Yes, Brooklyn, they are super popular here! And the love cuts across a huge cross section of the population.
It is definitely not a workwear brand and even the snooty shopkeepers would be fine with them because there are only so many winter boots you can actually wear.

JAileen, those brown Timberlands are really nice. I had a look at some Timberlands today that had the same tread. They're really nice leather and have a nice lining. The tread is not quite enough for my needs though.

Aquatalia or La Canadienne are the very best choices for practical winter boots with a nod to fashion. With a nod also to Blondo.

Everyone has blundstones? Really? That is excellent. They are an Aussie brand and we consider them a work wear brand here. Years ago I had a pair (mostly for dog walking) and when I ventured into snooty shops the SAs would do a pretty woman on me. Guess I was actually being fashion forward. Anyway, blunnies all the way!! My next vote would go to the second pair.

Have you looked at Timberland? They make waterproof lug sole boots. It looks like they're having a sale right now, too. I have several pairs of Timberland boots and the quality seems pretty good.

Thank you People of the North (and Angie)!
Like Suz, I love those red Blundstones with the plaid. Those are on my list. My only niggle with Blundstones is that everyone has them, but maybe I should get over it.

I checked out La Canadiennes, and found these guys.
But I prefer the price of the Blundstones.

Roxanna: I already have a pair of Sorels and would prefer to have a less recognizable brand, but completely understand how functional they are.

I LOVE the red blunnies with the plaid. I saw them in store yesterday and almost walked in and bought them there and then, but decided to wait since I haven't been completely happy with the sizing on my other blunnies.

And if you want some preppy lug soles, look how cute these Blunnies are -- my younger daughter got these last year for the wet Portland winter/spring and they are adorable. A great red with plaid goring.

I second Suz's point, and I think I might be in the market for Blundstone's myself this year. Lug soles are terrific but not enough if it's snow and real weather you are thinking about. Oh, those beautiful brown suede ones!!!

PS, Although the Aquitalia Sweeties are no longer available brand new, I did find several great looking pairs on ebay the other day. So that's an option if you like those. They are on my possibilities list too.

Great advice from Suz, and I second Aquatalia or La Canadienne, I had a similar need since we live in the same climate and ended up getting a pair of Sorels last year with a high wedge heel, which I think makes them a little more interesting and fashion forward. I think too RATE for your style (and perhaps for mine too!) but they did work out well. I love your idea of throwing on a tartan scarf to prep them up.

Via Spiga for sure. But wait. Do they need to be somewhat weather proof as well?

In that case, I'd consider looking at some La Canadiennes or Aquatalias. Rats rats rats we didn't get deals on that type of thing at NAS this year, but it might still be worth the investment. (Examples from 6 pm which unfortunately we cannot get here in Canada). I'm also in the market for a similar thing. I can refurbish my motos for another year of wear but I wonder if they will get through the entire season and would love to have an alternate.

I think I understand your purpose here. It's for something between a snow boot and a bootie. I have this same need and it's a huge one for me. I wear this type of boot almost daily in winter. More than booties for sure, and more than snowboots if I can.

I got a pair of Blundstones a few years ago and haven't worn them as much as I expected. These used to be a favourite of mine. Not a true lug sole but they do work in similar situations and are fairly weather proof, but for some reason the sizing isn't great on me. I think I want to upgrade.

I think I would lean toward the Via Spiga, or something like that. I really like the Fleuvogs, but that style is definitely more RATE and if used, even moreso. I think you'd have to constantly be pushing against RATE with them, and maybe that's okay, but with something like the Via Spiga, which has a bit more refinement, you're more in your zone to start.

I need traction. I might've got confused when setting up my 'Finds'. I did it last night.

So I don't want anything without good tread, so I will remove those ones.

I'm looking for a lug sole boot for winter. The boot must be chunky, and I'm having a hard time picking because chunky boots don't thrill me. Below are some options.

1. (and see pics) Fluevogs. These look a lot like Doc Martens. These are my favourites because I love the quality but I am wondering if they are too RATE for me? Would a tartan scarf prep them up enough? I would be getting them second hand.

2. Another option. I like their suede texture. They feel a little less hard-edge than regular leather. They also come in dark grey.

I'm also looking for fall booties but that's a topic for another day!
