1, 3, and the "Chevron" outfits are my favorites - you look fresh, modern and stylish... just like your hair! I have a poison eye for high-vamp athletic shoes, I've realized, so I find myself wanting to change your beige shoes to something with a low vamp - ballet pumps, an almond-toe flat, or something like Jack Purcells (or your Converse). This might just be my personal taste, however, and practical (and budgetary considerations) may also come into play.

Thanks, Parsley and Laura! You are both so nice.

@Parsley: I found the white sweater at TJMaxx. It’s by Jeanne Pierre--a brand I’ve never heard of but I liked the v-neck and the mesh. The hem is vented and slightly high low so it seemed more trendy than a regular sweater. I love the coverage too. 100% cotton so hard to go wrong.

@Laura: Yes, we’ve had a few “shorts” days but the last few have been windy and cool. I’m back in pants--chinos, to be exact I also think it’s a bit warmer down my way--out here in the boon docks!

First off, I can't believe you've been wearing shorts! I hope it's been less windy for you than me, because I've been freezing even though its supposedly in the 70s most days now.

I agree with everyone else, there's something about the way you style these outfits that makes them great, even though most of the pieces are classic. and I really like the chinos - they are definitely coming back into style and they suit you to the ground.

You are so funny, Kelly! I've never, EVER seen you look frumpy!

These outfits are no exception. You look casual, but stylish and fabulous in all of them.
I have a poison eye for chinos, but you carry them off well. I love the white sweater- what is it? It works well with all your bottoms.
You look great in sneakers, and ready for anything life sends your way.

There's nothing wrong with casual when it's done like this.
You have great style!

A million thanks to all of you for making me feel less frumpy. Simple outfits and sensible shoes have been making me feel less than stellar. It seems a fine line between casual and frumpy. Thanks for embracing the gas station pants too. I was so hoping this looked current because I love them as a jean alternative. They are slouchy and comfy and have a great relaxed, tomboy vibe. I will be wearing them a lot this summer.

@sarah: I’m glad I’m not alone. I have to say that your RR stripe chinos are exactly how I want to look in chinos--hip and fun. I’m loving the break from jeans and those chinos are so comfy. I just couldn’t tell if it looked current on me (part of it is my age and negative associations I have with chinos in general.) I agree with the wider belt too--I hardly have any that fit around that part of my abdomen. I spied an orange one at Gap that I am planning on ordering. I wish Gap listed the width but it looks wider than my yellow one.) Will try the pants with one more roll :)

@Rose and Joan, Shannon, Ingunn, hedgiehog, Jenava, Thistle, Alicat, annaj, Joy, Makrame, : Thank you!

@Peri: Thank you. Your question really resonated with me. I loved reading the responses. I’m glad that you posted it!

@Jules and Firecracker: Thank you for pointing out the subtle on trend elements. I really hadn’t thought about them like that. I half tuck without thinking these days and Firecracker, you are absolutely right about the footwear. I only wear my running shoes to run--Lol!

@Suz: Yes! You understand about casual dressing. I think it’s so hard to feel stylish when the outfits are so stylish and somewhat repetitive. Thanks for them mesh sweater love. I ended up getting this one before the Gap one came. Of course, with me and white, I will be keeping both. Not sure how long they will last before the next major spill/stain.

@pil: Thank you! I agree about the footwear. It was a soccer weekend--uneven grass/dirt fields so the Cons were the best option. I figure I will never look any worse than this--any other shoe can only look better.

@Sveta: Thank you. I’m sure I could if I tried :)

@Mia: Thank you. I know, I saw Dickies somewhere recently too. I think they are kind of hip in the skater community.

@Angie: Thank you! I’m so relieved. I’m glad you like the longer hair. I haven’t had it this length for awhile but am enjoying it. My hairdresser says the medium length shag is kind of in right now--certainly easy to style.

@Shevia: Thank you! I think you are right about the chinos but I really wanted some non-jean pant options. I will keep these full length but change out the footwear to make them look more hip and less Chevron!

@AJ: LOL! I know. In the picture it looks almost scandalous but it didn’t look that way IRL. DD’s would have given me major grief if they thought it was see through--well, at least I hope so. I will wear this with a cami from now on though, just to be safe! Thanks!

Well I was looking hard for this frumpiness that you speak of but the only thing I was able to notice is that the first outfit in the first picture needs a cami unless that's a bikini top you are sporting as you head to the pool. In that case, I would call that sassy. :)

Oh, dear, no offense, but you don't know frump!
I know what you mean about feeling less stylish in some footwear--for you, it sounds like it's closed-toe footwear in general that make you feel a little off your style game. But these outfits are not frumpy looking. Your styling of the chino pants and shorts is current, because of the fit of the pants, the tops you've chosen, the way you wear them (faux semi tuck; rolls, cuffs, and slouch; flattering layered silhouettes; well chosen belts; and yes, the footwear.
The shoes in photos 1 and 3 in the first set and 1 in the second set are the most casual of them all, I think, but they look like street sneakers, not athletic shoes. That's a key point in my mind; it says that you deliberately put on a stylish pair of shoes to go with your casual outfit (as opposed to wearing the same shoes you work out in, because you really don't care about the outfit).

These are all great looks. I really like the way you wear your "gas station pants"--ha! a funny reference--you've given them that cool tomboy/boyfriend vibe with the slouch at the ankle. And the oxfords with the clamdiggers and white sweater--I'd like to copy that one (if only I could)!

You know what else prevents you from frumpness, even if you want to try for it? Your great hair style. It is so flattering and spunky, and it looks congruent with the freshness of your overall style.

Hope this helps you feel brighter, as you await warmer days when the toes can come out.
The white open weave sweater is smashing on you every which way, you look good in every length jeans/pants and your shoes are fab! As for the chinos, I like them but I think they would look good as bermudas too if DH's comment has tainted them for you.

You don't look frumpy in the least. But I understand exactly what you are saying. How to stave off boredom (which tends to translate into feeling frumpy) when you are dressing casually day after day? Honestly, if I had the answer to this one, I'd be a billionaire.

My faves here are 1, 5, 7, and 8/9. The chinos look good to me.
LOL, Kelly, you had me chuckling with the title - that's exactly how I feel lately. However, please do rest assured that you could never in a million years look frumpy. You look fabulously and stylishly casual, as always! I love your sneaker collection! (You've got to have the best darn collection of casual footwear). Everything looks great. OK, if I were splitting hairs, I might roll the white clams one more time and wear a wider belt with the navy chinos - do you think that would make the look more deliberate?

I've been busy and haven't had time to keep up on the forum and I'm afraid it is affecting my style. Peri posted about looking good vs. being in style and I'm hoping that I'm in the former camp since I'm definitely not in the latter. The weather has been a little cool for spring and I've needed closed toe footwear (so I haven't been able to use funky footwear to elevate an outfit.) In particular, I'm wondering whether my navy khaki pants are a disaster. DH says they remind him of the Dickie's he used to wear (as a teen) while pumping gas at the Chevron! I wear them anyway but am I heading into frumpville the way I styled them? They look immensely better pushed up with sandals but it was too cold in the am to do so. Please let me know if I am heading into dangerous territory.

Thanks in advance!
