Shiny thank you for the help in shopping. Beautiful suggestions. I especially like the first and second with the vertical ruching. Cute, cute, cute.
Julia I'm seeing a bronze dress with cropped jacket rather than a green and purple dress, for the last link.
After all this chat I'm beginning to think I should be looking for a less formal fabric. Maybe cotton for this small town outdoor wedding. I don't want to take a chance on being over dressed.
I am going to make an appt with the personal shopper at Nordstrom's and see what we come up with. I may also order some of these suggested dresses.
I have to remember this is not about me but about the bride. However I know it is resectful to dress in a nice manner for the occasion.
Thank you all for your input helping me sort this out. I've learned a lot here from this chat.
I'll post a picture when I find something.

Shiny, the last one looks fabulous. I love the fabric and how the green and purple mixed together. However the model seems too young to wear that outfit. It's a great suggestion for San.

I believe it's Oprah who defines age appropriateness as being more about quality of the garment, more than anything else. The older you are, the higher the quality should be (within your budget, of course).

As for length of skirts, my legs are great and technically I could still wear above-the-knee lengths, but unfortunately in recent years the skin at my knees has started to show my age. My decollatage is getting that way too, alas! You can really tell my age by looking at my neck and cleavage.

San, if I understand your requirements, you want a skirt that hits at or below the knee, correct? But you don't mind showing your shoulders and arms. And it sounds like you might like to disguise cleavage or neck area a bit? If so, here are some ideas:

Not sure about the sash, but this neckline might be nice:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....&P=10

or this, same idea no sash:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....4&P=9

if you want to disguise your neck, this one is great! This is my fav of all... gorgeous!
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....4&P=9

I like this jacket/sheath combo (and if you keep browsing there are numerous similar examples):
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....4&P=4

If your neck and cleavage aren't a problem, I like this dress. The reason I like it for mature figures is because I think the older we get, the more structure we need, and this has a lot of structure:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....4&P=5

This is my second fav - it's stunning - and has structure plus a jacket:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....4&P=3

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm tempted to order a few to try on, but I think I better go to Nordstrom's and try some on first.
Interesting thread on what to wear at certain ages. I appreciate hearing what you younger ladies think about the issue. Once while shopping at Nordstrom's, I told the young sales associate that I was very interested in age appropriate clothing, jeans, tops, etc. She said for everything made for the younger crowd there is an equal style made for the mature set. I think she meant that maybe the cut would be just a little different but give the same style illusion. Exampe, I certainly wouldn't shop in the BP dept there.
I must confess I wore skirts several inches above the knee well into my 40's. It seemed OK at the time.

San, if you love the J. Crew Sophia dress, it comes in a silk chiffon fabric as well. That would be floatier for daytime, but could also be worn in the evening. I understand what people say when they call it dressy, but I don't think it is too dressy for a wedding. I think of the Sophia as a nice cocktail dress, so any time cocktail attire would be appropriate, the Sophia would work well. I realize your wedding is outside during the day so it might be more casual than cocktail, but that's just my two cents on the dress in general.

Here it is in the chiffon. http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/p.....=cat303194 I actually just bought it in this fabric in the kelly green and it looks great. I have also tried on the silk that you originally posted and adored that fabric.

This J. Crew also looks like a very similar cut, but it has some added fun because of the polka dots and rosette. I don't know if this is a little too embellished for your style, but since the cut was similar I thought you might be interested: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/p.....=cat303191

Hmm...those are interesting points, Maya. I can't think of anything that I love to wear that wouldn't be appropriate to wear at all once I reach a certain age. I think maybe what Angie means is to find the item you love, but in a style that is more suited to your age. An example I can think of is polo shirts. A little pique cotton polo with an alligator/horse/lion/etc on the chest is a very young look, and probably shouldn't be worn after high school/early college. But Nicole (I think) and Tanya both have knit shirts that have a polo-esque feel to them, and both of them look great in those and they are appropriate to their age. I think this is what Angie is talking about. I love loose, blousy babydoll tops, but there are a lot out there that really juvenilize me, and just aren't appropriate for my age and lifestyle. I got rid of a TON of them in the "big edit" I had a few months ago. I didn't completely stop wearing them (I would be so sad), I just have to be much more selective in choosing them (hence my coral J. Crew blouse). Also, I think we (as a society) tend to think of all the things we can't wear/do once we get past "a certain age," but it goes both ways. Think of all the things that look kind of ridiculous on high school/college age girls--power heels, beautifully tailored suits, luxury fabrics, pencil skirts, couture detailing, etc....if I see a younger girl wearing those sorts of things, I think she probably has an interview (and looks really uncomfortable). Whereas I see a more mature woman wearing those and I think, "Dang, she looks good." Know what I mean?

As far as the DVF dress and cap sleeves, I definitely agree with Maya, you definitely have the arms to pull it off, San. Very toned and they look nice. I'm 27 and you have way nicer arms than I do (I avoid cap sleeves). As a rectangle body type, you could also try a knee length sheath dress. I've heard Angie say those are especially nice on rectangles.

Oh, and as someone who lives in Texas, which is the cut-off-denim-miniskirt capital of the world, I think there are very few mini skirts out there that look good on anybody, regardless of age or body type.

Ha, I didn't mean to sound like I wanted to put you in a miniskirt and tube top (I wouldn't put ANYONE in that)...but for example, you can wear the cap sleeves on that DVF dress because your arms are toned, while most women your age (any age really) might be self conscious about that area. You can also wear a very fitted and streamlined dress because 1) you don't have all that many sins to hide and 2) you're a rectangle and it will give you some curves. I think most women your age would shy away from that, and go for something with details that camouflage certain areas of the body.

I haven't decided what to make of Angie's post regarding age appropriateness. I know it was one of the controversial ones. On one hand, it does look weird and kind of creepy to see an older woman in a miniskirt. On the other hand, it probably only looks that way because society has taught us that getting older is something to be afraid and ashamed of, and something we should try to hide and conceal whenever possible, so in a way it's refreshing to see an older woman who is confident enough to wear something that shows off her best assets. Why shouldn't she? If she has great legs, who cares how old she is? I'm 24 and I sure can't wear a miniskirt, so props to her if she can.

I also hate to think that I can't wear something that's flattering on me and that I love just because I turn a certain age. It also might depend on your lifestyle. A woman in her 40's who works at a bar or a nightclub and has no kids might be better posed to wear something a little racy than a schoolteacher with 3 teenage kids. I'm just not sure yet. I doubt I'll really understand it until it becomes an issue for me.

Maya those two dresses you sent the link for are very lovely. I love them both and they do seem age appropriate. I'm not so sure I can wear yellow but I really do love the cut of the dress.
The other is very nice too and I'd like to try them both on. I do have a Nordstroms near so guess I'll go and have a look.
Maya you are very sweet in your compliments. I can't tell you how good that makes me feel. Thank you. However if you saw me in person you might say something like, "You look good for your age", but you would know what my general age is.
I read somewhere recently, as an example, (it could have been from Angie) that no matter how good of shape your legs might be in you should have your skirts at an age apprpriate lenght. No mini skirts after a certain age. That gives me a vision of seeing a gal with beautiful legs in a mini skirt and then she turns around and you realize she is an older woman and something just seems wrong and creepy. Know what I mean?

Hi Maya-Hmm...where else do I recommend? I completely agree that its hard to find stylish items in our 50's that are great but not too young. I think I feel even more challenged given that I live in a small town in IN where my shopping options are VERY limited. We don't even have one decent consignment shop. only 2 boutiques (where a XL is a size 10 in their view and prices are very high), a pretty awful Macys and a good B. Rep. So what I do is pick certain pieces in my favorite lines: INC for tops and jackets, Nine West for most of their dresses, tops, sweaters and skirts and B. Rep. for everything as I said. I try to get to Chicago often so at Nordstroms I like Caslon, A. Papall, Maggie London, Suzi Chin when I can find sales. Hopes this helps. I am always open to suggestions/advice so if any of have other ideas on stores/clothing lines for women over age 45, PLEASE pass them on.

As for wrap dresses, I'm the exception to the rule. The part that ties never hits me at the right part of the waist, which can yield some pretty unflattering results.

San, you have a better body than most 30 year olds I know of. I think you can get away with more than the average 50-something, though obviously not so much that you would feel uncomfortable. I think something like this would be fine:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....4&P=1

You can wear a cami underneath for coverage up top if you want.

This one is fairly modest and has the minimalist style you like, and is cut very straight and form-fitting, which is perfect for rectangles:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....2&P=1

I just looked through some of the Nordstrom dress site. Whew! There's a lot of them. I see that most of them show a lot of skin up top and at the leg. Where does a 53 year old find a modest and pretty dress that doesn't look too matronly?
I'll check out the BR site as Nancy suggested.
Thanks

One more idea...I love most of the clothing at B. Republic. I think you get alot of style for the price. I am 50 so some things are obviously too young and about a size 14 so don't fit into everything. However I find enough there to keep me quite happy. I recently bought the same knit empire dress in a beautiful green and in black. Wore the green one to a wedding with heels and jewlery and a pashmina and felt the outfit was appropriate. Also could wear either dress with flats and a cardigan and it would be a casual look. Wanted to share this other shopping option that has worked for me after reading Ana's great advice to look for a dress that you can dress up or down and really wear and not just let it hang in the closet for special occasions. I am often guilty of doing that and trying to do better in this area. Good luck in your shopping adventure.

A lot of the J. Crew dresses are available in "Cotton Cady" fabric, which is a refined cotton twill. I have a dress from J. Crew that is in this fabric (solid navy), and I am planning on wearing it with a sweater and belt layered over it this fall. If I wanted to dress it up to wear to a more formal occasion, I could probably do that too, so it's very versatile.

Of course, you can't go wrong with Diane von Furstenberg, and Nicole's suggestion of heading to a local department store (Macy's, Nordstroms) is a good idea as well. It would be nice if you could get something that would be appropriate to wear as an "everyday" summer dress as well, rather than something that sits in your closet only for special occasions.

San, I thought that first jcrew dress was beautiful, but when I wanted to see it in a different color, I realized how dressy it is. That style in a different fabric might be what you're looking for.

What kind of department stores do you have in your area? I think a day of trying on dresses is in order! Since you know you want to wear flats, maybe you should buy the shoes first, and shop with them so you know the dress will work with the shoe. (Some dresses just look weird with flats.) That may be a little backwards...buying the dress to go with the shoes, but it will narrow down your dress options.

Christie, I can see now that the 'Sophia' dress on the J Crew site is quite dressy. I probably should be looking for something in a more casual fabric for day time. I bet that was a lovely wedding dress for you. So simple and well made and beautiful. Great choice.
You all have great advice.

Thanks for the help everyone. The dresses in the links that you sent Julia are very cute but I'm looking for something a little longer. I think it would be more age appropriate.
I will check out the other websites recommended here. I can't wait to have a look at the DVF dresses that everyone raves about.
It's great Nancy that you have a DVF dress that is still in style after many years. That is really getting your money's worth.
Maya I loved your post on creating the beautiful silhouette. I get all excited about very simple well made clothing with a lovely silhouette and didn't even know it was a good thing instead of just boring.

Hi Maya-I guess I should have say that I think almost every woman can look good in a wrap dress and I think that DVF wraps are wonderful. They are a classic dress.; but are expensive and I know that is a stretch for most of us; espec. fresh out of college. Its just such a classic and honestly the one I have from many many years ago is still completely in style today (wish I could fit into it now). So if the DVF isn't in your budget now look for a similar style in perhaps Nine West or BCBG; I often see those on sale at Nordstrom.com If I was younger I would def. wear the one I have with skinny jeans (providing I got the approval from my friends in this forum).

San, with your rectangle shape a shift dress should look great on you. Something like the following:

http://www.bananarepublic.com/.....pid=574996
http://www.anntaylor.com/catal.....35227b6dc0

Pair it with a structured straw bag and wedges, you should be good to go.

Nancy, why do you recommend that as a must? I'm curious because i am almost done with college (well, I already have my BFA but I'm doing a second degree). I can't imagine that being in any fresh graduate's budget, though I guess it does depend on their major.

Hi San,

I wouldn't recommend either of those dresses you posted. The first is actually my wedding dress! It is quite dressy--maybe too dressy for a summer wedding, unless it is an evening affair. I think the second dress is too suit-y for a wedding.

Have you looked at espritshop.com? They do not have as good a selection as Macy's or Nordstrom's, but they do have some simple, cute dresses. I would recommend going online at macy's which has an enormous selection of fun dresses.

Good Morning-Just a few other ideas, altho I echo if DVF is in your price range I would vote for her dresses. I work with college students and ALWAYS recommend one of her wrap dresses as a must as they build their post college wardrobes. I also like the dresses from (all avail. at Nordstroms.com) Suzi Chin (both her own and a line she makes for Maggy Boutique), Adrianne Papall and have just discovered some great dresses Terri Jon. You can google the name or begin at Nordstroms.com where as an earlier poster said you can look at dresses by body type, occasion or designer.

Hope this helps a bit. FYI Nordstroms seems to carry a ton more dresses on line than in their stores; at least that is true for the ones in the midwest.

I don't think your style is boring at all. I'm a sucker for a beautiful silhouette. See below:

http://bp3.blogger.com/_qjpwnP.....Fjulia.jpg

"Everyone knows I love the little details but sometimes the little details are less important than the overall silhouette.

I think this is a perfect example - the pleating details are only important for the overall shape that it gives the skirt. Any additional hardware or trims would just distract from the simple, beautiful lines." (this was written by Sart, not me, but I couldn't have worded it better)

That dress is more of an office dress, I think. I would not go that direction. The key to minimalist style is that everything must fit perfectly, like it was made for you. Since your style is so minimal, your own features really become the accessories, which can be great, but it also means paying a lot of attention to detail: eyebrows, hair, nails, skin, and makeup should all be impeccable. I really admire this style actually. I'm always impressed by people who can make a big statement with very little material to work with. I can't do it myself so I guess I'm more impressed than most.

I have very boring taste. Angie says I have understated style. I just love beautifully made clothing. I wouldn't mind help in sparking it up a bit.

DVF can be found at Nordstrom. If you can afford it, it would definitely offer you some fabulous choices. Nordies in general should have lots of dresses. There is actually a way to narrow down your choices by body type. I also really like Marc Jacobs dresses (the cheaper variety, of course).

Do any of you have suggestions on where I might start my search for a dress to wear to a summer day outdoor wedding in June. I am 53, 5'8" rectangle. I read here some talk about Diane Von Furstenburg (not sure of the spelling of her name) dresses being so beautiful. Do you find those at Macy's or a certain website?
I just looked at the Anthropology website and the dresses seem a bit more for younger gals.
I would like something cute and age appropriate of course, not to much skin showing. I might possibly want to wear a flat metalic sandal since heals might be trouble on grass.
Thankyou for any suggestions guiding me in the right direction.
