There was an article in the NYTimes recently all about vintage shops. They have highly curated collections, everything is pristine, on trend and probably pricey. But it might fit the bill for you.

For New York I've heard great things about Beacon's Closet. You could also try Buffalo Exchange.

Every once in a while I get the vintage shopping bug, but more often than not I just end up with something costumey and worm-eaten. I think for now I'd like to put my dreams of twirling around in 50's dresses aside, and focus on the other enjoyable aspects of vintage shopping, like finding really, really good deals. The only nearby shop that fits the bill is Housing Works, but Plato's closet is an even better example of the kind of shop I'm looking for. It's a shop that sells absolutely no actual vintage goods, and instead focuses on very recent, name-brand, gently used goods. Unfortunately there are none in my area. So do you have any suggestions for where to buy contemporary pre-owned clothing? Sites are ok, but if you have any brick and mortar shops in mind, I live in Jersey city. It's within easy driving distance from nyc, which is presumably a goldmine for pre-owned and vintage goods, if only I knew where to go.
