I like both patterns but I like the fact that #1 has finer yarn. I think a thinner sweater might be more wearable than a bulky one. If you wanted to shorten #1 I think it would be really easy to take out some of the sections, or a similar proportion of several or all of the sections. I like how the top is light and the bottom is dark on both, sort of like Escher. On #2 I don't like the corregated ribbing on the sleeves since the rest of the ribbing is plain.
