Good point, Aida! I never really thought about that, but it makes sense. I think a lot of my problem at the moment is because I'm not liking the aesthetics of my pale, pale legs and true nude shoes seem to accentuate it.

Cilleena, I think for those of us with pale skin and dark hair there is an additional element to consider: when we wear truly nude colored shoes we have to be careful about how to balance light and dark elements in our outfits. I find that if I am wearing ALL light, a truly nude or very light shoe is often fine. However if, say, the top part of my outfit has any darkness and I still want a "nude" effect for my shoe, something that's simply low contrast (and not truly nude) is more balancing; otherwise the outfit can veer to top heavy.

Thanks everyone!

That must be it, I've not found the right "nude" to flatter my skin tone. In the meantime, I'll stick with tan.

Lisa is right, it takes a long time to find the right nude that flatters your skin tone. In the mean time, low contrast is almost as good.

I am quite pale and found only the nude shoes with a patent finish worked best against my legs. The color extends my legline and the patent finish give the shoe some interest so I still look like I am wearing shoes. It took me a long time to find a pair of nude pumps that worked with my skin tone.

I don't think it makes that much of a difference, Cilleena. Wear light tan or metallic shoes!

I've been experimenting a lot with this look this summer. I am very petite and lengthening my leg line has become a very important part of my overall look.

I have really nude shoes, they are pretty and fairly comfy but I find that they kind of make for an overdone look. Also I think they are going to look weird as I get tanner this summer. I prefer the look of tan, taupe, gray, gold or silver shoes that create a low contrast look without being really nude.

Nude is the ultimate in low contrast, so if you are wearing something that you feel *really* needs leg lengthening then it would be the way to go. Nude is different for every skintone, though- to be really nude it has to be basically the same color as your skin. It shouldn't wash your legs out, just blend in with them. Being short legged, fussy footed and pale skinned, I find true nude shoes that I can wear difficult to find. I did recently find a pair of sandals and I love what they do to my legline.

The question you pose is interesting but I do think it doesn't matter all that much and that it is a matter of personal preference. Go with the shoe that flatters and that provides a low contrast to the outfit above -- be that sand, tan, olive, metallic, etc.
My nudes are a a sandy taupe (nude) colored ballet flat that I use instead of white, a silvery taupe maryjane heel (same purpose), and an olivey tan t-strap wedge sandal (which acts like nude on me).

A nude shoe is obviously a low contrast shoe. But, not all low contrast shoes are nude. Does it make any difference to the outfit? When would a nude shoe be more desirable than a low contast shoe, like a tan shoe on my pale legs? Is it just personal preference? Or maybe when the outfit is a very colorful one and just a nude shoe that blends in works best? Does a low contrast shoe lengthen the leg line as well as a nude shoe does?

I am wondering because I've found that I don't care for nude shoes on me. My legs are too white and most true nudes are a sand color and so pale that it seems to wash out my white legs further. So, I'm wondering if a tan shoe will serve the same purpose as a nude.

What are your thoughts on the "nude" shoe? Do you find them attractive? Do they need to be a little dressy or have have interesting details? I find them a little drab unless there is some interesting detail to the shoe like a high heel or cut outs or super strappy...you get the idea. Maybe I just need to adjust my eye...
