Donna, excellent advice! It does sound like your hubby and I are deep autumns . . . my partner is as well, although he is fairer/pinker skinned and has lighter eyes than me and I look better in black than he does, but otherwise we have very similar "go-to" colors --- I think it is amazing the whole spectrum of people that can fit into one season.

Your story about the red jeans is very instructive. In the past I've found myself reaching for my neutrals often--- when I have 2 of the same top, the black one always gets worn out. I'm experimenting right now with flannels that mix neutral and color, because I love flannel shirts and have a feeling I would wear them even if they were pink. Same with hats and shoes--- otherwise the item has to be really special! Maybe I will find a drapey blush pink tencel big shirt or a cozy tunic or scarf in a deep eggplant or dried blood red come time for deep winter.

Thanks for posting this! DH is probably a deep autumn. Warm skin tones, not a lot of contrast (Filipino), light neutrals do absolutely nothing for him.

At one point, I wanted to add more color to my wardrobe, thinking I had way too much gray and other neutrals. Then, I started to think about what I actually wear and want to wear. Those bright red jeans only get worn occasionally, and I had to admit it is not solely because they are pretty warm for my climate. I don't think I'd want to wear a red sweater any more often, or even a bright white one.

Today, I'm wearing a light cream long sleeve T that I rarely wear. I decided it works for me because it is mostly covered by a sweater jacket. I mostly prefer to wear varying shades and textures of gray or non-contrasting dark colors. White is okay for a collar and cuff, but I usually prefer to wear blue instead.

I am starting to think about prints, as they can make an outfit more coherent. I don't always want to wear a printed scarf. A print shirt can mostly obscured by a sweater or jacket; that works for me.

Embrace who you are. :)

This corduroys are lovely -- I also looked at two similarly-colored pair from the Gap but the problem is the same, I have a short rise! I love those colors though and am getting my fix with the olive hoodie and jacket and cognac/deep toffee accessories.

I think another part of my issue is that I'm olive skinned and very fair, but tan pretty deep and I am still tan this time of year, but will look totally different by January.

Some really interesting thoughts, Elly. As a Warm Autumn I second Vix's analysis of mid-tone + dark/light - warm/heated, fairly intense autumn peridot, pumpkin, dark red, etc. contrast nicely with the darkness of my hair and the fairness of my skin. I know you can go darker/deeper still in colours than I, but do you like either of these? (May be too true autumn for you in Military Olive or Vivid Vicuna, but for me they're a great mossy olive and a warm, cognac/ mid-brown blend.)
http://www.loft.com/corduroy-t.....8&cat

Gradfashionista-- you also explained that perfectly. I've never thought about wearing light pinks as neutrals because my whole life I've disliked them because of their femininity. That said, I've noticed that the blush color that has re-emerged in the last few seasons could be an incredibly good neutral color as it really looks a lot like some of my own undertones and with greys or navies or browns it doesn't have the same "girlish" vibe.

Adelfa-- I really enjoy the look you are talking about. Actually, originally I was hoping to find some deep shades like eggplant to wear with my palette in combination-- I like that subtle depth, and also enjoy metallic accents with my hair and eyes. I just struck out on the really deep almost burnt rich colors-- I just wasn't finding what I liked in my price point or was looking the wrong places/ the shape wasn't right if the color was.

Style fan, excellent point about keeping true to yourself.

Vix-- thank you for all your time, it was incredibly instructive for me! Both you and your friend are very stylish ladies, I admired a lot of the looks.

I think I agree with you --- I don't completely dislike light neutrals on myself, but I like the ones I like more as accents in the winter -- the way you explained it with skin makes perfect sense.

I love my colored shoes-- I find it so much easier to find the really deep rich shades that I love in leather than clothing and it looks totally fun or completely subtle depending on the clothing pairing.

You make an excellent point about pattern and accesories. I think I can do pattern in accesories despite struggling with it in most clothing. A scarf worth of pattern that incorporates all or one of my neutrals seems do-able. I think part of the reason I struggle with pattern is that I feel like most patterns have a feminine connotation that I have a hard time with. I love patterns like the feather print your friend is wearing, and large scale photo-type prints, and things like plaids and stripes. That said, I also am way more likely to wear pattern in the summer when I'm wearing fewer layers and have fewer things going on. Making the patterns lower contrast themselves might help with that.

What you said here really struck me as something to keep coming back to and using when shopping and creating outfits, no matter the season:

" But I do think we do well in mixed-color outfits or prints/patterns that:

include our hair, lip color, and/or skin tone colors

play in our mid-tone ranges so we get contrast with our hair AND our skintone

mix lighter with mid-tone *or* darker with mid-tone"

I would love to find some prints mixing the coppery tones in my hair with browns, greys, etc. I also think that it is partially why I like the darks so much-- they contrast the highlights in my hair and skin while mimicking the natural darkness.

I also love the colors in your friend's palette, particularly the deep purple, blue, and red.

Posting again as a friend of mine has coloring more like yours -- I unofficially class her as a Deep Winter -- and I thought seeing some of her color mixes might be useful.

Again, I know you don't like bolder prints/patterns on yourself. However, I thought it might help to see lowER-contrast p/p in action.

I'm not saying all darks or all lights don't look great on those of us with innately highER natural contrast. But I do think we do well in mixed-color outfits or prints/patterns that:

include our hair, lip color, and/or skin tone colors

play in our mid-tone ranges so we get contrast with our hair AND our skintone

mix lighter with mid-tone *or* darker with mid-tone

FYI, like you (and me) she works off a limited palette (Photo 1 = main colors, photo 2 accents); these photos were taken over 2 fall/winter seasons.

>What do you do when you don't like light neutrals on yourself?

As a dark-eyed brunette who only wears cool tones, I like specific light neutrals on myself -- but when it's cold and I have less skin showing, I prefer them as accents (either solid or mixed into prints and patterns). I'm a grade A overthinker but it's never occurred to me to be self-conscious about my lack of wearing lights. ;)

Do you keep hunting for the "right" colored tops? Do you buy a few scarves and hats in good shades and wear colored shoes and call it good? Do you embrace the all dark neutral look?

Yes, yes, and yes. I don't really do colored shoes so you have me beat there!

************

You've gotten great ideas upthread, and your carefully shopping has really paid off -- everything looks really cohesive and great for your coloring!

Me, I could pretty easily wear only solid dark neutrals for 8 months of the year but find I feel better and more interesting when I mix in prints/patterns and my best color-colors for variation.

I do try to keep a leaner closet so tend to keep the p/p in accessories and tunics (preferably ones that I can twist/pin/layer to work as blouses).

Since you're pretty ambivalent about prints:

I echo suggestions to look for accessories to keep you from being too bored. I know you're an hourglass -- do belt a lot? If so that's a GREAT excuse to look for cool belts with colored buckles and/or leather. I think you can go there without it feeling too stereotypical SW/Western. Or metallic chain belts?

I'd keep an eye out for prints in your neutrals (not sure if you've done that or focused on color-color). I find all- or mostly neutral prints can be "quieter" even when the design is pretty bold!

Maybe look for a sweater/top/jacket that's not necessarily a statement per se, but incorporates more than one color.

Some of my neutral-heavy fall/winter looks from the last 2 years below.

Elly I love the colours you wear. I tend to stick to earth tones. I never wear pastels, white, gray or any colour that is trendy unless it sings to me. I look in my closet and all I see is brown, olive green, camel, cognac and denim. I also have some black for my bottom half. I refuse to spend my hard earned money on clothes that do not make me happy. I also live hours away from brick and mortar stores. We are enroute to Montreal for 2 weeks ( Yeah) and I am hopefully going to buy some things.

I find that a colour like brown can be boring on one person and exciting on another It depends on their colouring. A warm chocolate brown looks great on me but on someone else is deadly.

I like the exact same colors that you do, especially in winter. Sometimes for variety I mix 3-4 dark colors, as Angie talked about doing a while ago. Say, black, gray, eggplant, and chocolate. I like to create a long line so I don't like adding a bright or a light to my darks. I add light with makeup, some highlights in my hair, gold or silver jewelry... and the texture of shoes can do a lot too.

i didn't see the responses above, but I share your concerns. For ex., I look washed out in creams, tans, camels, etc., and white requires accessories and make-up to avoid the anemic look. I've found that light neutrals can still be flattering, but so, so much depends on the colour, and also on your conception of a neutral. Charcoal works really well with light pinks/blush, and I find pale pink to be more flattering than white, but still able to stand in for white.

I'm smiling!

I hear you, Una. I think that is my big struggle-- I love the dark neutrals, but find them hard to wear with OTHER things I like. That and I struggle with finding the right colors in the right pieces while still maintaining a small wardrobe (space, budget). Limited shopping makes it worse trying to find the right colors. Plus, I'm sorta tall but don't like extremely bold patterns which makes the scale thing difficult. We just have to stick with it. Hopefully everyone can share their successes and creativity.

Crutcher-- you are fun and such a sweetheart! Thanks for the spirit lift, I'm feeling better about things. I will hunt for a scarf or two and I've ordered a couple of dark colored pieces (I still have need for a couple more tops for laundry reasons) and a couple of additional toppers so I don't get so sick of my black leather but otherwise I'm just going to enjoy my clothing. I'd love to come shopping with you . . . I bet you have some great style (I'd love to see you) and shops nearby!

Elly, First off, you stop listening to whomever is in your head telling you to wear a certain color...If you don't like the light colors, leave them in the store...Then you focus on the wonderful selection of goodies that you have posted above...I went through with a big drool coming down as I looked at each one...If you are happy with dark neutrals and they make your heart sing, then my dear, you have arrived...Three cheers for that...
(You wouldn't suddenly decide to order strawberry if you have been a chocolate mint girl all of your life, now would you...)
Also, any time you want to take me with you shopping, I am ready..I love your style and selection talents...

Thanks, Elle!

I wish I had a picture of what it looks like outside here today -- driving through the fields on the way to work was gorgeous and very much my colors to some extent --- Everything is black grey, deep brown, dark teals, deep reds, bright reds, oranges, tan, camel, Forrest green, navy blues, icy grey, mid tone blue skies, turquoise when the sun comes out. We have had our first bit of snow but the blush pink roses are still blooming here--- I guess that is a great way to conceptualize the coloring -- autumn turning to winter.

I don't have much time to say much or read all comments but I am a deep autumn too. I look best in dark colours but if I want more interest in an outfit I look best when the lighter colours are away from my face, like jeans, shoes, bag, belt. I do look good with high contrast because my hair & eyes are naturally dark brown & my skin is fair. I can't wear light colours to many of my jobs so I do it only when I can. Sometimes I wear colours that are not flattering on me but not awful, JFE,because I want the variety. Pastels are worse on me than high contrast. I think you could try orange, tomato red, cognac, rust. They are great on me & less high contrast than ivory with black. Try them with each other or with chocolate brown. Mustard & dark warm camel & toffee too.

You all are awesome and this thread has helped me clarify a lot of things that have been bouncing around my head.

I've realized:

Ivory -- the whites of my eyes are not white or ivory they are kinda a mix of silvery grey and blushy pink -- teeth look good with white or ivory, but it doesn't bring out my eyes

I'm somewhat high contrast (light skin, dark hair-- my personal coloring is somewhere between Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman-- on the lower contrast side of the deep autumn spectrum -- still, my natural hair and eyebrows are almost black brown ) but not extremely high contrast as my skin is on the light end of the olive range and my hair highlights in the sun so always looks lighter around my face-- plus my eyes are fairly clear brown, which can make them look lighter -- I like to bring out the contrast by wearing darks that emphasize the deep tones in my hair, brows, and eyes which also highlights the metallic qualities of my hair and eyes ----- however, wearing super high contrast in an outfit takes away from the drama because my contrast pales in comparison -- this is probably why I look best with mid tones mixed with darks rather than lights, or a dark, mid, and light outfit on a spectrum

There is no rush--- I will find the right pieces to add color where I want it and in the meantime I can look for a few scarves and buy things like jewel tone hats -- I have an orange/red sweater in mind and would love to find a citron, grey, and navy scarf.

I should think about trying silver grey, blush pink, some taupes and tans and warm mid-tone browns in addition to jewel tones and shades like turquoise and citron

Wearing color is easier in the summer, when I wear tops with lots of denim and more colored bottoms. I also oddly wear much more color in my gear, which is mostly shades of turquoise, coral, berry, and red. My favorite gear hat is an orange coral color, and my buff is coral and turquoise with grey and black.

Viva-- I think I need to look for a piece of this blush tan-pink -- the "shell pink" is an awesome descriptor, I've seen this color and been drawn to it, but was afraid, but I remember how good it looks on you. A drapey tencel-type big shirt would make a fabulous February refresher~

Gaylene-- not a problem so much as wondering if I am missing out -- plus, in general I've been struggling this season with how to wear the brighter, lighter colors I look good in during winter when I wear mostly darks

she dev-- I just need to find the right jewel pieces -- I love your moody descriptor - Una coined the term "intrepid adventurer" for me and it makes me happy -- I'm not sure the one quality I'm looking for though-- I love texture and colors that look like fire and heat and things that have been burnt -- colors that look like where I live-- in the southwest-- I generally picture the intrepid adventurer as a photojournalist -- rugged, travel freindly, a mix of outdoor gear, souviners and urban wear

Gwennie-- glad to hear you feel my pain-- that tends to be my struggle, the ivory and black and charcoal are too contrasty together, the mid range neutrals are better but hard to find-- I look good in some brights, but they look better alone or with denim, so I wear them much more in the summer, when I also have a tan which lowers my contrast levels further

Thimbleina-- you are a girl after my own heart, I need some lighter pants for summer!

Joy-- I hear you. I don't look bad in white or ivory, it just doesn't do squat for me. I do like some silvery greys, which was a huge shock to me (found out because several of my jackets have a silvery grey lining) I also think the blush might be good -- metallics are a fabulous idea, I love them, especially mottled-looking

Aubergine -- I think a lot of ladies are higher contrast than I am-- I agree that a lot of other ladies look good in higher contrast-- I like contrast with my skin, but not necessarily between parts of my outfit--- I do like Turquoise! I guess it is all about finding the right shade

Firecracker-- aww, thanks! I would like to add a few scarves to my wardrobe because they are great at work where I freeze and seem like a great way to add a little color

Deborah-- you are the queen of dark tones-- you also look fab in high contrast--- part of what makes your style so striking!

Jeanie -- thanks, it seems like blush might be a winner -- it isn't that I look terrible in ivories or tans, the dark tones just bring out the metallic qualities and darkness of my eyes and hair which being a brunette are some of my best features

I did a pinterest search on deep autumn colors and there are so many beautiful colors. It can be quite frustrating to find something that is both in one of your colors and fits but keep looking. As far as lighter colors, I bet you would look good in blush or tan with charcoal. Or I wonder if any of these soft autumn neutrals would work on you.
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/358036239098341732/

I embrace wearing dark tones:) On the occasion when I feel my dark outfits needs a little lift I will often use accessories to do that ie. necklace, scarf, earrings. I have managed to incorporate some white, red and cobalt into my wardrobe and that helps but I view the red and blues I like as dark tones too:)

I for one look awful in pastels, so I don't do them near my face. I do like to be trendy tho. Occasionally I'll get something inexpensive like a jacket from F21 and wear it just for a season with something darker under, so that's what's really near my face... Am I babbling? I'm exhausted... Still working like mad...

My mom and I got our "colors done" about 15 years ago. It changed my life! Attached is a photo of my color portfolio that I refer to when picking out clothes. Here were some takeaways:

--Colors come in A LOT of shades, hues, intensities, etc. I never thought I could wear yellow, it turned out that there are shades of yellow that work, and many shades that don't work.
--The woman who did these colors divided them into neutrals and elegants/dramatics. In the picture, the strips on the edges are more neutral, the ones in the middle are more dramatic or elegant. Depending on my mood, I feel more drawn to different kinds of colors.

So -- I hope you keep exploring the world of color! I agree with the idea of looking into browns, olive greens, etc even if you don't want anything too bright at this point. Good luck!

I think it sounds like you are excercising PPP quite well--patient, picky, and whatever the other P stands for (practical?). Anyway, I agree that you shouldn't force it--keep looking for items in the colors you like that will meet your other criteria and give you the look you want. Meantime, if you do have some scarves and jewelry that will provide you the color you crave, enjoy those until you can fill in the color holes in your wardrobe with things that deserve a place in your closet.

This sounds familiar to me! I also keep buying and wearing mostly dark clothes despite my best intentions to get some lighter colors in there for variety. And I'm also wary of wearing big expanses of light colors, even the ones I like on me, like cream, because I know I'll get them dirty. Am pretty sure I'm a dark autumn too, although I think my hair is darker than yours and I look a little higher-contrast.

I do like prints and wear them a lot, which probably makes it a little easier to break up the darkness. Printed tops that combine black with lighter neutrals are especially useful for me.

I've also got a bunch of clothing in my favorite dark color-colors, since, for me at least, a dark but colorful wardrobe feels a lot more fun and a lot easier to wear without looking drab than one that's mostly dark neutrals. For me, dark reds and purples are the easiest colors to buy online because, even if the color in real life isn't exactly the one in the picture, it'll still work for me if it's somewhere in that color range. For lots of other colors, it's harder to get a sense of whether the color will be even JFE on me online.

A few other random ideas:
-Could adding bits of gold or bronze, either with jewelry or with trim on clothing, work for you?
-Do you like turquoise on you? I could see it looking really nice on you and it's light/bright enough to add some variety, but still not a huge contrast with darker colors.

I struggled with finding "my" white. Although many shades go well with my hair, they did nothing for my complexion. Then I discovered clear silvery light grey and oyster, a light grey-white.
You may not be a fan of high contrast with your rich deep tones. Metallics like pewter or bronze may be the neutrals that enhance them.

I find myself in a similar situation in regard to what colors I'm finding work for me. Since joining YLF a year ago, I've been working to build a more cohesive wardrobe and have been paying attention to what colors work best for me. Like you, I think I'm a dark autumn. Before now, I had focused on black and gray as my neutrals with ivory as my light neutral, but I find that ivory, as well as other lighter colors, tends to wash me out, so I've switched my lighter neutrals to olive and camel, more midrange in shade. For colors, I find that some of the more muted shades in colors like teal and mustard, russet red and coral can work as long as they're fairly saturated in shade and not too light. I've found that I can go lighter in shade for bottoms more successfully than tops. For instance, lighter khaki works for me in pants and skirts, but it's too light near my face. Colors can be suprising. I find citron green a hard shade to wear, but found a top in citron green in a shade that was flattering. For prints, I'm finding if they are various shades of colors that work well for me, or have one of those colors as the primary base color, it's more likely to work. Given that dark shades work better for you, if you don't have a high degree of contrast in your coloring, perhaps dark with dark tends to work well for you for that reason as well.

To yourself be true.

If darks are what you love, there is no real need to try to force yourself to wear lights and brights. Jewel tones and dark reds and greens look really good with your blue, grey and black neutrals. You can bring in color thru accessories also.

Is there some quality you like in clothing? Things like tomboyish, feminine, or sporty? Mine is moody. Plain teal pants= meh. Throw in a light black coating to give a dirty wash= workhorse. Maybe your descriptors can help you up the happy in your colors.
