Chris, I am sorry that you have these sad events to attend. A black cost will come in handy for any dressy events as well as funerals. Keep the one that you will feel most confident wearing, whatever the occasion.

I'm glad you're listening to your feelings about wearing black. On some occasions, black just feels "right," and it will be nice to have a black coat on hand in future.

Before reading others' comments, my preference was also for #2 (seamed coat) because of the fit on you. It is really lovely on you, a great fit. It will be nice to have a classy black coat in your wardrobe. I know what you mean about having one on hand for funerals. I have one on hand, pretty much for that purpose alone, although I do occasionally wear it otherwise, too.

Thanks Karen13. I know black is perhaps not required at funerals any more but I just felt underdressed and therefore a little less respectful than I wanted to be, so trying to listen to my feelings. Besides, for me a black dress coat is a great basic to have.

La Bell D...they feel equally comfortable, hardly any difference at all. I think the fabric is exactly the same too.

Right Emily K.

The fit on 2 really is so much better and the collar, in your much improved new photos, is formal without the extra weight of the lapel.

In my fifties now, I really appreciate a streamlined, flattering fit and I think classic but not too traditional is fresher looking.

But really, the bottom line here is there's just no ignoring the superior fit of 2.

You look really nice in this coat, Chris, and it's a little less somber than the other and might see more regular wear too.

I think they are both good choices. I like the details on the notched collar (collar and waistband) but in the second pic it doesn't look like it fits quite as well as the seamed walker in the torso and shoulder.

So sorry you have this need, you are wise to recognize it is important to feel appropriate for somber occasions.

Thanks Angie, I've been leaning toward that one too.

THanks jlpp, rachyou, jenni NZ, Jane,

Emily K I think Jaileen is right about what Suz said about scarves. I live in New England and it's pretty cold here in winter, plus this is not a super warm coat. The second coat could be buttoned up into a "closed" position where the notched collar coat doesn't close completely so a scarf is necessary to fill the gap. I would wear a scarf with either one because the wool of a coat is usually a little rough so a scarf puts a soft layer between it and my neck, and my neck is always cold in winter so a scarf gives more warmth than a crewneck sweater would give, especially if I'm not wearing a hat. I would also happily wear a turtleneck with either coat.

I'm strongly leaning toward #2, will let you know what I decide.

Thanks all for the kind words everyone, as always this is such a lovely and thoughtful community!

Nodding with Angie. The second one looks different in the width of the sleeve and seems to fit much better and the collar does not look bad at all the way you are wearing it!

Emily, I think Suz said that from the perspective of someone in a very very cold climate. Chris lives in a cold climate too. I think a crewneck sweater would be fine if it’s cool but not bitter cold.

As an aside, what is the reason for Suz's comment that the notch collar coat requires a scarf or turtleneck? Is it because the neckline is designed to be open whereas the other can be folded closed for protection from the cold? Or is there some other sartorial "rule" that I've never learned? If cold weren't an issue, would it look weird to have a crewneck sweater underneath?

Notched collar. I can't tell in these photos how these necklines look on you but the notched collar looks more formal. Suz's assessment of the pros and cons of each is so good, and it seems like it could be easier to just have a trustworthy scarf or two.
