A fun epiphany! I really like the velvet mule. It looks great on your foot, too.

Mules really are tricky that way. Passed on some beautiful ones earlier this year because the upper was too high for my low volume feet. They just flew right off.

Angie, thank you!

Joy, your fleecy loafers sound really nice! I actually demoted/promoted my formerly inside-shoe clogs to brief-run-outside shoes: for getting mail, emptying the recycling bin, cutting herbs in the garden. We have cats, but they are indoor only, so no emergency coyote and raccoon chasing for me!

I have a pair of silver mule loafers ( leather) that I wore as indoor shoes until the weather demanded socks so got a pair of silver loafers with a fleece lining for indoors. DH recently bought Crocs with a fleece lining for indoor shoe but they can go out to scare off a coyote or raccoon if the dog needs to go out (an emergency) and cleaned easily for more indoor use. Your notice of these details is so interesting.

Thanks for appreciating, all! Yes, I agree that these shoes are meant to be worn with bare feet (or little mule socks!). For my purposes I need them to be sock compatible...I wonder if I lucked into finding the only pair that is??? Anyway, the metallic mules are on their way back to boden, hopefully to find a gal with high arches and long toes, who needs a no-socks shoe. And I am enjoying the velvet ones!

Lisa p, would love to see your mules in a Christmas dinner outfit! I’ve noticed some companies are now making a fur lined loafer mule...the winter version I guess!

But the fit isn't exactly the same as the leather pair looks a bit wider. Also you are wearing with socks and these sort of shoes are definitely no-socks, summer shoes for me. But the velvet pair look and sound excellent for you!

Who would have guessed about the difference?

I am not fond of the slap-slap of bare feet in mules, and I don't care for bare feet in shoes, period. I like the mule socks below which also come in black. The little dots provide some grip but aren't big enough to be bothersome on the bottom of one's feet.

I have to pay attention when it comes to mules, because they aggravate my sciatica unless they are just so. I need a more full coverage vamp so I don't have to grip with my toes and aggravate my sciatica, and I need a wide width because of my crooked toes that rub blisters on each other.

The little things often mean the most

Great idea for an indoor shoe - but mules like this are really meant to be worn barefoot, or with a fishnet ankle sock or knee hi- no? I can see how wearing them with socks would make them hard to keep on. I'll likely bring mine out for Christmas dinner ...great idea!

I like them both, glad one fit well. It is also a lesson on why some items work great for some people but not at all for others.

Thanks, Sara! It occurs to me that this style is based on smoking slippers, originally indoor wear...so I've just brought things full circle!

I have been auditioning some loafer mules as inside shoes this week. I think it was Suz who suggested in a previous thread of mine that I try a metallic mule as at-home footwear. I work from home, so my at-home footwear actually gets the most wear of any shoe in my closet! The wooden-sole clogs I had been wearing as winter house shoes are worn out, noisy, and just not very polished. They were purchased in 2002 and have done their duty so I was game to try something new.

The funny thing is, I’ve had a poison eye for flat loafer mules, because every time I see them in an outfit they look too much like slippers to me! But, the idea of wearing them *as slippers* actually turned out to be appealing.

In the picture below, on my left foot is a velvet mule from Ann Taylor. On my right foot is a leather style from Boden. They are really similar, right? The shape, style of the vamp, etc. look almost identical to me. Well, the velvet mules are great — super comfortable, perfect for my needs. The leather ones fall right off my foot at the first step!

I think this is because:

The lining of the metallic mules is VERY smooth and slippery. The lining of the velvet mules is ever so slightly grippier. (The metallic mules do stay on my feet decently well when worn barefoot, because my skin provides the grippiness. I suspect that’s how this style is meant to be worn — but for my purposes, I need mules that will stay on when I’m wearing socks.)

The vamp of the metallic mules is slightly taller — that is, built for a thicker foot. There’s a bigger gap between the top of my foot and the shoe than there is in the velvet mules.

The toe box of the metallic mules is a bit narrower, so my foot is pushed backwards and out of the shoe. (The metallic mules are actually slightly longer than the velvet mules overall — but they *feel* smaller.) Meanwhile the wider toe box of the velvet mules invites my toes in. Note: I don’t have wide feet — actually they are quite narrow.

I think it’s just fascinating how these tiny differences in shape make a huge difference in how the shoes function for me, so I thought I would share.

Oddly enough, I ordered the velvet mules on a lark. The metallic mules were much closer to what I thought I was looking for. If I had only ordered those, I probably would have dismissed this whole style as unworkable/impractical because they fall off my feet! I also learned that in this footwear style, I prefer some kind of detail to break up the expanse of the vamp (like the embroidery on the velvet mules). So this episode is also major evidence in favor of giving a wild card a bash!
