklace isn't helping you pull off the look. I'd love to see the neckline bare. Also there's something conservative about that long line of black. I wonder if you could cuff the skinnies at the top of the ankle bone. Or even tuck them under at that point if you don't like cuffs. Your shoes deserve the attention. I've been doing that lately with my skinnies and it feels sleeker not to have the scrunch. (Trying to get up the nerve to hem!) Finally, I love the pink lipstick with the look and I think you could go even stronger on the eye. These are all fine tuning ideas and the outfit is great as is.

I feel like you'd need to maybe pair it with a big black scarf or something? The necklace, though statement-y, isn't big enough, I don't think.

I have always liked the idea of white jeans in fall and winter - worn with boots and a creamy fisherman knit sweater...you know, that kind of look. I've never done it, for many reasons...the least of which is the difficulty in keeping white jeans clean for longer than 5 minutes in winter. Anyways, after Angie's Friday ensemble post, I thought I'd give my white jeans a whirl for an evening out with a girlfriend (oysters and white wine - yum) . I didn't like the look and felt that it was too aggressive somehow, probably given the sweater I was wearing. I ended up changing into some black skinnies and felt much better. This was the first outing for this sweater, and truthfully the whole look felt a little too sedate for my liking, despite it being a skull sweater. Not sure what was missing here - but maybe next time I'll try a different accessory mix. It could also be that the cut of the sweater is a little boring. I don't know. Any suggestions for how to showcase this sweater in a different way are welcome!!
