A really good fabric store, like say Banksville Designer Fabrics. I love them because their swatch service is amazing, among other things. If I can have good fabric, I can make the clothes.

Love this question! Well everyone says Nordstrom, but I live in Europe so I say Galleries Lafayette in France... they carry a lot of great brands from Esprit to Desigual to high end... for all ages and styles... if only I could afford it!

If I could afford it, it would be Boden all the way. I adore their quirky style and whenever the catalog arrives in the mail I bookmark every single page.

But in real life, with my real budget, I guess I'm another one for the Old Navy/Gap combo. Their prices are affordable, and once in a while there's an inspired good find. I also like H&M. The clothes last surprisingly well for the price and for some reason they fit me super, especially the pants.

Another vote for Goodwill! But can I have Ebay too as the online equivalent? Since all of the regular b&m stores have websites? *puppy dog eyes*

(Funnily enough, if you allow both, that *is* my shopping life for everything besides underwear & shoes. I had a brief fling w Like Twice this summer but now that they've started charging shipping for returns it's back to Ebay as my only online clothing source.)

The magic of Macy's! We have 3 of them within a 30 minute drive here, and one is quite large - 3 vast floors with everything you could ever want at all price points. We don't have a Nordstrom here in NY, and the only one I have ever shopped at was in Cherry Hill, NJ, while visiting family. It was nice but there was not much selection in the store.

It would have to be a department store for me simply because of the variety - so, I'm going with Nordstroms. It would be a tie between Zara and Target for my second choice! Zara for the trendy/current items and Target for my very casual items that I have to wear when working with the shelter animals.

With my budget, Nordstrom. I had no idea that they had such good CS. I regret not making purchases there in the past, and not returning items from them that I bought in-store but did not work out [this was before I knew about their website, when I was but new migrant in the US]. I shop online, so the size of the store isn't a factor.

I shop 100% online with shopbop and yoox. But I recall the days of brick and mortar. I'd pick Saks. Bigger stores like Nordstrom are overwhelming for me! (What is a Brass Plum and how does it differ from a Savvy?) Saks has a range of casual through elite. As with other store brands not loaded with marketing costs, you can get some good values from the Saks label.

My pick would be Nordstrom, too. Clothing, cosmetics, accessories, all in one store. However, even though they have a huge selection of shoes, the offerings in my size, 10.5 N are not so great. If I could have two stores, Nordstrom and Arthur Beren for shoes, I'd be all set!

While I much prefer to shop at local boutiques, if I had to pick one in order to not go naked, it would be Nordstrom. I'm finding that while I do shop their B&M stores, they don't carry most of the really unique things that they DO offer online though.

Ha.
Well, of course the devil is in the "only one store" and once you include online versions, then that allows access to enormous amount of goods (I mean, it's almost hard to think of Nordstrom on-line as "one store").

Shoes are the problem...

While working, I'd have to say, (aside from shoes) that the Mothership, AT, would win. That's not because of haute style, but because I can reliably get work pants and skirts that fit better than any single other maker or even most makers, and the variety of tops is large enough that over time, some form of classic + trendy is possible. And probably could find something in a jean and casual pant, though those have not been as good for finds.

For really using "one store," I'd need a department store, for soup to nuts wardrobe items, if that's the restriction.

I could say Dillard's, because it has many different "sub-boutiques" of varied brands and designers, and some well-made items as well as more affordable items, and of course a shoe department, and I can try things on, and if I were totally limited, I'd go with a place I could try on things IRL whenever I wanted to, maybe even over a humongous online source.

For an online source I'd go with Nordstrom and do the Sears Roebuck thing, live off of mail-order, and order a crateload of stuff several times a year to try on and just return what didn't work.

Boy, that's really tough. I'm Team Non-Stop Shop after all. If forced, I might actually say my Ross - not any other. They get suits from the big department stores, which I cannot ever find when I go into the stores (it's very weird). No other Ross in my area gets them either.

Love reading everyone's choices and why they picked them.

Budget was one of the reasons I chose Target instead of Nordstrom or another department store - I could definitely work with Nordstrom (even though they're sorely low on tall inseam stuff) but I'd have to buy a lot less volume of clothes to make it work financially.

Heck, if money wasn't a concern I'd pick one of the great department stores in London and just fly there whenever I needed new clothes.

Nordstrom, and if I could pick a runner up J Crew. J Crew reliably fits me every time. Nordstrom has variety and the shoes though. I don't like the fit of J Crew shoes. My third pick would be Athleta. They make size small tall which fits me perfectly, and has been great for for my running/yoga/Pilates gear. Nothing else comes close. Oh, I already shop all three stores! I would be lost without them!

I want to shop online. I would really rather have my groceries delivered also. Or catalogs, they would do also. Used them all of the time when I lived in a small town with two boutiques only.

I have to agree with maybe a Nordstrom or a Nieman Marcus. They have everything from workout apparel to formal dresses, from stilettos to Ugg boots. The variety alone would necessitate a choice like that for me.

It would have to be a department store like Nordstrom or Bloomingdales (or a Japanese department store like Takahimaya, Sebu or Isetan), because they offer the most variety (clothing, footwear, accessories and basics).
