Oh bummer! I didn’t realize it paywalled, Sarah. It was a brief post about historic Scandinavian fisherman’s sweaters. Thank you for the message

Janet, yes! You have your color palette SO dialed in and those jewel tones suit you so well. I imagine it can be hard to find "spring" feeling items in your preferred palette, especially with that little bit of edge, but as you say -- makes it easier to walk away when something isn't for you!

thanks Kate!

Angie thanks for the vote of confidence! And yes, I'll keep the cream quilted jacket out and see how it fits in too.

Ket oh drat, I can't seem to access your friend's article. But that is a gorgeous sweater on your to-knit list! PM-ing you.

How fun! I can see this working so well for you. I like the relaxed and outdoorsy nature of this vibe. It’s so smart to draw inspiration that incorporates your color palette that you already own. I know exactly what you mean about the traditional “spring” color palette and how it doesn’t necessarily resonate with you. I have the same issue. I looked at some cute items yesterday but ultimately only a small fraction of the colors the retailers put out in spring actually are ones I enjoy wearing. Cuts my temptation!

Ok I'm finally back!

Angie, I forgot to respond to your comment about toppers. I was talking mostly about indoor toppers, i.e., cardis to wear over my abundant blue tops. You can see what I mean about the fitted, blazer-style cut in that last set of winter outfits -- I'm wearing the shorter black cardi from that post today, and it's ok but not ideal -- the waist shaping and curved/cutaway hem take the outfit in more of a Dark Academia direction. Ideally the topper would be a bit more boxy.

For outerwear, I think my spring staples will be my bright navy waterproof parka and my pink puffer vest, with an occasional appearance from my blue gear puffer. Also I have a quilted chore jacket in chambray blue on the way, fingers crossed it works!

Dee thank you for the positive comments! I will leave the tailored looks to you, I never feel quite right in them. Horses for courses and that's a good thing!

Sal oh how fun to see your potential fisherwoman capsule. You are my early-austral-autumn colleague! Would love to see how the outfit you mentioned for this weekend turns out if you do end up wearing it.

Bonnie ohhh I can see those loose dress looks on you! I'm not 100% sure I have the items required at the moment but hey, it's something new to try for next year.

JenniNZ, haha, the Medieval Tavern Owner was definitely not a deliberate choice but something I bumbled into...I am happy to back away!

Brooklyn I have heard of Seasalt but haven't checked them out in a while...will do so! Also great idea to about how to incorporate sequins. A mesh top could also be an allusion to netting! And now I'm thinking...metallic bits = bioluminescence?

Kellygirl I'm officially declaring it Clog Girl Spring!

Lisa, thank you for these thoughtful comments! I can see tans and khakis working well here too. Those are not my best colors near my face but definitely can do some work on my bottom half...

Suz oh good to have the voice of experience giving a vote of confidence to the sequins idea! I will see what I can do about pulling together an illustration of my "capsule." I am definitely taking outfit snaps which I'll share once I have a critical mass.

Ket you get me! I'm glad this is getting your wheels turning too! Yeah I am pretty sure I have a whoooooole bunch of knitting pattern images pinned to my fashion boards...Thank you for the links, those are really beautiful! Even though I don't knit I have a couple of books about fair isle knitting that I like to look at to learn more about the history and the process. I'm contemplating this book about Norwegian Fisherman knits, it sounds like it has a lot of background information. Love to nerd out about knitwear even though I don't make it myself!

Thank you Runcarla, Jaime, Sharan, Sisi, RobinF, OliveGreen!

OMGGGGGGG! I love this aesthetic for you and I love it in general too. I'm so excited for you, Sarah! It has my knitting brain all agog too I have always had a little fantasy crush on this kind of aesthetic. It has a British/Scandinavian flair to it that engages me. I love all the knits you chose, though I'm particularly fond of 4 and 14. (Quite sure 14 is a knitting pattern I've seen from one of the Scandinavian designers I follow on social media; 21 is a Marie Wallin pattern.) I'm also loving the tartan skirt in 39.

Great hair, scarf, and shoe choices too!

Even though you don't knit, you might really love the photography and designs of American-Irish knitwear designer Ailbiona McLochlainn. (She is American who married an Irishman, and now lives in Ireland.) Here are links for a lookbook she created for one of her designs (one of my favorites of hers), as well as her blog. You may find her knitting blog interesting too.

I like what Sal did, picking the clothes from her own closet that *could* work here. It would be great to see a spread of the clothes you are pulling in here as well!

Also, sequins during the day is brilliant. I had a sequinned sweatshirt in my early YLF years that I wore so much it literally did wear out. I found it a super useful item. It was navy cotton with navy sequins. I'd love to have another like it.

Thanks all! I'm so tickled by the responses here!

Angie thanks for the close read of the inspiration photos! To answer your questions:

YES I have stripes, in spades!

I have flat brown tassel loafers with brogue detailing. They'll work here. Also a pair of metallic bronze "fish scale" oxfords (Louise et Cie -- Sharan owns them) that I just purchased. My black patent tassel loafers are on the way out -- they rub too much at the heels.

I have a cream Aran cardi, and a new-to-me- cream mock neck Icelandic-style yoke sweater (Suz owns it). Both can be adapted for Aran jumper-inspo outfits.

I DO have clogs -- tan and navy. Both mary jane style. I have to admit I'm craving the casual ease of a backless slip-on pair, but these will do in the meantime. (Also, my house shoes are basically slip on clogs! So there you go.)

Yes, I'm definitely crafty enough to do some boro/sashiko mending. I've been experimenting with mending sweater elbows too. FUN!!

Agree-- adding that long dark skirt + sweater outfit to my deep winter inspiration board. Items and even whole outfits can cross over. That's the beauty of it!

Ack, gotta run to a meeting! Will reply more later!

I've been eagerly awaiting the spring transition post. An excellent analysis here, as always.

The first words that came to mind when I reviewed the photos were: texture, pattern, layers, soft colors, and neutrals.

Like yourself I struggled with dressing for a cold spring in the past. When I lived in NJ spring weight clothing never worked (I was always too cold) and I'm not generally a fan of most spring colors, especially pastels. I always keep an eye out for lighter colored sweaters in fall and winter collections so I can use those sweaters during cold springs because light weight spring sweaters never worked for me. I would also swap my darker wash denim for lighter washes to brighten up my outfits for spring.

Now I live in an area with a warmer spring and need to layer more often because temperatures can vary quite a bit throughout the day (easily rising by 30-40 degrees from morning to lunchtime!). So I wear heavier sweaters less often and am working more on outfits with layers for spring.

For colors, my spring wardrobe this season is heavy with blues, especially baby blue (I added baby blue loafers, sweater, and half zip pullover this season). I decided to soften the blues with the addition of tans, which has worked really well. I can see both blue and tan as a lovely addition to your fisherwoman northern seas spring capsule.

Interesting! I see what you mean in your photos. They seem to be channeling a Celtic (Cornish or Highland) fisher rather than a preppy (New England) fisher. I like the heritage/arty aspects of this look. I think they will suit you very well.

Have you seen the brand Seasalt (from Cornwall)? It might be worth a look.

And I’m a yes to sequins during the day! I bought my first ever sequin skirt late last year. I will be wearing it during the day, when the weather gets cool enough. For this look, you might find an open knit top that has a smattering of sequins on it. I’ve seen some around.

This is perfect for you, Sarah! Absolutely right for the climate, fits completely with your aesthetic, allows you to use and reuse pieces you have (and perhaps repurpose some) and also -- at least potentially -- helps you deal with the "too sweet' vibe of lighter colours by providing juxtaposition in the form of texture, chunky sweater and shoes, and so on. (I have that same problem with pastels, as you know. They *suit* me but feel all wrong on their own and are much better in small doses or as accessories, vs. the main items.)

I can see you in every one of these sample outfits and hairstyles. Love that you can pull your Fair Isle sweaters into play (and socks, too, no doubt.) I think stripes will up the nautical effect. I LOVE the patched jeans in #33. Gorgeous.

I can see this very well on you - it looks like a natural transition. I think you have the knits and the white cotton and linen.

Chunky footwear is definitely part of the look - sandals (fishermen of course), boots, loafers, clogs - or I think sneakers and socks could work as well. It's not delicate ballet flats or dainty kitten heels...

Wider leg thicker linen pants are also key.

I had a fun little game of picking a few of my pieces that "could" work in this genre and came up with more than I thought. The chocolate linen wide legs would be suitable and a few of my tops and practical jackets would cross over. The print blouse is probably a push but I could see it with the linen pants and chunk sandals (in fact I may wear that this weekend)

Ouu.. this sounds fun, love your inspo pics and the scandi-fisherwomen aesthetic. Seems a perfect transition for spring from your winter urban snow queen. Love the cable knit sweaters, pattern vests and the casual carefree vibe of it all. Should be a blast bringing it all together. I wish I could pull off this look, but somehow I always need to feel a little more tailored.

OOOH! Looking at these pics, I can SEEEEEEE your aspirational style, SarahD8! Good job :)

Northern Seas inspiration is a lot more realistic for Spring Seattleites than the Southern Seas Corfu route ;)

Specifically, I'd love to see these vibes come through:

#3 and #6 - do you have stripes?

#8 - do you have loafers?

#9 - do you have a cream aran jumper?

#10 - you have clogs, right?

#24 - YES!!

#17 - the cute bandana look is easy to achieve.

#33 - are you crafty? You can make these!

#38 - my fave!

#42 - good Winter look for you too.

I need to see your toppers all together, in one spot, in order to answer your conundrum questions! I've seen your puffer and new cream quilted jacket. The rest, I can't recall....

Several people have asked how my very wintry-themed Urban Snow Queen persona was going to transition to spring, and I’ve alluded to having a new idea up my sleeve, so here it is.

For Seattle’s “cold spring” season I am hopping on this year’s Fishermancore trend. I am not angling for the preppy/New England version of this aesthetic, and the warm-weather/holiday in Corfu version isn’t practical for my climate. Instead I will be channeling a persona I’m calling Fisherwoman of Northern Seas.

Here are some inspiration photos (1-5: miscellaneous inspo) and style elements I’m interested in playing with over the next couple of months:

Slouchy jeans

Chino pants, maybe also canvas pants–workwear with a twist?

(6-7) Nautical stripes (of course)

(8-9) Cable/textured knits (also of course)

Barn/chore jacket or plaid shacket

(10) Slip-on clogs (“off-duty fisherwoman”)

Henley tops

Lantern pants? Like a Japanese pearl diver?

(11) Wide-leg cropped pants in a substantial fabric, like corduroy

Overalls

(12-14)Fair isle, Nordic/patterned knits (also, pattern-mix with Breton stripes)

(15-16)Small-scale plaid/gingham

Color scheme: base of navy, black, white, light gray, and teal, especially a particular bluish shade of teal that I am calling (17) Gansey blue

(18-20)Also utilitarian items/styles in “springy” brights/pastels (that light green wool sweater with the killer whale print, I am dyyyinggggg)

(21-22)Vest/waistcoat/short-sleeve or sleeveless sweater? (I always struggle with finding the right temperature for this, but the look appeals)

(23-24)Braids/messy updo

(25-26)Scarf worn like a bandanna

(27)Hair scarf/kerchief

(28-29)Layered outerwear

(30-32)Occasional “pop” of modern gear

Bum-bag worn crossbody??

(33-34)Boro & visible mending

(35)Fingerless gloves

(36)Also…a creel-shaped bag?

(37-38)Loose dress with utilitarian layers/accessories

(39-42)Floaty skirt + chunky sweater (column of color or at least column of value – dark or light)

(43-44)Abalone, baroque pearls, blister pearls

Also sea-themed jewelry: fish, seabirds, whales

And finally…hear me out here…daytime sequins for a fish-scale effect???

Some of these elements carry over from my Urban Snow Queen persona and the eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that there are even some inspiration photos that I’m reusing. That’s deliberate! The idea is not to have a completely different wardrobe or style for each season but just to use many of the same items in different combinations or put them in a different context to switch things up a bit.

The idea is also not to adopt a different “-core” trend next spring or whenever Fishermancore becomes passe or whatever. Rather, a lot of my longstanding enthusiasms and preferences fit with this aesthetic, so I thought it would be fun to leverage the trend to gather inspiration, hone my ideas, etc. Cast my net while the fish are running, as it were.

I have struggled with dressing for cold spring in the past. One thing I’m excited about is that the color scheme here fits well with what actually exists in my closet (I have a tendency to accumulate blue tops!) in a way that my past spring schemes haven’t. On the other hand I notice that my toppers tend to be either cropped, long, or with a fitted, blazer-style cut that isn’t quite right here. So that’s a bit of a conundrum.

Another spring pitfall for me has been bringing in springy colors (brights, pastels) but then finding the effect a bit too sweet, twee, or preppy. The idea of deploying these colors in items that also have a utilitarian vibe in some way (think henley tops, fingerless gloves, or my pale pink puffer vest) seems like a really key insight, and I’m excited to play around with it!

Also excited to hear your thoughts and questions. Thanks for reading!
