Thanks Deborah. And I'm still trying to find this picture of you with a lightweight, I think pale blue, sleeveless dress. I remember thinking I might like one like that, but I didn't "favourite" it and haven't yet found it by searching (or reading through a year or so of your blog!)

We are still in summer and the most useful items for me during heat above 90F or 30C are breezy, non-clingy tops that don't require a cami underneath. On every other day of the year I feel more comfortable with an extra layer but when it is super hot I need the breeze.

Hi Deborah - we were writing at the same time.

I don't think shoes are on the cards this summer. I think what I have will do. I don't want to compromise any more with shoes purchases so I'll wait until I can afford some good ones.

Were you really fine in such fitted dresses? Metallicus is just over the road from me so I can try them out for fit. The Motto one looks interesting. What size do you think I'd be?

ETA - I know how you feel about summer temps being hard to imagine!!

And here's a longer reply to everyone :-)

Bijou I will definitely check out Sussan! and "white broderie anglais peplum top" sounds so nice. I love that fabric! I work in town, so I'll check Zara out. I do have a difficult relationship with peplums - love how they look - often don't like how they feel, because I have a very long torso and the waist seam tends to be on my ribs or just under them in a way I find irritating. Like you I'm in AC for work so can wear thicker stuff there - I pretty much wear the same office clothes all year, but with different tops.

Ariz - I think in celcius too - I have to use the online converters too! It is quite hard to even imagine summer when we are having the coldest spring for decades where I am

I actually haven't found it that easy to find "shapeless cotton dresses", I wish I had bought multiples in the one cotton dress I have which was bought maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I have a couple of baggy rayon dresses, which seems to be what they are producing instead of cotton ones

A loose tank top with some sort of style to it is something I'm looking for, for sure

BJ - I've not bough any linen tees yet, but I might. I wouldn't wear the cami though - no way can I stand that in the heat - I'd be with you in Canberra.

Diana Yes a loose dress is on the list for sure. I agree with you on tight waists - past about 32 degress C they are a no-no for me. However I do have some summer that I call "pleasant summer" - with say maximums of 25-32 (77-90). Those more pleasant days are common in December and early April, and even in hot Jan- March there'll be some pleasant day in beween the heatwaves. And I have cork bed sandals! (see finds)

CocoCat - I think your summers are harder than ours. How did your A-line skirt go? The straight denim skirts I've had before were too hot for hot summer, but maybe A-line would be cooler?

Lucy - yes same situation with work. Really just asking about out of work weather. Last year I tried one of those target tee shirt dresses and felt my lack of bust! Mind you that's a common experience with me, and I'm willing to give it another try.

Anne I don't remember Summer, it seems like eternity since it has been warm here lol... but... here are my thoughts:

1. A Dress
A sleeveless dress that can be worn alone for casual on hot days, or can have a light jacket over it for the office. For example, and i have one of these and it's suprisingly cool and comfy to wear on a hot day and we get temps over 40.

http://www.metalicus.com/colle.....tripe.html

http://www.metalicus.com/colle.....dress.html

Or for something not fitted, I totally recommend the Jersey Moon Dress by Motto.. I wore the black version last season and it is a dress that works in all situations.

http://www.motto.com.au/dresse.....0_1001230/

2. Pants

Im at work so will see what I can find and come back.

3. Shoes

same will get back to you:)

The would be my top three. I would buy good quality (not crazy expensive) that I really like and am happy to wear over and over.

xxx

Hi Anne,
Piping in from Brisbane, the epicentre of hot, humid and sweaty! Which is different to your dry heat.
To some degree it depends on if you need clothes for work or home/casual.
I too work in a reasonably dressy workplace - which means there is not as much crossover as I used to have. I think yours might be similar.
I'd say 3 dresses and one bottom, shorts if for casual, or a cotton skirt if for work.
For casual, the t-shirt fabric dresses from Target are awesome - as CocoCat mentioned. They are under $40 and wash and wear like a dream. Then, I'd get a couple of shift dresses, Jacquie E often has good ones on sale, I've found they also wash and wear really well. In QLD everything needs washing after a single wear, so that becomes important! No dry cleaning in summer....
Jeans West has some good shorts.
Have fun!

Hi Anne

The things I found most comfy in the Jan-march heat last year were:

Cotton strappy sack and slip dresses (Target, Supre)
Aline denim skirt from Rockmans
Shortish cotton shorts, one pair from Coles! and the other from a local boutique. I upsize and wear them on my hips. It feels more comfortable in the heat.
Loose cotton and linen tees (Cotton on, Gap, Zara)

For work it was mainly shift dresses, but I have aircon there. No aircon at home!

Honestly? If I were to have only a small capsule for really hot summer, it would consist entirely of loose dresses (no tight waists, especially) and very comfy cork footbed sandals (like my naots). The only other thing I would want would be my silky knickerbockers but they are v old and I haven't seen anything like them for a long time. Maybe a pair of linen or thin cotton shorts for casual/sporty things. And I guess a couple of tops to go with the knickerbockers and shorts.

Great memory, Anne ...white linen tshirt from Zara with a camisole underneath. The cami made the outfit a little hotter but presentable.

Funny story, I was in Canberra during the same trip wearing the same outfit. I couldn't stand the cami any more and ducked into a restaurant to strip it off and just went on my merry let-it-all-hang way. Comfort THEN propriety.

Anne, I'd love to help you but I don't think I can. I was all ready to say that I wore my self-hacked raw hem cropped jeans all summer, but with temperatures of 100 or 110, that's simply not going to work!

The warmest it got here last summer was about 35C, so (according to the handy conversion chart) about 95F. For those temperatures, I live in shorts and a loose tank top. I found two this year that had a really nice shape at a local shop that makes handmade garments. Not much use to you, but it's worth mentioning in case you can find a similar style. I like that they are not clingy, have a nice drape, have a neckline that isn't too low and a scoop back that allows me to wear a normal bra! By the way, that's not me in the picture; it's one of the women who works in the shop. They take turns modelling.

Honestly, if I had to live in your climate, I would probably resort to shapeless cotton dresses (that is, if I didn't die of heat first). I'm not much of a dress gal, but those are the coolest things possible.

Anne over summer I wear summer dresses, cropped jeans, shorts and occasionally a summer skirt. For work, I have to wear corporate clothing, so I often wear skirt suits - but that is fine as the air con at work is set to freezing!
My go to summer shorts are from Sussan, luckily they are making them again this year - the link is attached. I also like the Sussan perfect tank - it is a good basic and a top that I wear tucked into summer a-line skirts, with shorts and jeans and will layer these under tops that can be a bit sheer.
http://www.sussan.com.au/cloth.....hort-white
http://www.sussan.com.au/cloth.....-tank-navy
I promise I do not work at or have any association with Sussan - it is just that these pieces work for me.
Last year I got the most lovely white broderie anglais peplum top from Zara which I need to replace. My experience with Zara is that you have to go in there a lot to find the gems. I did hear that we are about to get a Uniqlo and I am thrilled as Uniqlo is relatively inexpensive and good quality.
I recently bought another pair of cropped jeans. I know that many people find jeans too hot in the Australian summers, but I had a pair last year that I wore all summer without issue. Having my ankles exposed kept me cool - so I am looking forward to wearing my cropped jeans throughout summer.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied. I hope it will be helpful to other's too.

Nadya I've not taken the plunge to crop pants yet, though I do have one old pair I've taken in to make them slim, but have not yet hemmed. I'm a bit concerned that I'd have to buy more shoes to go with them, and also that they'll be too hot. I'd consider them for office wear.

Suz, I was kind of hoping not to have to buy shoes this summer, as I bought 3 last summer - see finds. I also have some platform black heels. The only real hole is something to wear at the swimming pool while my kids do lessons, but I do have some very ancient sandals that will probably do alright.
You are right that tube skirts will be too hot. I am attracted to A-line though (they are by far the easiest to fit for my body type)! I really have hardly any tops in this category ( a couple of looseish tee shirts, a couple of twist knit tops) that I could almost start from scratch.
If I go for an A-line skirt, which tops should go with it? (question for everyone, not just Suz!)

Thanks Jaileen,

Sterling Sleeveless will probably be the way for me to go too.

Delurked I should try boyfriend shorts. I have short legs and proportionately big thighs, which makes shorts difficult, but they are handy to have sometimes!

BJ, thanks. Interesting idea about wearing shorts under dresses. A lot of dresses are very short at the moment. I'm trying to remember what you were wearing on the stinking hot day we met when you were in Australia. You looked great. Was it a white linen tee?

L'Abeille, Culottes! Really. Very interesting! I did love your recent culotte outfit.

Tulle - light gauzey tops sound like what I'll need!

Elizabeth - I lost my skort recently - I had one that I mostly wore for gear while running, but also as a skirt on holidays and for ultra casual. I'll keep an eye out for them

Suz - yes dresses are a given, and something like your sleeveless one is on the must have list. Deborah had one last summer that I liked, maybe from Cos. I do still have some presentable dresses from previous years though, so don't probably need more than one.

Elly - thanks for all the finds, I like the look of that grey skirt, and wonder if it is the sort that Maneera was talking about

Staysfit - humidity makes everything worse - I've lived through humid summers in Japan. Ours is a dry heat. Like the thoughts of linen dresses. I've been wondering about linen tees too.

Barbara Diane, I have some rayon dresses already in my capsule. Believe it or not, it's too hot for maxi lengths for much of our summer (on me anyway) I also almost always go sleeveless, though I'm not keen on my upper arms either!

And my metallic Naot sandals.
Last year I passed on a pair of comfortable more up to date sandals that would have elevated everything, so it is worth thinking about.

This summer got really hot. For the hottest days when I wanted to be covered up, I bought a loose 3/4 sleeve cotton print shirt and loose linen blend drawstring pants.
I also bought a print linen blend top with short sleeves. I wore it with 100% cotton crops.
I wish I had found the very lightweight dresses I've been looking for for several years. Cotton or linen. So many of them are knit jersey, which is hot and sticky.
I did also wear a loose maxi-skirt.
And I finally found my old long rayon casual dresses. I wore those around the house or out for errands on days that were so hot I didn't care if my upper arms showed.

Well, you know how HOT my weather gets and how miserably long our summer is.

For me, having a great casualwear wardrobe was *key* to looking pulled together all summer.

My most successful purchases were:

1) Shift dresses (tshirts dresses are even better, but they don't last more than one summer with all that wear & tear)

2) Denim shorts

3) Printed tees that looked pretty (but essentially just a tee....plus a print is really good at camouflaging stains too!)

4) Knit skirts. You DONT have to spend too much money on these. H&M offers basic Knit mini skirts (in solids and patterns) that are perfect for casual wear/lounge wear and Zara has them too.

I keep it simple when the weather gets hot. We had one of the hottest summers on record here. It certainly wasn't as hot here as it gets where you live, but it's very humid so it feels miserable when it's hot. We had multiple days over 90F.

My summer favorites were linen blend dresses. Loose fit. I still love my Birkenstock sandals. They will always be favorites. I also work loose tunic style tanks with maxi skirts. Finally when I needed to look professional, knit cotton sheath dresses. Linen cardigans or cotton. I like solid colors and add fun with interesting necklaces.

I'm in the same position Anne and kind of thought I had my summer wardrobe sorted but now I'm starting to think I really need a pair of cage sandals or sandal booties as I think they will upgrade my style. I'm really enjoying this thread and love Ellys finds.

I dipped into the land of summer skirts again -- I am a tube skirt convert, but also enjoy a-line jersey and this year added a straight denim skirt. For weekend wear it was denim and linen shorts. I also wore my loose cotton bf jeans I wear with courier shirts and a pair of cropped jeggings quite a bit with jersey tops and tunics with a little interest. sandals or airy sneakers. I have problems with dresses as i like a somewhat straight fit and the less-girly ones tend to catch on my hips awkwardly.

I agree also with the white shorts suggestion -- I wear them several times a week for casual wear. I have a denim pair but my most worn ones are non denim. (Because they're cooler). I looser BF style is cooler.

I second Elizabeth's suggestion of dresses. That would be what I would wear in your climate and even in my own climate dresses are hugely useful in high summer. The two I've pictured are older ones that have been really useful to me.

Hands down, my favourite summer casual bottom is a skort. I've started living in them... super casual would be a running skirt, and less casual (even ok to wear to work) would be the Eddie Bauer ones, which look almost cotton. I also have a couple from Costco, so they don't need to break the bank.

For your hot summers I think a couple of casual breezy dresses would be good.

Our Summer this year consisted of a lovely, warm June & July, and a scorching, humid August, so my favorites had to adapt. For the milder months, I wore rolled pale blue skinny jeans with baby blue satin Converse sneaks or dark cropped jeans with black flats, and pastel tees or loose, delicate white muslin or gauze blouses most days, and narrow white cropped pants with a black lace top and slingbacks for nights out. In August, I switched to knee-length shorts made from an old pair of straight-leg khakis, my much-loved slim white cotton crops, and those same loose, gauzy tops (these saved my life this Summer; t-shirts get too clammy in high humidity) with flat sandals or ballet flats. I wore a very bare pale linen dress with metallic sandals for the one dinner party I went to. Somehow, those blouses were key: they made me feel cool, covered, and pretty, thanks to their light natural fabrics and feminine details.

Truly, my most worn items this summer were culottes. I have 2 navy, 2 black, and a white pair, and all but the heavier-weight cuffed black ones got a ton of wear. I find them super versatile: they are cooler than clams or capris, dressier, than shorts, more casual than skirts. They took me from rehab in the morning, to office in the afternoon, to walking on the beach in the evening. They can be dressed down with a tank or up with a blazer. We never see your superhot temps here, but I do find them breezier than closefitting bottoms would be.

It does take a certain level of confidence to carry them off I suppose; I don't recall seeing anyone else wear them. It helps if you like the things you like and wear them regardless of trends. But if you do, this summer would be a good year to find lots of selection in the shops before they vanish again.

I haven't shopped in 18 or so months except for odds and ends so my mvps are from a few seasons ago.

White shorts cuffed (br) and uncuffed (Jcrew)
Navy blue linen long sleeved shirt (Jcrew) adore!
Denim skater shoes (rag and bone, Nordies)
Purple printed cotton beach dress that I wear with shorts underneath as it's two short. (Tory Burch thrifted)
Tropical print tunic dress repurposed to a long top worn with the white shorts. (Zara, ancient)

For work? I lived in two dresses with short. One black a line poly jacquard, the other black linen sheath with leather trimmed sleeves.

I also had a pair of white chinos (Jcrew) in the mix. I was jean averse this past summer.

My best this year have been:

boyfriend denim shorts (it is hot where I live, but going a size larger has made all the difference in not being too hot)

Knit tee or top with interest or detailing

Knit tiered skirt (I have two I love. Some of oldest items in my closet and need replacing soon, but this style seems to be "out", so I will have to look for other skirt styles for next summer)

White shorts

I searched fruitlessly for a dress this summer. I prefer sleeves, and when adding knee length or longer into the equation, apparently that was a HEWI. It will stay on the list to look for next spring. Also, I will allow myself to purchase short sleeve tops (woven or knit) that are flattering any time I find one. My climate can wear this year round.

My absolutely most successful items for high summer were sleeveless tops (button downs, knits, and one lightweight tweed). I reached for them every single day. I felt fabulous.

I am still trying to figure out successful bottoms. I obviously wore something with the tops, but nothing that I considered stellar.
