Interesting rules for the French. A friend of my husband's has a French wife, and I hardly ever see here wearing ballet flats. On the contrary, she loves high spike heels. She's been here in the States for only 3 years, and shops like an American. I think it's one of those "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" things.

Brenda: I love a good v-neck! It's definitely one of my best neckline options! Living in Chicago, however, I often find they're a little thin and cold worn on their own. Sometimes I can layer a thermal cami underneath, or a scarf on top, but mostly I choose to wear them from 45-65, which is Spring/Fall in m neck of the woods.

I'm thinking temperatures in France must be a bit more temperate than I thought if they rely on ballet flats and silk shirts, too!

LOL @ the WSJ article - you too can look like a fashionable French woman, for only a thousand euros for five garments. Never mind you won't have any money left for anything else, but you'll be very chic...

I hear you! I'm a v-neck devotee and have been finding this hard to find as well. I have recently discovered Theory v-necks and love the quality of their merino wool. I just picked up one in Ruby (though it is more an oxblood colour.) it is a bit slouchy and has a nice drape. I would recommend tracking it down as they seem to be on sale now! (I bought mine in store in Canada - Winners and The Bay.)

I came across this article today that mentioned v neck sweaters as a key element of French women's style.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/a-.....re-comment

So I looked up the referenced brand, Eric Bompard. http://www.eric-bompard.com/la.....vers-women
They have tons of colors and tons of v-necks. Too bad their cheapest is $183 for a very simple one.

Pasting in the article below as I know WSJ often is behind a paywall:
THE SEEMINGLY EFFORTLESS and slightly unkempt look that is French women’s signature could easily give the impression that they don’t follow any fashion rules. Right? Wrong. La femme francaise abides by a long list of sartorial edicts; she just doesn’t think of them as rules but as basic principles of good taste, acquired by symbiosis. This starter wardrobe, of five stylish staples, serves a purpose, asserting the rule from which all others flow: Style is more important than fashion.

THE V-NECK SWEATER // A winter weekend staple, always worn loose and on bare skin. It skims the hips, but its neckline should be low enough to gently draw attention to a décolleté. Eric Bompard, €155

THE CLASSIC JEAN // Indispensable, and often worn to the office with black heels and a tailored jacket. For this reason, they need to be immaculate: denim dark, cut straight, no holes. A.P.C., €150.
THE SILK SHIRT // The French working girl’s secret weapon: It allows her to smoothly transition from day to night by simply undoing one more button. It must be plain—and 100% silk. Sézane, €95

THE BALLERINAS // Contrary to popular belief, French women don’t live in heels. They rely heavily on ballerina flats from the uncontested king of ballet shoes, Repetto. These must be worn barefoot. Repetto; from €185
THE LEATHER JACKET // The most versatile item in the closet. The French woman wears it year-round and regards it as a clever “condiment” to subtly rectify the flavor of an otherwise too-girly or too-straightlaced outfit. This role means that the black or brown jacket can’t have too much personality on its own: Think smooth leather, clean lines, a narrow cut close to the body with near-invisible pockets. Gerard Darel, €650

Thank you all!

The Woolover sweaters ended up being sized too big so I didn't bother ordering. I'm trying a couple of sweaters on deep discount from Eddie Bauer and Talbots. The Talbots one isn't a v-neck but has nice zippers at the hem that make it interesting. We'll see.

I'll be watching the spring collections for v-necks.

I have an Everlane cashmere "modified v neck" that i love. I say modified because it's not quite as sharp as a regular v neck but definitely not rounded like a crew. It's called rose - and is not red, but more of a merlot colour. Actually, it's the Marsala "new Pantone colour for 2015" - which turned out surprisingly more flattering and wearable that I would have thought.

I thought Garnet Hill might have one but I don't see one in a v neck. I do see this Eileen Fisher merino top in red:
http://www.garnethill.com/eile.....value=main

Lands End is usually good for all the colors under the sun but I don't see any reds in their v neck sweaters right now; looks like a lot of colors and sizes have sold out, but they're usually good about restocking. I did find a ballet neck cashmere in a dark red:

BR had a whole slew of excellent V-neck knitwear in OCT and NOV, which made my top picks lists a few times. I'm afraid they are all sold out now.

Your best bet is to wait for new Spring collections to emerge in the next month. I have a hunch that V-necks will make a debut in Spring. Or try Uniqlo and H&M right now.

I'm looking for a simple merino wool v-neck sweater in a darkish color of red. Even a regular red would be fine as long as it doesn't lean towards orange. This sweater is proving hard to find.

Any suggestions?
