I think on me the problem is vertically. If you hike the pants up, higher than your natural waist, do the pants look better?

My inseam is 29". I must have a wicked long neck! (ha!)

Sorry to be so clueless about this, but if it's a too much of a fabric issue, is it too much horizontally ( too wide) or vertically ( the rise is too long)? Thanks !

About 27 inches.

I think it's a too much fabric in the hips, not enough fabric in the thighs issue.

Tanya, I have (dress) pants that do that too. I thought it was because I had to go up a size to fit my waist, which made the pants too big in the crotch and butt. If they were too small, they wouldn't bunch--they'd pull. THat looks more like a too-much-fabric issue, than a not-enough fabric issue.

Shiny, what's your inseam?

I love Tahari pants. I have several. They fit really really well on me and do wondrous things for my figure.

This doesn't mean you are disproportionate at all - it means *I* am. LOL.

I have really short legs, but a nearly normal torso length. It runs in the family - my mom's nickname is "momma short legs" and I have an Uncle "Stub." My brother is 5'9" and his inseam is the exact same as mine.... so i don't complain too much... it could be worse!

Well Nicole, u think you now know your rise! It's about medium, and mine is quite similar as well.

Shiny, about that whiskering/bunching issue of mine, I am not sure what the correct term is, but it looks like on this model:
http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/p.....=cat302218

I also thought that it's due to a too tight fit in hips/thighs, but I would try on pants one or two sizes too big, they would almost fall off me but that thing would still occur. And it happens even with super-wide legged pants.

Anyway, I am still confused at what's causing it / how to avoid it .

Good points Shiny, thanks. I do prefer my jeans to be just under my belly button. I do have a squishy lower belly--and can do the same two fistful thing you talked about. 2 big babies, and one C Section will do that. If I'm going under the knife to alter my body, it would be to have my breasts reduced...but I can't justify the risk.

I just measured my favorite jeans--Tahari trouser style. From the cross seam in the crotch to the front it measures exactly 9". Oh, and I'm 5' 4.5". So if my pants land just below my belly button, like yours, and they are both 9", but I'm 4+ inches taller, it sounds like I'm pretty disproportionate....

P.s. I barely have a butt and theoretically flaps should be a good look for me, but I really dislike them, because they have this tendency to curl and resist ironing to lie flat. And if you wear a longer top, the top doesn't lay right over them. But, that could also be because I don't have much curve to my lower back.

Angie can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think whiskering and bunching are more of a factor of hip and/or thigh width. Whiskers would indicate too tight in the hips and/or thigh pants, and bunching too loose in the hips and/or thigh pants. That has been my experience, at any rate.

Although it's probably true that if your rise is too long you might get bunching - but it'll be a different kind of bunching. The zipper will bunch. If your rise is too short AND your pants too tight, you'll get the dreaded camel toe. Eek!

Rise length is often also a matter of preference. I like to "lock and load" the squishy parts of my belly, so I like the rise to hit just below the belly button, where everything is squishy-ess. For me (I'm 5'0") that is about 8.5-9 inches.

If you have very little squishiness in the tummy area, and if you are a pretty pear shape, you probably look better with a lower rise.

In general I think you know if the lower rises aren't for you. Because you get this gut ledge overhang thing going on that isn't attractive nor comfortable.. no matter how loose and long your shirt is!

Back rise is just as important, in my experience. Too long of a back rise leaves a saggy shapeless butt, if you don't have much of one.

Good luck with the jeans Nicole, and let us know how it went. I agree with you about the summers in MA, but I am actually looking for two pairs of white jeans this summer: skinnies for the shirtdresses I already bought and medium wide-legged pair for normal jeans wear.

I think you can wear them year round, as long as it's not raining/snowing outside. I was wearing my old pair in fall&winter with black shoes as long as it was dry. I know that this is the matter of personal preference tough. But they were winter white (kind of cream) not bleach white tough.

About the rise, I think the you described the measuring process correctly. Most of the online places list the front rise only. I would basically measure it on a pair of jeans you think fit you the best rise-wise, and I think for most people some kind of medium rise ( a bit below the belly button) is the best. I don't think it can help you directly determine if you're short or long waisted, but I think that the two could be correlated. For example, I know that I have long waist/short legs, and when it comes to pants I've recently started to suspect that I have a shorter rise than average, since most of pants on me have those awful crotch whiskers/bunching. I've tried everything to find pants to eliminate that, but no help, I can just minimize it if I'm lucky. Going up a size, trying different cuts and materials, nothing helps. So now I'm suspecting that this occurs due the facts that the rise might be to high for me but I have no clue if my speculations are correct I was planning to try on petite pants to confirm my hypothesis, not that it would actually help since the petite pants are too short. Imagine if I asked for long petite pants :0)

Summer is WA is short too. Feel free to wear white pants until Autumn unless you live in the Caribbean or year round hot weather.

Measuring your ideal rise is a good idea Nicole. It’s not a measure of long or short waited-ness though. That’s another measurement and a question of proportion. It’s confusing, I know.

Thanks, I'll have to order both and return one. Neither AT or BR have brick & mortar stores near me. I don't have the need for 2 pair of white jeans. (Summer's in MA are short).

Speaking of...how late in the season can one wear white jeans?

And alot of you talk about your ideal rise. I have no idea what my idea rise is, but if I were to measure my favorite jeans to determine this, would it be from the crotch seam to the top, both in front and in back? Would this help me determind if I short, long or regular waisted?

Nicole, I am also looking for white jeans, and I tried on both of the pairs you linked to. They are actually VERY different in fit. I liked the AT one a lot and almost bought it. I personally don't mind the flap pockets; in fact I think they are kinda cute and I am not averse to accentuating the butt. Their rise is considerably higher and I think they fit quite well. They did gap in the back, though I've heard that this can be fixed through alteration. In the end, I can't point my finger to why I didn't buy them, they came close to being great but then I decided to hold out for that elusive perfection in fit... (I hope I won't regret it ;-))
The BR ones didn't work at all for my body type and size. The rise is lower, and the legs flare quite a bit. I felt too short and too round for them.
Try them both! You have a very different body type than me. I just wanted to point out that they are very different, even if they look similar on the photos.

BR has another pair of white jeans that are lovely too. A little wider but super. Your body type can do this, Nicole. I've seen both above styles in action on people. I think that the AT ones might work better, but the proof is always in the pudding. Try them all on if you can.

They seem very similar. The AT ones have flap pockets on the back. Depending on how prominent they are, they might give you a bit more of a butt (that could be good or bad). I don't think the differences will be apparent until you try them on. Can you order both and see which one is better? I think the AT ones can easily be dressed up.
