I just had to add this link for those who are interested:

Been playing on it for a few days, and there are lots of great posts -- including historical articles about wardrobe capsules. Lots of fun.

Oops! Thanks for setting me straight, Anne. I just looked it up and one of the Georges, not Edward, was king at the time Pride and Prejudice was set! I guess I've had that one wrong in my head for my entire life! (I'm a little one-sided when it comes to education....heavy on the science, light on the humanities).

I just looked up Edwardian fashion. Wow -- not what I thought at all! And not my favourite.

thanks again ladies -- great answers. I think I agree that I wouldn't do the corseted looks, unless it was a costume. But I like it when others do.

@anne -- thank you for the name of the period, I thought that it predated both Victorian and Edwardian by about a century. I also like the dresses on the younger ladies of that period -- especially Anne Hathaway's character in "Becoming Jane".

@lyn* -- oh, please be gentle with the psych patients, they have enough problems. ;P

I would have to say 1940's.
Elisabeth - Pride and Prejudice is Regency not Edwardian - nearly a 100 years earlier.

This is such great timing-- I just hemmed a vintage dress yesterday (50s), and have been thinking about how it's my very favorite fashion era. I love the slim bodices and full skirts, and I even love the bright red lipstick.

Oooo . . . there are a lot of great eras out there. I am a fan of the lawn dresses from the turn of the century (up until about 1915) I have photo of one of my great grandmothers in her lawn wedding dress and like to dress up in reproductions from the era. I love the twenties, mostly because of another great grandmother and a picture of her flapper wedding dress from that era. One of my other great grandmothers was married in the 30s and my grandma was married in her dress. While it isn't quiet as gorgeous, there are some absolutely divine silhouettes from the 30s and 40s, especially in gowns. I much prefer men's fashion from the 40s and 50s though.

I like it all too but wouldn't wear the uncomfortable corseted looking things. The 60's go-go boots look is what I grew up with so naturally that is the closest to my heart.

I kind of like it all in looks but I wouldn't want to wear some of the "bondage" styles.

I have a cousin that always dresses vintage, and not only clothing but right done to the matching hair and make-up.

The other night I watched a very cheesy Italian movie "Anyone can play" filmed in the 60s and I went nuts over the hair/make-up/clothing looks.

I'm a 70's girl at heart. I love denim and tunic tops, boots and sandals. I also have a real fondness for the 1910-1920 period, when women started to lose the corseted look and wear simple, looser silhouettes and bohemian prints.

Basically, I'm not a fan of overly "done," restrictive, or severe styles. So NOT a fan of the 50's or the early 60's Mad Men look.

I love bits and pieces from many different eras. I remember watching Pride and Prejudice (the one with Colin Firth) in the 90s, and loving how the young women looked in their Edwardian costumes (although the look was not so great on the older ladies!). My own wedding dress had an Edwardian element to it -- it was a column-like empire-waisted dress that totally worked on my short, slim figure.

I love the hats from the 20s and 30s, pretty much the entire "flapper" package from the 20s, the beautiful bias-cut evening gowns from the 30s, the short skirts with gogo boots from the 60s, and the flared jeans from the late 90s/early 2000s, just to name a few things.

I really like vintage clothing. The looks are distinct and the quality was often better than with modern versions, as many things were handmade.

I like everything from Edwardian (turn of the previous century) to 1980s /1990s (though the 90s are not yet vintage). My favorite era is hard to define b/c I like so much from different eras, but I would have to say post-war 1940s -- when the fabric and material shortages were relaxed, and designs got more creative. The Christian Dior "New Look" with the wasp waists and flowy skirts would fit into this era (interestingly Coco Chanel was opposed to the New Look -- oooh the politics of fashion).
