Carla- It has been a mild winter so far, but it could easily be cold until at least the end of April/early May. So, 2-3 months would likely be the most wear I would get until mid October or so. No dressy events coming up, so maybe waiting is ok.

You DO have a wardrobe hole of the ‘casual, but could be dressy’ type. What SarahD8 said. This seems to narrow down things to #1 - or wait. I’m thinking there are still 2 months to wear such a coat, and then not until November 2020?

Sarah - "something warm and layerable that can go from casual to dressy" yes, that is what I am thinking, too. Like a topcoat of sorts... maybe. The concierge told me that sale items are final sale; the girl at the store says that's only if they are marked down 50% or more *shrug*.

Thanks for weighing in, Kelly!

I will sleep on it some more.

Late to the party but I love 1. I'm an IT too and that's the one that I gravitate to. I find belts too fussy and unless you have a long neck, the high collar on 2 could be annoying.

Oh NM my son is 23 now! This was back in 2004 when he was actually 7 and quite opinionated. Now I don’t think he notices my clothes at all. I thought if you needed to take the kids to the shop it might be fun to get their opinions.
I often buy stuff on final sale and it mostly works, but I take the things I might wear with the item with me to the try- on.

Adding to the chorus— I prefer 1 or 2 for you. I think 3 is too buttoned up. I see your style as having a slightly undone element — polished, but a hint of rock n roll, if you will.

Looking at your current coat collection it does seem to me that you have a wardrobe hole. You need something warm and layerable that can go from casual to dressy. I think the ones you have identified are hitting that spot. But, I have to tell you, I would be a bit hesitant to purchase a coat on final sale even if I could try it on. I’d want to take it home and try it with a variety of outfits, wear it for a while to make sure it was comfortable. But may be that’s just me broad shoulders speaking....

Oh, Synne’s “clothes to go shopping for more clothes in” comment...I feel seen and also called out, lol!

Thank you everyone, for your input!

TG - yes, the first is quite plain... good point.

Carla - I do have broad shoulders; thank you for the tip! The cashmere blend sounds so dreamy.

Angie - I love the color. Need to make sure I don't have heart eyes (or sale goggles!)

Jenni - I think a trip to the store is next. Your 7 year old is too funny! My 5yr old like me best in my bathrobe

Rachy and Jaileen - good point about the belt.

TheCat - yes! I saw your comment about the skirt! I will try it when the weather changes. I like the idea of it with Birks.

slimcat - thank you!

Suz - Good point about the belt. I would wear mostly with jeans, so bulk and fussiness is a concern (and something to avoid).

notsaf - Great point about the necklines. The lapel on #1 supposedly can close; I have a single breasted thigh length very thin coat that is open nearly to the waist.

Synne - A bakery in Paris sounds amazing! I thought about a long puffer, but I feel a little too sloppy/undone in them when worn with jeans and hoodie+joggers. #1 is a camel hair blend, which is supposedly more water resistant, but you give me food for thought.

Maybe I will take more time to see if I really have a wardrobe hole here, or if I am just jonesing after my January SYC.... :D

My warmest coats:

Parka is waterproof and great for subzero temps. Way too hot for temps above 0F

Peacoat is doublecloth wool, but too small to layer under. Best for temps above 40F

Puffer works for in/out of the car and short jaunts.

Borg/faux fur like a warm, thigh length hug, but not if it's drizzly

I will call Aritzia and see if they have #1 or #2 to try on. If not, I will wait to see what pops up at NAS.

Love the cognac colour!

Just my two cents: I like the IDEA of a long coat. I have even aquaired quite a few, new and thrifted. But I seldom or never wear them. My lifestyle and climate don't seem to go along with long coats.. Too fuzzy to wear when seated (car, commute). When it's really cold I'd rather wear puffers, when it's pouring rain I need waterproof jackets.

The weather has to be relatively mild and dry. I must prance around freely when wearing them. They are what I'd wear to grab a coffe and croissant at a Parisian bakery (dreaming...). Looking in shop windows. They are what I'd wear out shopping, really. Clothes to go shopping more clothes in... yikes

I'm so glad to find I'm not the only one who finds ties on winter coats on the fussy side! I thought it was a great failing in my part. Haha.

How do you feel about the high neck of #2? If you wear bulky scarves slot, it may not play well.

How do you feel about the open neck of #1? It will, on the other hand, mean you're obligated to wear a scarf in cold weather.

#1 without reservation -- if the fit is good. A tie-waist style can be very annoying in wool or wool blend -- ends up feeling bulky around the middle, especially if you are wearing a belt (jeans) beneath. I love the look but after multiple experiments have concluded that for me, at least, it is usually better to reserve ties for lighter weight trenches.

The cocoon is nice but not as versatile. If you are frequently in and out of a car, it might be better, though.

I love #2 the best - the streamlined look with high neck collar feels modern and special. The slightly menswear/androgynous look of #1 could be easy to wear with more classic and feminine pieces.
I'm not into classic tie belt style but it's just me .
I guess it all depends on your style preference.

OK, the correct colour and length make a big difference. I am still leaning towards #1 for you, but #2 is a close second. I guess a trip to the Aritzia store is in order. I remember taking my 7 year old son on a shopping trip for my sister’s wedding- his opinions were quite instructive, and fun!
He was so indignant that I didn’t buy his first choice! And I find it funny because now I don’t think he cares one whit what his mother wears.

Hobbs first, Babaton second. I think you can carry off the tie belt. The styling is very classic, but I see it as within your wheel house (at the edge of your comfort zone?). From what I’ve seen of Hobbs, it seems to fit a narrow shouldered frame best, so that may make the decision for you. Cashmere in a coat is a dream. On the other hand, the Babaton is a very, very close second place, and seems your style/comfort zone (from what I see in your WIW photos.) #2 looks too short to wear over a dress or skirt - if that is what you intend ‘for good’.

Hmmm, I'm rather partial to #2 ... It feels classic and minimal and could dress up or down, and although it's interesting in shape it doesn't read as trendy to me so it won't go out of style. I agree the third one of gorgeous but perhaps a bit too formal feeling. The first one is nice but there's not much to it, if that makes sense ...

Well, it depends on your style and your body shape.
To me, #2 looks as the most dressy one.
#1 looks timeless, classic and casually elegant. The design (including lack of shoulder seams) might be great for an Inverted Triangle. The colour will be gorgeous on a redhead.
#3 looks great, but the design might look too fussy on an Inverted Triangle.

I was thinking the same thing as Liesbeth. All 3 are fab but they are so different in style. I think I'd need to see them on you first

Isn’t the cocoon one quite short? I prefer the colours of 1 and 3 for you with your hair, and for your style I’m thinking 1.

They are completely different and I feel like a try on would quickly settle things... Like does the drooped shoulder really look off on you, do the pockets emphasize your hips (they look subtle enough in the pic), does the longer coat feel too heavy or formal on you...
That being said, I personally think cinnamon or olive would look best with your style and coloring and any coat with utalitarian details (military, storm flap...) would suit your adventurer style So I'm less for coat no 2 though I do like the neckline.

I love the drama of the cocoon coat, but coats have to go the distance, so you really have to love it! Three very different options here. The first one feels very menswear-y, the second feminine and modern, and the third a classic almost 1940s feel. I guess you have to figure out which vibe is one that you love that you think you would still love a few years from now!

I keep thinking a long, thick wool coat would be a good addition to my winter coat capsule. I would wear it casually - mostly over jeans and pullovers, but it would serve as my "dressy" coat, should the need ever arise.

These three are currently on my radar; do you have a vote as to which might work best for me? Or, should I keep looking?

I should add that I don't have an immediate need, and am not in a rush to buy; I could happily wait until NAS or later to see if something else turns up.

1. I like the military vibe of this one, but does the lack of shoulder seams make it look TOO slouchy? Bonus that it has an interior pocket and reviewers say it is really warm.

2. (Finds photo is wrong; this is the same toffee color as the others, and longer - ETA photo of the long toffee one). I like the high neck of this one. Not sure those hip pockets would do my own hips any favors.

3. This one is great, but I worry it is TOO dressy. The built-in belt may be too high for my long torso.
