Thanks Rabbit, I've just ordered the blue pair. We'll see how they work out and because shipping and returns are free I won't have lost anything if they don't fit. I agree that you can always spot the gear no matter what it is paired with, that's why I said I wouldn't want to wear them in everyday life afterwards. I don't like that look at all. I definitely plan to wear normal pants around town, it will loook 'practical' enough wearing a gearish jacket, without adding the pants into the mix too.

I like the dark grays or the blues. My experience is that the fit of these kind of pants varies widely, as does the comfort of the knee zip (sometimes you can feel it when you sit down for example). They are usually fairly dirt resistant and wash and dry very quickly, but if you are really trekking you will probably run into a lot of dark peaty mud - I brought along cheap gaiters to cover the top of my boots and ankles if I was doing any roaming over the hills and it had been raining. Also the hems can get pretty muddy, so less fun to roll up if you don't go for the zip off style and get hot while walking.

They do look like gear pretty much no matter what, so I tended not to wear them in town if I could avoid it and wanted to be more low key than touristy.

Thanks everyone! :)

Jaileen and Eva, good to know the zip up feature probably isn't a necessity.

Shiny, I could go to a store but I don't want to pay as much money as most of these pants cost regulary and I'm very bad at walking away without buying, especially when I had good assistance to find something beforehand. I'm probably going to buy the rain jacket in store so I can try it on, but it would be great to get the pants as cheap as possible. And there's not sale in retail stores at the moment and there likely won't be before I leave.

I think I'm going to order the blue pair in two sizes, the reviews say they run large so it might be good to have the size down to compare.

Personally I wouldn't worry about whether they zip off or not; if you're that hot, just roll your trousers up! They'll be made out of a thin material, so it shouldn't be too bulky anyway. I'd go with one of the darker colours so it looks less gear-ish and hides stains better.

Since there are good reviews & the possibility of returns with the second option, I'd be tempted to start with the blue pair from them, and then if I still felt the zipper was super important, go with the other company.

I bought some of these for our trip to Costa Rica, and they worked great. I wouldn't worry about having to wash them - they are designed to dry ultra fast. But I would recommend going to a store to try them on in person, rather than ordering online, if you can! Especially since you are petite. If I recall correctly, I found mine at an REI. I tried on a zillion styles and sizes to find some that fit and somewhat flattered.

I bought several pairs of zip off pants for our trip to Alaska a few years ago, and then also took them to Turkey last year. I have never zipped them off! Mine are tan and light olive. They were great because I could wash them in the sink and hang to dry and they dried overnight, usually. If I were doing it again I would get grey.

I think you will adore having these and will get a lot of use out of them. I'm no help because I like all three colors. In my personal wardrobe, I own olive green (which I love) and black (great all around color). I could see grey begin great option as well.

I searched around some more and I found another option at a different store, similar price but without zip off option. BUT they ship on account and I could order different sizes. They have a blue and a purple version and also one in black, but the black one would probably be too big in the size that is left. They have gotten great reviews too, in comparison to the other ones where I can't find any.

They have the blue and the purple in my size, the blue in a size down and the black in a size up.

Thanks kkards! I don't think warmth would be a problem with the dark colors, if it gets truly hot I can always wear them as shorts I guess. There's no review of these exact pants available (there aren't many reviews in general on the page), but I'll try to find reviews to some of their other pants elsewhere.

I like either of the dark pants, but wonder if the lighter color would be better for warm weather.
Are there customer reviews on the site (or other sites) that can give you a feel regarding sizing?

Thanks Manidipa! Yes, I'm going to bring jeans for the days we're only going around town or doing small walks. I plan to wear the trekking pants only when a longer tour is planned, say over two hours walking or so. Or in town when I know we might be outside pretty much all day and the weather is really awful. I don't have pants other than jeans at the moment, but I'm on the lookout for a pair of khakis or something similar. The point about laundering is a good one.

Thanks JamC! It is dark grey, I think. The color is called carbon and it looks grey on my screen. I definitely don't want to continue wearing these in everyday life afterward, but it would be nice if they didn't look too much like gear in case I wanted to wear them with sneakers around town too. I guess in that case the light colored ones are out anyway...

Thanks Diane! Yes, I already had a preference for one of the darker colors too. I'm still hesitating which grey to go with. I guess the lighter one might be nicer for summer.

Thanks Carolbee.

ETA

I had a look on the homepage of the brand in addition to the webshop page and the lighter grey looks rather warm colored there, while the darker grey seems to have a bluish tint. I definitely don't want anything warm colored as it would clash with some of my tops, so I think I'm going with the dark grey one.

I like the middle ones, dark grey I think? I would disregard the light ones for practical reasons, nobody wants more washing when on holiday.

I can't tell if the first pair is dark grey or blue. I would get either of the darker, not the lighter. I agree with ManidipaM that lighter would need more washing. I think trekking pants are necessary for hiking or other adventure type trips so encourage you to get them and wear them only for those adventures; then next trip you wan't need to replace!

Blue probably will look least gearish if that is a concern. Are you bringing jeans? Khakis too? Choose on the basis of that as well... Either because you are packing a navy capsule assay or to provide an alternative colour for variety. The pale ones will need laundering before wearing each time I suspect... Not so the darker ones.

I need some new trekking pants for our summer in Scotland because I don't want to wear jeans going hiking... I found these here on sale for a reasonable price. They're supposed to dry fast and they have legs you can zip off. And they don't have all those pockets other styles have, which makes them look more like 'normal' pants in my eye. They seem to be slightly tapered too, which would be great. They don't have petite sizing so the legs are probably way too long, but I'd have to try how that works out with the shorts and everything and then shorten them if needed. I hope these work out fitwise, I don't want to continue looking. It's bad enough I don't have a rain jacket yet.

Which color do you think I should try?

ETA

Anyone have experince with gear sizing and sizing charts? I'm not sure which size to order. I should fit into the 38 looking at the size chart, but just about. The size up would definitely be too big looking at the numbers. I don't want to order two sizes because they don't do sale on account.

ETA2

Added another option down below.

ETA3

I ordered the blue pair I posted below in two sizes. Hopefully one will fit and not look too bad. If all else fails I will have to go to the store after all...
