Hmmm, team err in favor if thrifting and team err against if buying something new. I really need to start listening to that inner voice that's telling me not to try to *make* something work. I make it work for a time or two and then I don't want to have to try so hard. I want my garments to work for ME, not the other way around (it's that whole clothing as master or clothing as servant thing).

Una - I am exactly like you in that I often get that feeling in the change room that it isn't quite perfect, but will bring it home and try to work it anyway. Floral skinnies ring a bell?

These are the items that turn into orphans, frustrate me in trying to figure out what to do with them and ultimately end up making me feel guilty for purchasing them and feel bad about myself personally.

I want to learn how to trust my gut reaction because it's almost always right. But having said that, there are items I didn't feel right about (BF jeans) that now I like. So I guess it comes back to experimentation and what I'm willing to try.

I am on team err in favour but would like so much like to be on the other team. Since I joined this forum a few months back I started tracking purchases and returns. Oh my, I have done so many returns. Most of these I was unsure in the store but thought they might look good in an outfit, or they were a great price, or or or. In support somewhat of myself, I am trying to work out some sort of style but it is quite difficult - and this seems to end up in many returns as well, along with a total lack of fashion/style confidence. And the final reason is that I see something on someone that looks so fantastic, I try to replicate and it doesn't usually work out for me.

When I'm shopping, I err in favor. Retail environments definitely seduce me more than an on-line shopping experience. However, a timed on-line sale, like "this weekend only, take 35% off full priced merchandise when you spend $500" gets my adrenaline going as well so I err in favor here as well.

Once I get something home, I err against and tend to return it if I have doubts. Occasionally I return something that I later regret. And occasionally I keep something that I regret keeping after wearing for one day. This is almost always because the garment's fit is inferior in some way, or it is annoying in another way. I wish I had it in me to return these false promises but I don't.

I find it is almost impossible to be sure of a garment "beyond a reasonable doubt" because you are making that decision from trying it on, not from wearing it for a day.

Err against... which is fine. And then Team hunt it on Ebay, for my second chance at something I missed out on the first time.
Suz, if you check back into this thread, consign your Fluevogs - you can try Fluemarket on their website. They resell well.

I'm with Anne --- Erring Against means fewer tragic mistakes; but sometimes leaves me with holes that haven't been filled in entirely too long while I wait to find what really makes me happy.

Example: not had a warm pullover sweater for the last... seven winters I think, and still don't, meaning I'm sitting around in a fleece sweatshirt over whatever I'm wearing at home. Boy, do I regret not snapping up the charcoal sweater I saw on sale at Mango at the end of last winter --- I was sticking to a strict budget, but I should have allocated that budget to filling more holes than making upgrades perhaps. I was, however, swayed by the season immediately ahead, which was also my dominant season. Good policy usually --- unless you have really glaring holes in your other seasons that leave you soaked or freezing (I also lacked a really warm and versatile scarf until last winter, and had just the one wearable-in-public cardigan...which was parked in the wrong city!).

And last summer, thanks to the forum's encouragement, I finally bought plain black shoes that I've been needing for, um, 15 years I think. I did have a 'filler' pair of black with pink piping and a dressier one with neon green straps, but neither worked with a lot of things; plus the pink piping was on canvas espadrilles while the neon was a pair of stilettoes, making both impractical for everyday use.

This is a second disadvantage to holding out --- that's 15 years of angst over shoes that don't *quite* do the trick with an outfit, and extra purchases that may have been cheaper and provided more variety/fun, but did result in an unmanageable number of shoes at one point.

It's interesting that personally, when I leave something behind, it's not usually because I doubt the item will look good on me or work with my wardrobe. It's because of budget, or because I fear it is too dressy/polished and I won't wear it enough (ie, won't want to ruin it, hence will put off wearing it), or it feels too self-indulgent when there are more important, *practical* things to buy.

And I still make mistakes in the stuff I *do* bring home. Which means my filter isn't working very well to start with, if I don't doubt them doubtfuls enough in the store!

Team Error Against. I usually trust my gut, so if there is any hesitation at all, I don't buy it. However, a good sale price can swing me (remember that Nanette Lapore top that I brought to the YLF weekend - and it ended up going home with Rae?) That's an example of when I let the sale price out-vote my gut. An expensive lesson!

It is a good question Una, and one I have been thinking about in regard to purging too. Almost without exception, everything I have purged (that wasn't simply worn out, or stained,or didn' t fit etc) was something I had some doubt about at the time of purchase. Often it was getting the YLF approval that tipped me into buying it.

However the number of these items is fairly small, and most of them were only purged after I had worn them for several seasons, so they still got worn. Mostly I am on the Err Against team. But before YLF I was such an Err Against person that I hardly bought anything. YLF has helped me be less perfectionistic and actually acquire some new items that are adequate if not perfect.

I used to be on Team Err in Favour (ignoring that red underline for my Canadian spelling!) until I got so disgusted at myself for buying a jacket that everyone said looked so wonderful on me that I bought it in spite of my doubts. Seeing it hang in my closet made me realize that I did have a definite personal style and that poor, unloved jacket was not part of it. It was a hard lesson but it did teach me to listen to my instincts instead of relying on others' opinions. So now I'm definitely Team Err Against. If I'm not sure, it stays in the store.

The biggest disadvantage that I can see to Team Err Against is that I could get stuck in a fashion rut, but I think that my love for Fluevogs and Ann Demeuleester-style pieces ought to take care of that.

And that jacket that sparked my epiphany? It eventually found a home in my sister's closet where it gets the love it deserves.

More and more on Team Err Against. So say all my recent boot returns, anyway.

Even my two new favorite items, the Gidigios and the military coat, I initially decided against. I left the coat behind, and I missed the first listing of the boots then only pulled the trigger after getting the lower price.

The bad side I guess is that I'll probably be an even sloooower adopter of trends, and I was slow to begin with.

I am team err against and it can cause problems of having to track things down later when you realize you should have snapped it up. Like my Muubaa blush moto, the leather look shirt I saw on my road trip, the True Religion BF jeans . . . I'm sure there are plenty more.
Not sure if this is balanced out by the lesser amount of orphans and mistakes and the tighter rein on my budget.

Team Err Against.

If I don't want to wear it immediately, I typically don't take it home or pull the trigger. And if I am scared I won't wear it soon, I make sure there's a decent return policy and I will get a chance to show all of you.

Advantages: I don't have much in my closet that I don't use, except for situations like Angie's blog post this morning -- i.e. the item that was a workhorse in a different season and is now neglected because I am sick of it.

Also, presumably I save money, although I don't think that necessarily correlates. (That is, one could spend a ton on items one was 100% sure of.)

Disadvantages: Possibly I don't try thing that could work for me? But so what? I don't really see that as a disadvantage, necessarily. Just because it *could* theoretically work, if I don't like it, why would I want it?

My one glaring Err in Favour: a pair of Fluevogs that I have only worn about 4 or 5 times. They just aren't me, and they don't work with any of my stuff, no matter what. I hate that I spent a lot of money on them (even on sale) and was influenced by the sale price to buy. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

ETA: POST Shevia!!

I've noticed as I continue to refine and purge that the items I haven't worn have been items which gave me a small niggling feeling of doubt that I ignored in the hopes of making them work. Often, I wanted them to work on me the way I'd seen them on someone else. For example, my bright green Gap blazer, which MaryK rocks, has been an orphan, and deep in my heart I knew it wasn't right for me.

So I am apparently Team Err in Favor, and that needs to change. I need to trust that little voice more now that my sense of style is clearer. Or in lawyer-soeak, I need to love items "beyond a reasonable doubt." I think my fear is that I will grow stagnant by not pushing myself, but since my style has turned out to be somewhat avant-garde, I'm not sure that's a rational fear.

Are you Team Err in Favor, or Err Against when you aren't quite sure of something you like, and why? Any advantages to either team?
