Yes, it's probably too early to get tickets for some thing...depends what you want to see. If you want to go to the Mirvish musicals then maybe you can get now or at least soon. Other companies to consider include Soul Pepper. Also look at what is playing at the Tarragon.

The Chelsea is great if you're travelling with kids. There's a pool they might enjoy. Location is good -- near Chinatown, walking distance to shopping, U of T campus, etc. October is beautiful in Toronto. Let us know if you are looking for restaurant recommendations, etc. There should be good theatre on. If you are into art, go to the AGO.

I second the Chelsea. Did you look online or call? If you haven't called I would recommend you do that as sometimes the online is not 100 % accurate.

We have stayed at the Chelsea many times. (As well as other hotels in the downtown area). We were able to get a room with a kitchenette. You have to ask for it but it was great for breakfast and lunch. It had a full size refrig, stove, etc.

Una, I did heavily consider an individually owned apartment or condo. I couldn't believe how inexpensive they were! But for this trip I'm looking for the flexibility from a hotel. Maybe we'll arrive at 2am? Maybe we'll cancel with three days' notice? We're unpredictable and unreliable and I'd hate to put out an individual who is already giving up their home.

For central, Lisa's pick is bang on, and Toronto is pretty walkable. The Chelsea is very close to the big downtown mall, and Queen street West has a cool vibe. You could try for last minute theatre tickets, opera, or ballet and I think Toronto Fashion Week is in October.

I kept searching every site and even though the hotel's own site and travelocity both said it was full, I got a room through booking.com. Thank you for the recommendation!

The Chelsea (I think it's a Delta, but it changes brands every few years , lol) downtown is excellent. It's a huge hotel, but so well located (excellent pub right across the cobblestone street ) I stay in it all the time when I have meetings downtown. If you go on Hotwire and call up 4 star hotels in downtown (I think it's West side) , you can get it for super low prices - like $69 a night sometimes. That may not happen it the summer, but it's worth looking into. I'll go on Hotwire and find the exact name (you can always tell which one it is) and give you better info.

Oh, it;s called the Eaton Chelsea Hotel.

Oh, and my kids will be 14 and 19 when we go, and they're reasonably adventurous eaters, so I don't need typical family fare...no water parks or kids' menus necessary. Yes to Broadway style shows and ethnic cuisine!

I'm planning a family trip to Toronto for a 4 day weekend in October. I'm trying to pick a great location that will allow us to step out the front door and walk to dinner or shopping. A couple of times I've booked hotels in other cities thinking the location was great, but we ended up in more of the business district and the only restaurants open past 5pm were super fancy business dinner type places. We're driving, so we will have a car, but we'd much rather leave it parked and walk the city. I know more Canadians on this board than anywhere else in my life, so I thought I'd ask.

Frugal over fancy for this trip. We'd rather save our money for a nice dinner instead of a super fancy hotel, but I do like secure and clean.

Any suggestions?
