Thank you all for these suggestions! I wasn't thinking of this as a shopping weekend, but we'll probably do a tiny bit of shopping since I'll be missing the DC YLF meetup...

When I lived in New York I did major damage at the DKNY store in Soho. When there's a sale it's great.
Edit
There's a fantastic and expensive French costume jewelry store next to DKNY, the name escapes me at the moment.

I believe the following captures SO's policies regarding shopping.

If it's for me, it's an adventure and anything goes (isn't that a wonderful quality?) including sitting in the "husband chair" outside the fitting-room area for endless amounts of time. Thank goodness for iPhones. :)

If it's for him, on the other hand, there should be no setting foot in a store, no chatting with sales personnel, and no tape measure applied to any limbs. Clothing should be deposited on the doorstep by silent elves, should fit, and should be recognizable as something that grown men in the business world have worn for a minimum of several generations.

Sorry for my awful grammar. I'm phone typing on the train.

I think there is a Hugo Boss if SO is interested in that (he sounds like a fancy man). And of course there is Bloomingdales.

< It's basically a big shopping mall. >

That's extremely helpful, Maya! Our hotel is, I think, across the street from the Guggenheim, but that's all I knew about the area. Now that I have some google-able shops, I'll map it all out.

And I'll be shopping with SO, who likes the doormen-and-tissue-paper places that I would never frequent on my own, so it's good to know what's in the vicinity.

Um, everywhere we went at our last gathering--oh wait, you weren't there :p

honestly, if you just get off at broadway-Lafayette on the 6 train and cross Houston street (where SOuth of HOuston street officially begin), you will have the world as your oyster. Off the top of my head: zara, esprit, two h&ms, mango, banana republic, Ann Taylor, uniqlo, topshop...ok, some of these are not April stores but they're what I know best...

If you deviate from broadway a bit, there is an Anne Fontaine boutique and also Karen Millen and lots of fancier places where they have doormen and wrap your purchases in tissue paper. There are also Tory Burch and Nanette Lepore boutiques in the vicinity. I recommend strolling through Nolita for more privately owned goods and services. Including that store I wanted to race to with Angie and Laura--Frocks.

Realistically though, all you have to do is get off the train or cab and walk around. It's basically a big shopping mall.

Have fun!

SO and I are planning a weekend in New York and we'll be staying at the Mercer Hotel, which is in SoHo.

My knowledge of NYC is limited and while SO knows New York very well, his knowledge of shopping is limited.

Can anyone recommend good shopping in the SoHo area? We'll also be on the Upper East Side for dinner one night.
