I'm glad someone linked to Lisa Eldridge's videos because they are great. I've learned so much from her. I never had much luck at MAC (standalone store) ; although their products are high quality, I always ended up looking very done, which is not my vibe.

I agree that the folks at sephora are helpful although I've never had a real makeover there, just someone who would suggest products for a particular need.

I agree with K and like going to Sephora because of the wider range of brands. I usually do a little research online into products that look like they might work for me, then ask for samples of them when I go into the store. I find that no matter how good a product looks, if it doesn't work with my skin, it's a no go. I try to focus on one or two things at time. The consultants will also recommend products, so I usually try those too.

Great topic! I always have liked and used makeup. I remember being a little upset that I couldn't get my Mom to try eye shadow and mascara, lol! And years ago, before my middle daughter got married, she and I went to a Clinique counter and had our makeup done. I got a marvelous lipstick that I probably wouldn't have chosen for myself.

I think I'd like to get a consultation again, soon. I think that as you age, the shades of your skin change, as does the hair if you aren't coloring (I don't). I've watched a ton of YouTube videos (I really like PixiWoo's, some of GoldenGirl's, and Goss Makeup Artist, oh, and Eve Pearl). Using bronzer along the perimeter of my face, and finding a good, SMALL brush to apply the bronzer with, has really helped improve the look of my face, I think. But I could use some tips about bronzers because the two I have bought (Physician's Formula, and ... hmm, not sure at the moment whose the other one is) seem to create a lot of dust before they make it to my face!

I had not thought of ULTA, but that or Sephora would probably be good picks I think -- I feel really "on display" at the other counters, which intimidates me, but maybe I can talk my daughter into repeating our "date."

The Shoppers Drug Mart beauty specialists are good for a new eyeliner and application for example but I find the one in my area somewhat limited in what they can offer. They also have different consultants come in from different companies every so often but I find them a bit pushy.
I find the Christian Dior consultants very good at the Bay. They also have consultants come in every so often and do make-ups.
Both of these services are offered for free.
I find it helpful to say that I won't be buying today but want to live with the look and analyze before I come back and spend. You don't get as many free samples that way. I also find the Mac consultants at the Bay very good.
Of course they are selling their brand of product but the regular beauty consultants at Shoppers aren't so may help steer you to certain products and then you can get a true make-over when that brand consultant visits at either the Bay or Shoppers to try out their products.
I find the same incoming consultants spend more time with you and are more personable at the Bay...

Department stores or other shops often have free makeup makeovers, or you can hire a makeup expert to give you a whole new look. Every time I've tried this, I've been disappointed. I don't wear much makeup, but finally figured out what looks best on me by reading various books on makeup. Sorry, but I cannot remember the names of them, only that one of them was by Bobbie Brown. When I had a professional consultation, I looked very made up and, to my eye, very unappealing. I think it's much better to practice in private with a good mirror and good light.

My personal opinion, which many may not agree with, is that less makeup is better. Too much simply makes you look old and greasy. It's important to remember that most makeup experts are in the business of selling more makeup.

I actually had this done just today, in fact! I went to a local spa that sells natural and organic makeup. You could get an hour-long lesson in makeup application for $75, but they will let you have the lesson for free if you buy $75 worth of product. Kind of a no-brainer!

I'm very glad that I went, because I don't know anything about makeup. I haven't worn makeup for probably twenty years, and even back when I did wear makeup, no one had taught me how to put it on, so I didn't do much (a little concealer on blemishes, a little clear mascara, some blush, and that was pretty much it). So I learned tons. Back when I was younger, eye makeup pretty much consisted of eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara, and a "natural" look wasn't considered all that important. Now there are a lot of blending techniques for the eyelid, where you don't even need to use eyeshadow per se but can use blush, highlighter, and other things. I would never have been able to figure that out on my own.

I wish I had known more about makeup before I had gone in, because I discovered that I should have asked for waterproof mascara--apparently the steam from having to breathe into my scarf when the temps are so cold made my mascara flake and smudge like crazy! But I called the spa, and they got in touch with the gal who did my makeup, and she said they have a water-resistant type I could try instead.

For me, the benefit of going to the spa was that the person who did my makeup knows me now, and I can call with questions specifically related to my own skin, and they can give appropriate feedback. And since they carry a few different lines of product, they can recommend whatever they carry that is best and not be limited to selling a single line.

The downside--but I think this will happen anywhere--is that you never know whether the same look can be had with other products for less. I ended up spending $175 on product, but I had to buy EVERYTHING, including brushes, since I had next to no makeup (I had only one compact). And the spa I went to carries only natural and organic lines, which are horribly expensive. But I can't do chemicals. The good news is that I need very little of what was recommended, so I would not be surprised if I can get a year's worth out of what I bought. And I am not the type to be changing my makeup up frequently, so a handful of high-quality pieces is all I need.

I think that in a perfect world, it would be great to go to a few places for a consult and then see which look you like best and also the price points and then go from there. I was limited because of the chemical sensitivities and also because of my lack of knowledge. But you have to start somewhere.

I have also had success here in Canada at Shoppers Drug stores. My local one has a huge makeup area with beauticians on staff. They carry a nice assortment of brands and they are above the usual drugstore offerings although they are on offer as well. Like Gaylene I wandered in when it was quiet and asked for some help choosing a lighter foundation. I ended up with a Smashbox primer product that I love and never would have tried if I hadn't ventured to ask for some help. I always say I have to check in my own mirror at home if I have any doubts on whether I want to purchase and I find that they seem very comfortable with that.

It's kind of weird how I am going for a more "no makeup" look as I age but I'm accumulating more products.

I've been thinking about this alot lately. Lord knows I could use a tune up. WARNING: Rant Ahead. What bothers me is...I'm not make-up literate. I don't know what is offered or what I need. I have no clue which line would be best for me..or if I would do better to pick and choose from different lines. But, best as I can tell..when you go to the MAC counter, they are MAC salespersons. They're not gonna tell you that another line might suit you better. So..., I haven't found a MAC foundation that suits my coloring...they're all too yellow. The guy at the YSL counter was a joke...visiting friends. I felt I was intruding on his social life. But! they don't take me over to another line that might suit me better. I would like to find a place that offers everything...
I know Sephora does this a bit, but their offerings are limited, at least in my area. I just wish that a complete newbie could go find what works best for them in one place. I've gone into Nordstrom a couple of times with the intent to find what I need..and spend the $$ to get it. But I leave feeling defeated and just really not wanting to go back and try again. So...I continue with my drugstore brands. I just wish I could find someone that would educate me and point me in the right direction.

Not that I am the make up maven at all. I had a most wonderful young man at our local Sephora suggest colors for me and he nailed it. I loved that he didn't really push anything. I ended up with a blush, a light bronzer and a lip pencil. And he gave me lots of advice.

I go for mini tune ups when I see the people at the counters or shops aren't busy. Usually I end up with someone young enough to be my granddaughter who is wearing a face full of makeup but they are usually very sweet and really excited to see a senior woman who wants their advice--and that's usually how I'll put it-- something along the lines ""Could you give me some help with blush/eyebrow pencils/lip stains (or whatever); I'm just not used to wearing ___ but I think I might want try it--what do you think?"

Every time I've used this approach, they cluster around discussing what to do, get busy on my face, give me tons of tips and advice, and load me up with samples before letting me go. I think working on me is compensation for them not being listened to by their mothers because I get a lot of "I wish my mom would at least try...."

I must admit, though, many of these young women know their stuff. One unerringly picked out the perfect lip color for me from a huge display at the MAC counter while another tutored me in how to use an eyebrow pencil. At the Bobbi Brown counter, I had three of them discussing the perfect blush for my skin tone and provided with exact lessons on how to apply it. I've learned to dab, blend, line, shade--you name it--but I've never felt pressured to buy anything (although I usually do since I'm assuming many are on commission) and I always get free samples with the suggestion "to just try this..."

I'd try Ulta or Sephora. I feel like they have a better range of products than a regular make-up counter. I've learned that I have to mix brands to find the stuff that works best for me. An example is I love BareMinerals foundation, but I'm allergic to their primer, so I use Benefit's.

I need to do this too.

I used to be a MAC girl until they changed their concealer and powder colors and I no longer got a match to my skin. I use Aveda concealer and dual base powder and I'm really happy with both (although they could be less expensive), but I just use whatever in terms of lips and eyes, and it doesn't usually have staying power.

I didn't know about the $50 min purchase. I went for my first dept store makeup consultation last week at MAC in Nordstrom, and they never mentioned it, odd. Of course, I ended up spending 4x that!

So, I asked for a no makeup look and I left feeling like a clown. It might have been the person who applied the makeup, she had a heavy hand. I still bought the products, however, because I figured I could play around at home. And I did like how she did my eyes.

But next time, I'm going to try Sephora. I figure they have access to a wider range of all products and thus I can get "best of breed" instead of all products from a single line. But my Sephora is always packed, so I need to find a day when I can go in at 10 am.

Just my two cents for you! Good luck and have fun!

I have had pretty good luck at MAC. I use a few of their products already so if I don't like the new me I just buy the old reliables. For me that is "Coquette" shadow for brows and "Plumful" lipstick, a great shade for a true "Winter". I also like the makeup brushes, expensive but they last.

I like Bobbi Brown! If you are just looking for some fresh colors, even their online consultation is decent. Sounds fun - enjoy!!

I marched into Sephora on my birthday and whimsically selected the artist most unlike me. The tall guy with the bright red afro helped me find a perfect foundation, Makeup Forever HD, and an oil makeup remover, Nude. A lesson too. It was so much fun and he treated me like a star. Keep it lighthearted and go for it!

our MAC counter will do a complete makeover as long as you buy $50 worth of products. Totally worth doing if you are in the market for new makeup anyway.

My trusty Revlon eyeshadow quad broke at some point last week and I am taking that as a sign that I should assess my make-up routine. I had been thinking about trying a Sephora makeover, or maybe a consultation at MAC or the Clinique counter (I am very happy with their skincare line!) Of course, some salons and spas in the area offer a makeup lesson + application service, as well.

Has anyone had any experience with these sorts of services? Any advice or experiences to share?
