Look for a coat that has angora. I recently got one (consignment) that looks similar to the one from your first link and am surprised at how warm it turned out to be. It's also long, so it covers my legs, which helps in terms of keeping warm.

If you want something good, that really combats the cold, then I can only recommend a Canada Goose http://www.canada-goose.com/ . They are expensive but well worth it, and not slouchy.

Hi Eden, my first dilemma about your question is what kind of needs your coat is for? Everyday, dressy, casual, everything? What kind of weather? Do you commute by public transport or by car?

I have looked at two coats and they both suggest you like tailored items with well defined silhouette, although they are both very very different. The first one is very ladylike and dressy, probably best to have as spare but not for everyday use, especially if you're on the bus, tram or underground. However, you say it's not warm enough, so all we know is this is the silhouette you like :-)

The second one is beautiful coat and more for everyday use, but you say it's flimsy. I think with 80% wool you'll hardly get much better fabric in terms of the composition and warmth.

This means you might consider a down coat (I strongly suggest down, not polyester fillings, the warmth is nowhere near comparable). Or, keep searching for a tailored coat, but size it in a way to be able to layer another jacket underneath. Here is Angie's blog post with advice and here is a good example of her client wearing coat over the jacket.

I think Louise's suggestion is great regarding TXMaxx, it's a treasure trove, however I'd suggest knowing what you want before you embark on the search there because it is overwhelming. Personally, If you like Hobbs and Jogsaw, I would recommend giving Debenhams a chance - I liked their own collection called just that - Collection - they always have some nice stuff in classic bordering modern cuts, which seems to be what you're after.

No puffers for me. I live in Southwestern Ontario/Canada. Average daily temperature in winter is -6 (celcius), but we easily hit -10 or below. I wear a just-above-knee length coat that is 70% Wool 30% polyester in most winter weather with warm hat + gloves, long underwear underneath if necessary (not often). I think wool is the key to a warm non-puffer coat.

Waving from the Midlands.
Have you tried TKMaxx? I found a lovely red coat which was 80% wool with a quilted lining. I haven't road tested it for warmth yet as my puffer is so warm and snug I haven't been able to face leaving the house without it for weeks now x

Ya, I wear puffer coats. Even in summer. If I'm going out, I suffer a bit and wear my grandmother's coat from the 1950s (they made them better then, I swear) or one of two a fur-lined/sheep-fuzz (what is the word for sheep fuzz?) suede coats I have.

If I feel brave enough to take on PETA, I wear this fake fur I have from Target. It's rather bulky.

Living on the Wisconsin tundra I don't find wool coats all that warm either, unless they are boiled wool, or very tightly woven to be windproof, and have some sort of insulation layer such as thinsulate. I would LOVE to find a shearling coat -- those are warm! Scandinavians swear by their sealskin coats, illegal in the US but supposedly sustainably/humanely hunted there.

Sorry I don't know UK stores, but my warmest coats are from Eddie Bauer and they are all down filled. Wool coats work for me on cooler days but really cold winter days I need the down coats.

I wish I could tell you the answer but I desperately need to know as well. Having spent a large part of my childhood in Hong Kong, I am extremely susceptible to the cold and have a hard time in the Canadian winter. I wear puffers everyday because they're practical and light. However, if there is a special occasion I would layer shirt, blazer/sweater(s) with my thickest wool coat. Still not for extended periods outdoor though.

Well, I wear my Gloverall duffle coat that I purchased in the UK a few years ago in -15C/5F weather in Canada. I do wear it with a jumper, scarf, hat, and gloves, though, and the duffle coat is definitely a more casual look. To be honest, if the temperature goes down much further than that, I pull out my Canada Goose 3/4 down parka--freezing is not fashionable IMO.

Only half joking here...come to Canada; we have a wide variety of nice looking wool coats that are warmer! It's a necessity in the climate.

Actually, most people wear puffers when it is really cold. But my Hilary Radley wool/ alpaca coat, definitely keeps me warm in sub-zero temperatures. Admittedly, I will layer it over a blazer or sweater, plus shirt, plus cami, often with a scarf as well. So it doesn't have to do the job on its own.

I'm sorry I can't give you specific retailers for the warmest coat, but unless you're interested in puffer coats or jackets, I don't think there's a nice looking coat warm enough by itself to suffice! I live in NYC and winters get pretty cold here, I avoid puffers as much as possible because of the unflattering silhouette, so like to layer with a thermal cami top and a full sleeved pullover under my heavy wool coat.

I really like the black coat you own in the first link, very chic!

I have this coat (Hobbs, last winter) http://i279.photobucket.com/al.....jacobs.png which I adore, but it's not very warm at all. The trouble is: I feel like most coats on the high street aren't! This looked promising on the site http://www.jigsaw-online.com/h.....oduct/5309 but also turned out to be rather flimsy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to look for a well-made, heavier-weight winter coat?

I'm based in the UK. Looking for black, tweed, herringbone, chequered, or possibly ink blue or moss green/olive.
