I love to get my jewelry from nice consignment shops. The prices are great and there's always something interesting coming in, whether it's vintage or handmade artisan or modern pieces. I have found a lot of good ones on Etsy, too, and go back to certain artists there.

The easier question for me might be where DON'T I buy jewelry! I have a large and growing collection. :-)

Silpada, arts and street fair vendors (local artisans, etc), TJMaxx, Nordstrom & N Rack, Macys, Etsy and eBay, and consignment shops are probably my biggest suppliers.

This one is right up my alley: I have become a collector of jewelery. I went from having NOTHING to having many beautiful pieces in a short time. Although I seem to wear the same pieces time and time again. I've gotten items from flea markets, street fairs, stores such as BR, LOFT, AT, Macys, Tiffany's, Fossil, Nordies, NM and etsy.

My favorite items come from street fairs, local artisans and etsy, of course.

I bought a lovely owl pendant a few years ago from a local artisan and I'm kinda bummed that F21 knocked it off. Now everyone thinks it's from there! NO!!! :p

Mostly Granville Island. You're a Seattle gal, right? Do you ever pop over the border? Lots of cool artisan stuff at Granville Island in Vancouver for $100 and under.

We also have a shop called Blue Ruby (it's a chain; do you have it in the US?) that sells artsy costume jewellery. I got a 5-wrap bracelet made of gray pearls and leather from there, and I've barely taken it off all summer.

I see you live in Seattle too! I actually sell a high fashion jewelry line called Premier Designs. I would be happy to send you a catalog if you would like, they have a lot of great stuff, average price is about $35. If not, no worries : ) I usually wear my line, but also pick up occasionally from Forever 21 and H&M.

I mostly buy local from a little gallery or another small specialty shop. I also buy a lot of Native made jewelry I pick up when I do the powwow thing or head to the Navajo reservation for old pawn.

However, I have also bought many, many gifts from NOVA and other places that sell artisan jewlry from around the world. I recently found out that overstock.com stocks a lot of this stuff under "handmade" or "world" jewelry. Excellent prices and beautiful stuff.

Thank you all so much! I have a very difficult time buying jewelry because I have a degree in jewelry fabrication, no studio, a tiny budget and very distinct taste. I know what I like and I could find tons of things to buy... if I had the cash, which I don't. Thus my plea.

So thank you again for all of our wonderful suggestions!

ETA: Kari I wanted to thank you especially for the great links. I love it any time I can go to a website and learn some new things. One thing I am not is a beader, but it is a craft I very much appreciate.

Forever 21 is great for cheap statement stuff. I've actually been finding some very cute things lately at American Eagle Outfitters (which is strange and unexpected), so I would second that as well. Etsy's great, especially if you're looking for more unique or vintage pieces, but it's a lot to wade through and the prices vary.

I am all over the place. I LOVE jewelry. I have stuff from Kmart to Bloomies and Nordstrom to street fairs. I just always keep my eyes open. I even have a beautiful piece from a hospital gift shop ( in Boston ).

But two of my favorite places, and Oprah's wardrobe guy Adam Glassman has suggested, QVC.com and HSN.com on O magazone. One of them has RLM studio, which is fab. They have alot of fun stainless steel for a song and the stuff is really durable. There is also treated brass so that it doesn't tarnish and the prices are very reasonable.

RLM ( I own this and I love it ) : http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp......Plaid-Cuff

This is a bit more of an unusual idea, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Most of my beaded jewelry was made by local artists - my aunt makes jewelry, and she also has many friends and former colleagues who do so, so I've picked up a lot either as gifts or purchases from trunk shows over the years.
Farmer's markets and arts and craft fairs can be GREAT places to scope out jewelry artists and pick up some one-of-a-kind pieces.
Since you are in Seattle, I'd recommend visiting some local bead shops and asking their staff for recommendations, too. Many times, the really great bead shops employ jewelry artists who are working retail to support their hobby; and they also often have classes taught by local artists where you can learn to make your own elaborate jewelry, and you might be able to see samples of their work or even get on the mailing list for trunk shows where jewelry is displayed and available for purchase.

Tracy Stanley is an amazing teacher and jewelry artist - she used to teach at Beads & Beyond in Bellevue for years before it closed. She's now teaching at Fusion Beads in Fremont.

Tara Brisbane is a neat artist who used to be in Seattle but is now located in Portland - she has incredibly intricate wire-wrapped pieces. (You can see some samples here.)

J. Crew and Ann Taylor are doing a lot of statement necklaces with mixed metals, rhinestones and pearls--I'm loving them! And the prices are reasonable ($30-50).
I often have luck at outlet versions of department stores (e.g., Nordstrom Rack, Barney's Outlet, Off Fifth). Also, I load up on jewelry sold on the street in NYC.

Georg Jensen is my jewellery brand of choice. All that fluid Scandinavian silver just captures my heart.

Other than that I buy vintage or antique pieces from Etsy or thrift stores. I don't find much, I'm painfully picky about jewellery. Looking forward to seeing where everyone else buys theirs.

ETA: I didn't read that you wanted non-expensive pieces - scratch Jensen for that then, they are pricey Worth it though.

Funny, I hadn't thought of it - but usually when I travel. I like handmade silver items and have gotten some in New Orleans, Big Sur, Capitola, etc. . . . costume necklaces I have had luck with at Beall's Outlet with some from Guess, Lucky, 1928.

JCrew has some striking pieces and quite a variety of pearls lately.

Macy's always has a clearance table of 65-75% off random jewelry and if you are up to treasure hunting, some fun and funky pieces can be had for a song.

I also check out TJMaxx when I get there.

ATL has very current jewelry. I haven't bought any, but it looks very stylish on their displays.

My local T J Maxx has a huge jewelry counter with really nice artisan-style beaded jewelry. Debbie's Hallmark has some nice locally-made pieces.

Etsy.com has beautiful hand-made jewelry. I love the selection of gorgeous wire-wrapped bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Great prices, too.

I design/craft my own, so I'm always checking out jewelry trends!
