A few years ago, the last time when 'short suits' were trending, I saw a lot of thin 20 and 30 somethings in creative fields wear them to work, or just the shorts with a work like button up or blouse. Iirc, the length was more like Bermuda shorts, just above the knee, which is probably more flattering and work appropriate for most.

Anyone remember last summer, I think it was, when some Swedish bus operators protested not being able to wear shorts at work by all the men wearing skirts? It never made sense to me that ladies can wear short skirts to the office in the summer, but guys have to suffer in long pants. Maybe they're the ones that need to have the short suits.

I wear dress shorts, both to work and casually. My field is creative-casual, and my office has no air conditioning to go along with a temperate climate. For work, I pair a dressy summer sweater or blouse with a sassy jacket along with low pumps or boots/booties; for weekend wear, pop on a lightweight fluid sweater/knit top with oxfords or loafers. Keep in mind you don't have to wear both pieces of the suiting together, necessarily. I don't have matching blazers to go along with my shorts, but I have been looking for a white or cream shorts suit for a couple years now which I know I'll wear the heck out of, both together and separated :)

I think if the shorts were longer (the length of bermudas or a bit longer), they'd work really well in a lot of semi-creative fields -- communications, marketing, advertising, designing, and more. A teacher could also wear them. Mid-thigh length would be pretty difficult for most over 30, except for going out, I agree.

They've never made much sense to me, nor matched my lifestyle (not when I worked in an office, and not now that I work for myself) or climate. Summers here are too hot for suit jackets, and winters too cold for shorts, so I always feel a bit of seasonal confusion about this look. Granted, for a more temperate climate and someone who doesn't sweat like I do (but also get goosebumps at the merest chill), perhaps it can be doable without roasting or freezing.

I'm sure someone can make them work (i.e., Anna for going out) but they seem pretty limiting to me. I suppose if you find the right suit with perfect fit in both pieces, you can wear them as separates, so there is that. In my experience, it's really hard to find perfect fit in both pieces of a suit. But if someone here gets one and makes it work, I'd love to see it come together.

I love the idea of dress shorts, especially for the summer. Dinner or a brunch is a great place to wear them. If you're not a skirt person, this is a great option.

I wonder if these are just 'office wear inspired' but meant to be worn out just as chic clothing like Anna says.

I just saw some " dress" shorts getting stocked in a store complete with a matching suit blazer. Colors black or navy.
Problem? Where on earth is a girl supposed to wear them?
The fabric looks/ feels like wear to work business wear. The length of the shorts ( mid thigh)though is Definitely Casual . As in unless you are a grocery cart gatherer,or a UPS man most workplaces and schools are probably going to say go home and change. Or write the person up. Yet these are supposed to be great for the office. What office?
What's even more ironic is that the shorts touted as office appropriate on the stores' site aren't allowable to be worn according to the stores' own fashion retail dress code. Much less a realtor or banker.
I can see doing a evening suiting in shorts ( maybe not for myself but someone else could be quite cute in it) but the thing that makes it work is the formal dressy fabric ( leather, suede, lame ,silk, satin ) not plain business wear fabrics.
Poor wasted fabric! The amateur seamstress in me is not happy at all that fabric fail.
