I sit in the 'one piece' camp. I think they're the new black - classy, sexy and subtle! I Just splurged on a new heidi klein control one piece

Fuzzy - but you should be really proud of yourself. Any change, that's postive and healthy, in that right direction is a great achievement. When your skin is still bikini ready 20 yrs from now (hey but allowing yourself a little voguing with a lot of sunscreen at times - nothing wrong with that) you'll be thanking yourself that your chest does not resemble Louis Vuitton luggage!!

I agree, gryffin! Looking after your skin is so important! Skin is an amazing organ (and the largest organ of the body- interesting fact, I'm sure you'll agree).

But I also want to have a liiiiiitle bit of fun. Just recently I did find a Seafolly rashie that was a wee bit sexy; very Blue Crush (movie) and would look completely hot with tied bikini bottoms! Hey, it's a compromise......

JAileen - I have a bunch of stuff from LE that I am waiting for. I love, love, love rashguards. I usually wear them over a one piece. This is the first time I'd try it over a tankini top. LE had a lot of cute ones, just hope they fit but the reviews were very good. Hawaii!! My favorite vacation!! Lucky girl!! You'll have an awesome time. Hope you have a fab hat to go with your new suits!
Gail - tankinis are great and it sounds like you have a great plan for coverage. I find cover ups are harder to me to find than bathing suits (so that is going a long, long way!!) I usually wear a sunprotective jacket and a pareo with hat. Okay, people point and make fun but we must SOS (save our skin!! Did anyone else actually read Dodie Smith's 101 Dalmations!!)

One piece swimsuits are not an easy fit for me as I have a long torso limiting most of the styles I like. Not a big fan of swim skirts but they are easy. My preference these days are tankinis with regular bottoms that can be covered up with nylon shorts and a tank top

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Lands End, hoping some of it will work. Several types of bottoms and tops (no one piece suits) including bikini top (!) and board shorts, some rash guards and beach coverups. We're going to Hawaii this year and I know I'll be going in the water. I've never worn a rash guard but I don't really tan so I hope it'll help keep me from burning.

My usual swimsuit use does not include going in the water. I wear a tankini, nylon shorts, and tee shirt when we go canoeing. The lake is too cold to swim in (for me) except for two weeks in August.

GM - you crack me up!! Good job getting around the "grooming" issues!! Talk about excellence in advanced planning and a bit of fabric covering a multitude of sins!! I'll check out title 9. I have the opposite problem. I need suits for tiny tops. Fewer options from my vantage point but that may be my bias!!

Team Tankini here...I love to mix and match tops and bottoms. I am busty so I often buy tops in a larger size than bottoms. The brand Coco Reef is great for me because they sell swim separates and offer a lot of bra-sized tops.
I like tops that stay put and provide a lot of support for my 36DDD's. I often pair sports tops with built-in bras with skirted tankini bottoms. Wearing unskirted bottoms requires too much extra "grooming."

If you like sporty suits, Title Nine is a great E-store to checkout. They also have a great selection of sports bras.

April - battle scars. I hear you. Great door prize but, IMHO, lousy system. Too much wear and tear. Nothing wrong with a great one piece or tankini or wearing said scars proudly. It's whatever makes you most comfortable. Plus I am way into sun protection. I prefer to be covered too.
Janet - I have lap gallbladder scars. The do fade to white but will be slightly visible if they are like mine. So many great suits, you might just want to try on your swim capsule and make sure you still feel great. Also a rashguard is always an addition. But life is full of reassessment. No end to that!! Hope all still feels great on!!

April brings up a point that will be interesting for me the next time I put on one of my bikinis. Since I last wore one, I had abdominal surgery last year -- it was laparoscopic, so I just have two small one-inch scars on either side of my abdomen, but my skin is so fair I doubt they'll ever fade to invisibility. Between that and a slight softening of my midsection (probably related to hormonal changes), I am hoping I don't feel too self-conscious next time I try to don a bikini! Sigh. In some ways, getting older is not fun. Especially since, in my mind, I'm still 29!

Pretty sure my last bikini was in ninth grade.

I can go years in between occasions of putting on a bathing suit (and I spend a fair amount of time in a waterfront community) but when I do, it's always one that covers my middle.

I don't like sun exposure and especially with age, I've come to appreciate the pristine condition of the skin that never sees the light of day.

Plus I have kind of an unfortunately-placed C section scar that is in and of itself not unsightly but that creates odd bulgy terrain on an otherwise flat surface.

torontogirl - wise girl!! That great thing is that there is a style for everyone!! I like to be covered too, a lot is to limit sun but I prefer my middle covered. But I love that so many are confident and happy in their two pieces. So many great tankinis out now too!!

I'm on team tankini ... I like the flexibility of sizing that comes with two pieces, but I also like being covered up. It's not a body-image thing for me wanting to stay covered; I just prefer it (for myself).

I love the different opinions and styles on here though, and think everyone should rock the style that make them feel great

Runcarla - you look great!

I am team bikini all the way. As a member of the big booty club, I definitely need a two piece suit. Also, my hips are relatively narrow in proportion to my booty so I find that string bikini bottoms fit me the best because I can adjust the fit. Non-string bottoms are too wide in width and shallow in volume (for the bootay...lol) so they will droop in front and wedge in back. Definitely not a good look.

I am a proud card carrying member of Team Thick Chick. There is nothing gamine or skinny about me. My butt is big. My breasts are full. My mid-section is a little soft, and my waist is relatively small. But you can't tell me nothing when I put on my swimsuit. I like what I see in the mirror and don't have a problem rocking my two piece suits. I've turned a head or two poolside...despite these "imperfections" Lol

*cues my theme music: "Brickhouse" by the Commodores* ;-)

All jokes aside, being comfortable in my own skin is what I strive for. I focus on and embrace my strengths and the things I love about my body. It makes getting dressed and shopping in general so much easier.

Well, I just bought a bikini this morning! There is a very slight chance I might need one for my trip next week (probably too cold still but just in case). so I picked up a cheap one from H&M - link below, for the bottom I just got a plain black hipster. I got the grey but am considering ordering the black instead (they did not have any other colors but grey in the store). The grey is more interesting but looks slightly underwearish to me.

Viva - it seems like you are in a great place with your swimwear!! If you feel great in a bikini why would you swap it up? Plus sound like you found awesome suits that fit well!! Kudos!
Fuzzy - I have always put a rashguard on top of a suit. Did you see the new rashguard suits on Nordies site? It looks like that's the top. It would be a total gyp if you had to but a matching top to put under that. That was confusing. Also LE was marketing a swimoutfit where I could not see a piece underneath. But when I clicked on the outfit button a third piece was listed. A rashguard without an underpiece, well it could make a wet tee shirt contest look tame!! Those puppies are thin!! I do find the one piece suits with cutouts, mesh, much racier than some bikinis too. But it's one way for the more conservative set to be alluring while feeling a bit more covered. Swim bar...you go girl!!
Sarah - I give you so much credit for trying something outside your comfort zone. I think one pieces can look very alluring. Fuzzy made a great point about suits with mesh and of course tankinis. You can get a bit more coverage while feeling like you're having fun with it!!

I tried a bikini a few years ago, and was so self conscious of my extra bits when I wore it that I've pretty much given up. Each summer I try and try to lose the few pounds that I think it would take for me to feel comfortable, but it just never happens. So, I've resigned myself to finding one-piece suits that flatter.

I found this one at Land's End, although it looks like it's discontinued.

I also did buy a tankini with boy shorts from Athleta, for paddleboarding.

One pieces and bikinis both have their place! I usually choose something demure for the morning and something a bit more fun for when the swim up bar opens This is not necessarily dictated by the amount of flesh covered or revealed but by the vibe of the swimsuit eg a high waisted bikini is fairly conservative but a one piece with mesh inserts might be considered a bit racey.....

Gryffin- what to wear under a rashie? A bikini top of course!

Carla, love that picture of you!!!

I wore a one-piece until I had kids, and then I joined team bikini. I keep telling myself I am getting too old to wear one, but I just can;t seem to make the move to a one piece. To me, bikinis are so, so much easier to fit since you can buy each piece separately, and much more flattering to small-breasted women. And like texstyle, I really, really like getting a little color on my stomach.

While I covet the one piece from Tory Burch's runway show, I will probably not spend the money on it, and will instead trot out a bikini on vacation and when I go to the beach this summer. I have one black and white tie-dyed bikini from Ralph Lauren, and a plain pair of navy bottoms, as well as two structured tops from JCrew, and I mix and match everything -- which is also fun.

Neel - You never have to apologize to me. We're having a conversation and I am so happy you felt comfortable enough to discuss it. I love when threads take on a life of their own. Why else are we here!! I think you are totally awesome Neel. One of the most important things, at least to me in life, is being open and curious, continuing to learn and grow. I think learning to swim is such an important skill, not just for pleasure, but for safety. You should be so proud of yourself. I hope you find a fantastic suit and I think you will have a terrific time!! I hope we'll get to hear about it!! You go girl!!!
Runcarla - that is the best advice on this entire thread!! Thank you for putting that out there. You are so right. Although not all of us will use that capsule all year round, if we had it (just like the formal/evening capsule) how much panic would we avoid!! Great, great, great list!!!
Debora - that is such a gorgeous suit!! You and Parsley will be elegant twins. Great color too!! Enjoy!
Marmee - I still don't have a great suit either. I don't think that will make you feel better but you know that you are not alone. I think there will still be suits out there but it would be prudent to look soon. Just a toss out, could you use the bottom of the suit you like and look for a separate top? I know it's a waste of cash but just to have in the back of your mind!
texstyle - you go girl and be just like granny sveta!! She sounds like the most awesome role model!! Enjoy your bikini!!
fastkat - that might be exactly the print I got for the rashguard. I thought it was supercute too. Can't wait to see it IRL. Going to check out you links right now!!

I love the swim dress from Athleta that is linked in an earlier comment. Super cute.

I am definitely on the tankini with swim skirt team. I would love to wear a one-piece swimsuit but need some sort of skirt to cover my upper thighs.

This year, and last, I bought my suit from Lands End. They hold up well and like the fact that they sell D-cup suits. This year I bought a black and white print flounce swim mini and a black top. Last year I had the same styles but pink top and black paisley bottom. :-) It's funny, I tend not to wear black and white prints (least of all tapestry prints -- too home decor) but I thought this pairing looked super cute and it is.

I'm with Sveta's Grandma :) - Bikini - I can't stand the way the fabric of a one piece feels on the mid-section. And I don't want a tanned body with a white mid-section.

I saw this thread days ago, and ignored it because the subject is so painful for me. I am long in the torso, and find it difficult to find a comfortable one piece. I dislike tankinis because I don't like the flapping feeling on my belly underwater. Ideally, I'd wear a two piece. However, despite the fact that I go to vigorous exercise classes four times a week, have lost fifteen pounds in the last year, and am at close to an ideal weight/bodyfat level, my tummy is puckered looking and doesn't look toned.

I'd really like to find a two piece swimsuit with a higher waist than bikini, and a top with some sort of support. I found what look like the perfect bottoms on the Nordstrom website, but the top is bandeau style, not halter, and I need the uplifting help of straps.

I'm hoping that I haven't waited too long to find a suit for this year. I'm worried that last year's suit won't fit properly anymore!

Team one-piece for me. I bought an emerald green La Blanca suit in January for my trip to Key West and am thrilled with it. It was my first new suit in 5 years!

Per your last post, griffin, I'm thinking that anyone who spends any time in the water--a backyard pool, beach or lake vacation, water park or hotel jacuzzi needs a swim capsule!

Suit for activity - one piece, tankini, or athletic style bikini that stays put
Suit for lounging - one piece or bikini
Sun protection - rash guard, hooded light weight jacket, mesh dress
In transit - shorts, dress, parero
Accessories-flip flops, sandals, or water shoes, hat, sunnies, beach bag, towel

Although it might not get the most wear, there would be no last minute panic like when trying to find a suit in February for a mid winter break, or no excuse not to accept a last minute invite to a friend's lakeside cottage! No more embarrassed slink down the hotel hallway and elevator with a towel as wrap, and sport sneaks. Nothing so precious that it couldn't be wash and hang to dry or would get stained by chlorine or saltwater.

Moreover who can resist a hunky lifeguard?
