I stopped looking. Sweater dresses are too lumpy bumpy for me and I overheat easily. The thought of something knitted on me from neck to almost-knee that I can't peel off in over heated interiors makes me sweat. Maybe if I find a swingy light knit dress I might change my mind, but until then I'll keep the knits in separates.

I've had luck with Guess but it's a little form fitting (as most their stuff is) and Forever 21 of all brands. I found Design History to be very small in sizing but beautifully knit.

It takes a REALLY long time to find a greta sweater dress that not only looks great but holds up in terms of material.I have two from BCBG as my only sweater dresses. They are made from merino wool and they have held up fantastically, can be gentle washed in the machine and laid flat to dry.
I have pear tendencies as well, so I understand your perspective.

The two dresses are shaped like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/BCBG-CRANB.....2308wt_907

and this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/238-NEW-BC.....5761wt_907

I know the bottom one looks very unforgiving in shape, but I bought a similar style in merino wool at one size larger than my normal, and it was perfect--added enough shape in the dress itself without being clingy.

Good luck!

I literally just bought a super cute sweater dress @ Target (i'm a pear shape too). Cowl neck, bell sleeves, fitted waist, aline. Perrrfect! BUT it's a little on the short side. I plan to pair mine with some black opaque tights and flat black over the knee boots.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/i.....AA260_.jpg

the actual link is super long so i just posted the picture...i'm just under 5'6" and i'd say it's about an 1" longer on me than it is on the model. There's a black color as well.

EDIT: actually looking @ the picture again it may even be longer on me. She's kinda slouching...I'd say it's no more than 2" above my knee.

I had been looking for one of these for so long that I eventually just lost interest. They are very hard to find unless you are very openminded about the details, and I'm not. Most of them have short sleeves, which is utterly stupid, and the color choices and material were important to me too. I gave up long ago and haven't felt any lacking. Perhaps you will have better luck, since you're probably less finicky than I am.

I'm a big fan of the brand Design History's merino wool sweater dresses. I have a great one in grey that I got at Marshalls', but Nordstrom carries them too, I think.

Argh, the elusive sweater dress!! I have been on the hunt for YEARS and though I am an IT, I have the same requirements as you so I will be watching for the recommendations. J Crew had one that was perfect last year and I hesitated a smidgeon too long and they sold out in a snap!

Sweater dresses are a pain. They're either extremely flattering, or extremely unflattering, but usually the latter. I haven't had one for a looong time, and that's a shame, because they've always been the epitome of fashionably comfy to me, even if they're often only "comfy" looking. I need one that's very forgiving on lumps and bumps, and good for a pear shape. Every dress I wear absolutely has to be fitted at the waist, a-line, and knee-length. I'm strangely picky about that. Any recommendations?
Also, I'm I wrong to think cable-knits might skim over things a little more, or are they just too lumpy for most people?
